Everyone loves adding guns to Minecraft, and today I'll show you a full raycasting system which you can use to make your own unique weapons, tools, or any other cool creations. You can customize this to your liking, and add additional commands to build off of the basic raycasting framework. Some ways to add onto this is by adding custom damage systems, vienminer, custom bullet impact sounds, dynamic range, and usage by custom mobs.

I gotta get back into datapacks. Your code is very clean and efficient. It shows you know how to use a lot of different areas of the language and how Minecraft calls the functions. This really helps because although I understand how the raycasting system works, I'd never considered a lot of the smaller things that aid its efficiency. For example, grouping the blocks/entities you want to target/exclude by tag rather than listing them all out.

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately I don’t think tutorial videos have as much potential to blow up, simply because they have quite a narrow audience. I am planning on gradually changing the content to include a better balance of entertainment and tutorial elements so that I can both show people how to make cool stuff, and also make them interested in making this stuff in the first place.(and maybe get more views 🤔)

The fact that this is now posible in bedrock is amazing, were no longer tied to entity type guns. witch DEFENTLY have there flaws.

have you ever heard of the worldspawn method. you can summon a projectile at the coords 0 0 0 but offset to the players viewing direction by using ^ ^ ^. then you can use the coords of the projectile as a motion vector. before that you just have to bring it back in front of the player. with this method you dont need a collision detection as the projectile uses the detection of the game itself if it is for example a arrow. this is extreme helpful as the projectile can have any speed you want (very fast projectiles can move 20 or 30 blocks per second if you want to) and you dont need files for every speed. also the game can handle more projectiles being shot at once. also the projectile is affected by gravity and the power of it is dependent of the speed ( determined by the distance to the player when you spawn it and the factor when you save its coordinates). additional you can launch any type of entity if you want to. for example falling sand tnt as grenades etc. to make this all work you also have to forceload the 0 0 0 chunk

This method is instantaneous, so you will need a different method for that. Cloudwolf has a video on that.

Please help! I can't get it to start, I installed the datapack from the description but idk how to enable it to work with a right click detect item. I've done /function for every file in the pack but nothing enables the right click to start the raycast like in the video.

do resource packs let you change the way your player holds a model? For example carrots on a stick, if you use custom model data to give them a gun model, would there be a way to make it so other players see you hold it like a bow?

Two questions that may have been explained in the video but I didn't quite understand: 1) How do you change the speed of the "bullet"? 2) How would you allow for the collision function to be triggered if the "bullet" is at least a certain block distance away from the entity's hitbox? That is to say you could allow for an entity to be hit even if the bullet was say at least 1 block to the right or left of the entity so you don't have to be super accurate?

1. Since it uses recursion, this method is instantaneous, like hitscan in manyshooter video games. The game doesn’t just stop a function partway through, and like I explained in the end animation thingy, the entire raycast completes before the termination of the single call to the start_raycast function. Cloudwolf has a video on a slower version, or you can use an entity version which I showed in my mandalorian pistol video. 2. Just make the projectile larger

This is a really great tutorial, but I still wondering how you dealt damage once the raycast hit something, can someone help?

Depends, there are different ways to do it for different results. Cloudwolf has a custom damage tutorial already, or you can use custom arrows with motion, or effect commands, or slimes like in my lethal minecart video. They all have pros and cons. For this video’s examples I just used a kill command.

I watched your video, which is a great resource for what I am making. However, I do not see how you call the 'shoot' function. Where is the input detection for running raycast? Like, left clicking with a specific (custom included) item to call raycast.

Why dont you use a tp command in loop function which runs a function when it hits an entity (d = 0..0.001)

A tp command requires an entity to act as the raycast which creates more lag, and this is cleaner

Hey man, appreciate your videos, helped me a lot. Quick question, how do I offset the particles or the command to start at a different location, and ending where the player is looking? So for example, the particles start at my shoulder and end where I am looking. Thanks 😎

Change where you execute the start raycast function from in terms of position and rotation. The issue is that “where the player is looking” is a bit ambiguous in this example so you have to define it yourself, which I guess Im assuming is the intersection of the player’s viewpoint and any solid blocks or entity

Where would you put the summon tnt command to make a tnt when the ray hits the block? I tried putting it in the raycast.mcfunction but it summons TNT on the whole path (like the particles) but only a TNT at the hit point is wanted (When it hits and entity, I know the problem is when it hits a block) .

in the line where you redo the function if theres no entities or blocks, add a "rotated ~ ~-1" or something like that and you will get gravity.

