This is insaaaaane. Bless your talented amazing soul, Michelle. I'll probably need to watch your video 20 times before this sinks in. Thank you for making it, because I feel like eventually education will go this direction.
We did both in person and virtual from January (UK) and I found it absolutely exhausting! Then 3 weeks ago we all went back into the class and I’m exhausted again but at least I know which direction to look in 😂
How exciting and congrats on your first year teaching! Having a great system is awesome! I find that we all work a little diff and I love learning what other teachers do especially those of us teaching online/hybrid.
Thank you for taking time to teach both remote and in person students at the same time! As a fully remote high school student, it’s hard to sometimes understand the learning and what the homework is because some teachers aren’t very tech savvy.
I am sure you all are glad to be back! I have been "back" all year and its... a lot. I am currently teaching FULL in-person, hybrid, and online-only all at the SAME TIME (I teaching 7th and 8th grade ESL middle school) It's hard! I appreciate your honesty ❤️ Teachers are inspirational troopers 🌟
I'm teaching "concurrently" (F2F students + in-person students) but have been keeping all my open tabs on my laptop and using the monitor only to see the students joining virtually. Your way seems easier and I will definitely try it after Spring Break. I wish we had someone in my school explain how to efficiently do these things...we were given a laptop, a monitor, and an order: teach everyone, at the same, using Google Meet. That was it! A bunch of us had to sit together (masked and distanced, of course) to figure out how to extend and/or duplicate the image onto the Smartboard, where to play the sound from, when to choose "a tab" over "a window"...as a specialist teacher whose usual classroom is a 7 x 7 feet windowless "broom closet" without TV, laptops, cameras, Smartboard, etc. this has been a VERY steep learning curve, so I thank you and all the other marvelous teachers who are using RU-vid to help us ease some of the stress that come with a completely new tech set up.
Thank you Irai! I'm happy this was helpful for you! I know how difficult these times have been... especially with the technology if you do not have someone to help you! I have another video coming next week with my best tips for hybrid teaching so stay tuned! 🖤
This is absolute gold! Where I grew up has been in person since September (small school district), where I live now (large and wide school district) they just started what you are going through in terms of hybrid (hyflex or concurrent teaching). Your setup is perfection. You have only the tools that you will need and nothing else. Teachers take note! Keep it simple!
We started school on march and we’ve been teaching hybrid for 4 weeks. I’m using the same set up as you except my desktop computer has a camera and a microphone so I’m using my Ipad to check if my virtual learners are seeing the same thing as my in person learners. It’s not rocket science and it hasn’t been so easy to adapt to this new teaching mode so it’s nice to see what others are doing to get to their students. Unfortunately now we’re back in virtual teaching again so I’m gonna go back and watch your virtual teaching tips and all. Thank you for everything Michelle ! Sending you love from Chile! 💕🇨🇱
That's great Constanza! Hopefully you can return to a hybrid format soon! I have another video coming next week with my best tips for hybrid teaching so stay tuned! 🖤
I absolutely AGREE with Elizabeth Acevedo!! You are INDEED talented and amazing--and will probably need twenty-ONE times before it truly sinks in! lol. . .I am now a subscriber. YOU make sense to me. . instructions clear and simple. THANK YOU!
We will finish the year virtual in CA. I teach in an intermediate school 6th- 8th grade. Thankfully the district bought a new desktop and laptop. At home I’m using my Chromebook and my old desktop desktop that I brought from my room. It’s so much easier with two devices plus I got for Christmas a monitor. We’ll probably start up the next school year hybrid! Thank you for the video!!
Thanks for another great video! I have a similar hybrid set-up, but we are using Canvas, Zoom, and Microsoft products. We have a 360 degree camera/speaker for visuals and sound. I love your tip for the wireless mouse and presenter. I will try those next. Best wishes for a successful end of the school year! 😊
Thank you, Michelle! I will definitely watch and pick up some new tips. We can learn so much from each other as educators. I am grateful for channels like yours that encourage an exchange of ideas. Take care!
For everyone like me using Teams: you don't need the external mouse, you can just on your laptop in Teams "request control" and you will be able to control the desktop from the laptop.
I dont have the same technology, but do about the same as you. Google meet now has a "present" option before joining. This makes it so the video is automatically not an option. Love this feature.
I love using multiple devices! My fav thing is to have my Ipad on next to me on a stand that has all of my notes for the class that way I can always have my list of what I'm teaching in case I get a little lost due to technology challenges.
Watching your videos always makes me want to collaborate and share ideas with you lol! I have a very similar setup. I'm teaching virtual all year and a few weeks in I realized multiple screens worked much better than multiple devices. I rearranged my room so I could sit close to my Promethean board, extend my monitor displays, and put my Meet tab on there so I wasn't straining my eyes so much to see my students on my laptop. This helps because my laptop was constantly dropping wifi so now I don't lose my students nearly as much. I also like it because like you mentioned, I can keep tabs out of view that I don't need my students to see. I ALSO use my personal iPad to connect to the Meet and share my screen because I can pull up PDFs of their math book and screen write in Goodnotes. AND I discovered the best digital whiteboard isn't really a whiteboard but Seesaw! My students already use it to complete their assignments so when I use it to write on things I want them to see I'm also teaching them all the features of Seesaw at the same time. This is probably more useful for primary teachers though. I've used it as a replacement for Nearpod because most of my students don't have strong enough internet to be in a Google Meet and have a Nearpod open. 😩 I've seen a lot of teachers mention Wheel of Names but if anyone uses Class Dojo, you can use the random selector to do the same thing. I could write a whole blog about the reasons I love Dojo but this year I discovered you can replace the monster emoji with real pictures of your students! So for anyone not in primary who feels like their students might think "it's for babies" put their picture on there instead! I did it so I can see them every day because I've never gotten to meet many of my students in person. Thank you for these videos, Michelle! They always get me thinking about new ways I can improve my technology use!
If you're using Google Meet and only using the desktop to present, you don't need to mute and turn off video then join, just hit the "present" instead (next to the join button) and you can share your whole window and it gives an option to share audio. then when you change tabs, you don't need to reshare which tab you're sharing because it'll automatically show whatever is on your screen. I hope this helps you to streamline.
Really interesting setup. I travel between classrooms so I have two laptops. I share just the Google Meet through the projector for my in-person kids and use my laptop with a split screen to share the tabs through Google Meet. I have sound come through an external speaker because my room has a very loud heat and AC blower. We are making it work. I love all of your tips!
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts Jodi! I'm happy you enjoyed it! I have another video coming next week with my best tips for hybrid teaching so stay tuned! 🖤
Great question Michelle! I am going to share more about my cart in my next video so I didn't focus on it in this one. But, I have posted about it on Instagram so until my new video you can check it out here: instagram.com/p/CL8F-J_lWgr/
Thank you, we're working back to hybrid concurrent too. I wonder if you have any ideas on how my students at home can see the kids in the class. I have a webcam, but I'm struggling with how to get it to work. Thank you for all your videos on this,=. I teach a K/1, and its been helpful to see how you set up.
If you have an iPad you can run the Nearpod from that. That way you can walk around the room without pushing a cart. I learned that from a colleague pre-pandemic.
Lord almighty, I'll never be able to do this. I'm a supply(sub) teacher(mostly primary). New class, new students, and a few different tech set-ups in various classes. Starting next week. I'm in way over my head and am doomed to fail. I'm desperately trying to learn all this before I start. Thank you for this...although it makes me see how much I have yet to learn.
My set up is just like yours the only difference is I add an external camera to my school desktop so my students at home have a visible view of the class and That I’m in the room working with my f2f students.
That's great! Unfortunately I don't have another webcam (and am trying to limit my purchases at this time) but I do sometimes position my laptop so my students can see each other.