Usually not a good idea with data packs since each block needs an entity to display the model, and that leads to lag in large amounts.

Ok, I know that, but I wondering how to do this. I want to make ender biome with grass, but I don't want to use a regular block of grass because you see dirt at the bottom of block. So i want to at least try it.

You’re going to lag. There are some advanced chunk scanning systems, I believe a guy named ImCoolYeah25 has a utils pack which includes a chunk scanner which you may be able to use to scan and replace blocks. Since its entities, not blocks, I doubt theres a good way to do it through actual worldgen.

It dosen't work by me in 1.18.1, it dosen't travel forward. I let the mob.pass and another .json out, for the reason that i want to detect deepslate were the player is looking at. But for now i go to another Tutorial that is intended for blocks, if that doesn't work I'll come back, maybe I'll already have an answer by then.

A lot of them arent super smooth since player nbt cant be edited with commands for whatever reason. You can tp the player to an entity with motion (change the motion nbt to give it motion) or use a creeper and resistance, theres a few diff ways to do it

@@TravelersRuneAlt wont it be just like horizontal boost and not vertical. I found a way but it is not the best. Use speed 100 for 1 sec and 1 tick later levitation 60 for 1 sec. Works okay.

I need your help, how can I uninstall the datapack from any minecarft server. So I deleted the datapack file but i can't get rid of EntityPig['Crab"], my question is where is the data about this datapack mob so i can delete all of stuff from this REMOVED datapack. Thanks for any help :D

Thats not how data packs work. The custom entity isn’t “part” of the data pack like with mods. The data pack was simply a means by which the entity’s data was manipulated to become a “custom” mob, but it is still a vanilla mob. To delete all the crabs, you would need to kill all of the entities that have the tag that the custom mobs have. You can use the tag list command to find the tag, and a simple kill command with the tag in the target selector.

i know im late but just use the raycast_pass tag and do unless block instead of if block so it would be execute if score .distance tf_rc matches ..300 positioned ^ ^ ^0.1 rotated ~ ~ unless block ~ ~ ~ #(filename):raycast_pass run summon (entity)

This example pack isn’t useful on its own, it’s more for you to adapt and use in your own packs, so this probably isn’t useful for you until you learn to make your own packs. It’s not too hard and it’s super fun and useful.

I like the video and I think it was instructive, however, while I made the datapack, I ran into a problem. How do I make it so I can start raycasting by right clicking a carrot on a stick? I couldn't find anything in the video that told me how to link all this command work to a minecraft "gun".

!!!Very Important Comment for anyone doing this in 1.20.3 or after:!!! "Grass" is now changed to "Short_Grass". Although the datapack still has it called "grass" in the "raycast_pass" block tag (and "raycast_passa"), and that needs changed from "grass" to "short_grass". (You don't need to change "tall_grass" because that didn't change.) Tutorial: go into the datapack, then "tf_raycast" (or its new name if you gave it a new one), then "tags", then "blocks", then go to both "raycast_pass" and "raycast_passa" and find the word *"**#minecraft**:grass",* then in both "raycast_pass" and "raycast_passa" change the *"**#minecraft**:grass",* to *"**#minecraft**:short_grass",*

I have a problem. The raycast data pack works perfectly but whenever I put it into a loop it spawns the raycast on the floor and not to the player's eyes.

You have to run the raycast anchored to the eyes which i believe i showed in the video

@@TimberForge I have it anchored to the eyes, its in the start_raycast. I created a new world and the loop command summons the start_raycast function at world spawn.

@@TimberForge Hello, thanks for replying. Someone upvoted my previous comment though (it wasn't me), so there is at least 1 other person who got issues with the download? I never had that issue with a Drive Google-link, there must be something in the pack (or the pack format itself?) that my antivirus program says it's a virus or malware.

@@TimberForge Alternatively, if you had a PMC (planet minecraft) account, you could also upload there, they also make a virus check, and you might get more viewers to your channel like that. Maybe it's something related to Drive Google itself that alerts my anti virus program.