I'm still using one device (school laptop) with a second monitor and my IWB. My second screen is duplicated onto the IWB for my in-person learners. I drag anything I want to share onto my second screen and then share my second screen on the Zoom call so all students can see it. I keep anything that just I need to see (Zoom call, email, etc.) on my laptop screen. If I need my in-person students to see the students home, I can always drag the Zoom call to the second screen. Maybe this will help someone who only has one device but multiple monitors or an IWB. Thanks for all the great ideas about setup! :-)
Hi Michelle! Thank you so much for sharing this! I’m going back the same way in one week and this helped me! There’s so many changes this year that it’s helpful to get other teacher perspective so I can have a better idea! I’d love for you you to give tips on how you structure your day with balancing virtual vs f2f. Do you use a workshop model to work in small groups? I’d love any feedback you’ve tried!
This was a very helpful video. I teach in person and online so it is very difficult to teach the online students the same thing as my in-person students. THANK YOU SO MUCH, Michelle.
It is definitely difficult! I'm so happy you found this helpful! I have another video coming next week with my best tips for hybrid teaching so stay tuned!
Yes! I'm going to talk more about the cart in my next video and will link to several cart options in that video. I am using one from IKEA but you can also find them at Michaels and even on Amazon. Here's the one I am using: www.ikea.com/us/en/p/raskog-utility-cart-black-90333976/
Thank you so much Joyce! I'm happy it was helpful for you! I have another video coming next week with my best tips for hybrid teaching so stay tuned! 🖤
Hello, I’ve been hybrid since September and I have all of my virtual and in person students logged in to google meet with me all day with frequent breaks of course. So I’m able to simply present my screen and my in person students also see it on the screen in the classroom. I would recommend sending RU-vid links of videos in the chat because sometimes when you present tabs, it still glitches for various students depending on their internet, so if you put the video links in the chat, then they can view it with less glitches.
And on Nearpod, there is a button where you can switch from teacher view to student view, but I’m sure that you already know because you are the best! I appreciate your videos so much!
Great video! Can I just say how crazy this is for teachers! My question is when you have the student Nearpod open to your class and the virtual kids, where are you controlling the teacher side of it??
Great question Angela! I usually control the teacher side of it on my laptop since I always have that with me as I move around the classroom. However, sometimes I actually join in the same Nearpod session twice (once on my desktop and once on a laptop) so I can use the annotation feature on Nearpod with my SmartBoard.
@@PocketfulofPrimary Thanks, that’s what I figured! Haven’t tried Nearpod yet but would like to incorporate it. Will re-watch your video on it! Thanks for all the great tips! I look forward to your videos every Sunday!
Thank you so much for the useful information! I was waiting for this. I have tried to view other videos on the same subject and have not gained nearly as much great info. You are amazing!
You are so welcome Irma! I'm so happy the information was useful for you! I have another video coming next week with my best tips for hybrid teaching so stay tuned! 🖤
My schedule is just like yours, except we teachers have to switch classes instead of students switching. This means I have to set everything up three times over. What fun! We are also using Zoom, but the principle is the same.
What kind of cart are you using? Can you send a picture of your cart set-up? Thanks for making this video. Our school is going to hybrid teaching in two weeks! Perfect timing.
Yes! I have posted about it on my Instagram but I also will talk more about it in my video coming next week (which is why I didn't focus on it in this video). Stay tuned for that next video but for now you can check out the Instagram post about it here: instagram.com/p/CL8F-J_lWgr/
Thank you for the tips! My county starts concurrent teaching the Tuesday after break ends. I’m nervous about how to manage the kids in their seats hearing and/or interacting with the kids in the Meets. I have a feeling our first day back will be a lot of trial and error and trouble-shooting! 😖
Hi. Have u used Zoom? If so, which do u prefer? Google Meet or Zoom? I love to have the Nearpod reports tab open so I can jump in and see who is active in the lesson. I find having a second monitor is easier than joining on two devices but it probably makes more sense for you since you teach in person & remote students simultaneously. I teach fully remote students for the most part. This all sound like it would be a lot easier if u used Zoom. 😀. That’s y I prefer it over Google Meet. Great informative video.
@@karimahsmiley1922 Oh, thank you. I have just watched that and found very useful but I saw something on her new slides, a kind of time or something and I would like to know more about that.
@@alinajerda7852 , was it the agenda slide?? If so, I insert the shape, resized and change the color of it. Then inserted a text box to type the headings. I can email you my copy.
@@karimahsmiley1922 For example minute 03:03. Is that a kind of timer? I create slides in google slides but when I save that to Nearpod then I can't play the video unless I create a video activity.
This is also how I get the hybrid job done. My only issue with Google is that when I “present” I lose the view of many of my students. Wish they wouldn’t take up most of the screen with what is being presented.
I know what you mean Bonnie! You can hold down "control" and click the "-" (minus sign) on your keyboard in order to zoom out on your Google Meet screen. It will make everything (like the chat) smaller but it will fit more students on the screen with your presentation! Hopefully this helps!
I feel like it would be easier to use a connected screen to your chromebook to add all the tabs you would like to share. On your chromebook you can open the chat and your email.
Hi Anna! I personally don't want a screen connected to my Chromebook/laptop because then I would have to keep my Chromebook/laptop on my desk. Instead, I carry my laptop around the room with me (or rather push it on a cart) so I can assist my in-person learners and support virtual learners at the same time.
I have a question regarding using nearpod when your students are virtual. Do they use a second device or can you guys not see each other when they are on nearpod. My students only have an iPad and I need to know they are there so I haven’t found much success using it in this format.
Thank you so much for the video. I teach ESL Middle School 6-8 and move from class to class. So, I use a macbook as the control center with the tabs and then use my ipad to project onto the screen in the room. I log onto my macbook as the host in zoom and the ipad I sign on as the cohost. The projecting comes from the ipad. I then use the share screen feature on zoom for the zoomers. This way my roomers and zoomers are seeing the same thing. The problem that I have that I'm looking for an answer to is: I connect with video and audio on only the macbook but if I have a co-teacher in the room we get feedback from both of us being in the same room? Has anyone figured this out? Sorry for the long post
Is there a way when I use 2 devices that on one device I’m presenting my screen to my students and on the other device I only see my students? The reason I’m asking is because when we start presenting the screen I only see a small group of my students instead of the whole class. And I noticed that sometimes when students know I’m not watching them they might get distracted with something at home 😉. So it would be nice that even though I’m presenting, I’m still able to see my whole class on my other device. Hopefully this made sense. 🤪🤪🤪
@Sari Hammon thank you so much!! Unfortunately my district uses Webex ugh. I should have mentioned that on my comment. So sorry. I wish we could use zoom. But thank you again for your help!!😊😊😊
I know what you mean! I'm not sure if this will work on your video conferencing software but it works on Google Meet so you can try it. You can hold down "control" and click the "-" (minus sign) on your keyboard in order to zoom out on your tab. It will make everything (like the chat) smaller but it will fit more students on the screen with your presentation! Hopefully this helps!
Great question Julia! In the video, I mentioned that I carry my laptop around the room with me on a cart. I will share more about this in next week's video but you can read more about it on my Instagram post here: instagram.com/p/CL8F-J_lWgr/ This way, I always have my laptop in front of me so I can monitor my virtual learners through Google Meet!
My friend made Google slides for students where it has all the links already embedded so the teacher will tell them to click it as opposed to sending it in the chat box and sending it to the students who are in-person.
Yup! I do the same thing. I post a set of Google Slides for the lesson that have links. However, in the moment, it is usually easier for my students if I drop the link directly in the chat and/or post it on the Google Classroom "Stream". It saves time since the students don't have to open a separate set of slides and find the specific link they need.
I also use the Folder option on Google Chrome. I name them the class, then I save each of the pages for that class inside the folder. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vOV9eLo63-Y.html
Thanks for sharing. I could follow what you were explaining the whole time. But, I have to be honest, this is my first thumbs down ever for your vids. I support technology at my school and I was thinking the WHOLE time, “Mrs. Xxxxx would never be able to follow this without actually seeing a projector, screen, cart, etc.” But thanks. I love all your content.
You are going way too fast! I have been teaching concurrently for the last two months. I use zoom and Securely. It is exhausting, but not too complicated. I would love to learn more and that is why I clicked on this, but I can’t follow.
I was just doing that, and taking notes. I didn’t mean to be negative! Thank you for all of your content! You are very inspirational! I’m just overwhelmed as are many of us teachers this past year!
