Painting looks so much fun, but once you have brushes you realize how hard it is to bring out the pretty results like yours. Good teaching and practices may move us one step ahead. Long way to go but very enjoyable. Thanks for the excellent tutorial video. Tomoko
Love it❤️. Lilacs are another of my favorites😍. Looks like I’ll be painting this on a postcard to send out tomorrow. Sent 3 today. I think we all need a little extra love right about now, and I thank you for giving me some great inspiration. Also, thanks for the smashing tip...I forgot about them being woody and not drinking the water. Looking forward to your next inspirational painting❤️
One of my favorite spring flowers when I was growing up in MI...sad we cannot grow them in GA. Have learned so much just watching your video. Thank you🥰
Betty Ryan: I live in Northern Lower Michigan, and when we moved to our home 20 years ago, I planted lilacs all over our yard before I even unpacked the boxes! They are so gorgeous in June! I didn't realize that they don't grow down South. Lots of other beautiful flowers there though! 💕🌸😊
OneTrueWord1988 Thank you for writing. The south have a plant called Crepe Myrtles that looks like the lilac tree which we have around our yard. It is the scent of the lilac that I miss the most. Lucky you to have them in your yard. Enjoy them especially now that we are quarantine. Be safe! 😷🌸🌷
I watched your video when you filled your new palette. Posted 3 months ago. Looks like you added more colors to fill the empty pans. Do you prefer one brand of paint over another? I don't believe you spoke of the brands in your other video, but there looked to be several different kinds. Do you happen to have a complete list of colors since that other video? With brands? BTW love your videos
Thank you! I love your tutorials and your teaching style. It has given me so much confidence and also, freedom when I paint. Appreciate your variety of tutorials too. Do you have one on how to paint a bird's nest, eggs? Would love to know more about how to paint that, if you do. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. I look forward to getting the notice that a new tutorial is up!
About the mumbling (not meant to be insulting) I neglected to say it's like you're talking to yourself forgetting us. Lol lol You just get so involved in it. Funny ...
Love your teaching. I have now seen many RU-vid's on my TV but have no comments or I would have said thank you before. Of course this is on my phone. Also, thanks for mumbling under your breat sometimes. 😆😊
Hi Ellen I love your site so much, but I have trouble with my hearing and understanding speech. I was so unhappy, but I found captioning for your channel. That helps a lot! Now I can understand you! Thank you😍
My mom's favorite flower is the lilac. Her 70th birthday is this March. I think I'll make her feel young by giving her a painting like I did as a child ❤
Defineately do the dots ... The whole point IS to lose your mind and tap into your creative soul!! It is relaxing and repetative and brings your focus into the moment rather than the future or past. Keep dotting until your "shoulds and should nots" go away! ❤️ I am enjoying the video!!!
A friend asked me to paint lilacs for her, so thank you for this. Two questions: Do you have a tutorial on painting irises, and do you have a book on painting with watercolor? Thanx!
Love the painting, enjoy your classes. Please don't smash your woody lilac stems. I grow many varieties of lilacs in my enormous flower gardens. Smashing the stems is a common myth, but it destroys the xylem and phloem inside the stems, which is how the plant(or tree) transports its water and nutrition. Instead it helps to add floral food to cut flower water that you can either get in packets or in bulk like I do, or make it yourself. I love my cut lilacs but no matter what you do, they will not last inside for long. That's why I prefer mine surrounding my home and property live on the bushes. They are a wonderful plant and I love your rendition of them.
@@ellencrimitrent Maybe she knows something I don't, but I have about 20 different varieties of lilacs I grow on my property and I have been cutting flowers and selling them for years. I find that just a fresh cut with sharp pruning scissor does the trick. Lilacs just do not last long freshly cut, which is such a sad thing. They look so gorgeous alone or in bouquets, but you end up removing them because those along with iris die off first no matter what you do. And Tulips will keep growing in the vase, so you do not want to cut them diagonally because that will encourage them to grow longer. I cut so many lilacs at once I would never take the time to split every woody stem. If she wants to, she is welcome to. You have definitely inspired me to try and paint some of my fresh lilacs if it ever warms up here in Vermont! Thanks for great tutorials.
Thank you, Ellen. You have taught me so much. I’m having surgery next month and will not be able to walk for 6 weeks. Will work with you every day - several times a day! Again, thank you for sharing your amazing talent and allowing a novice to participate in creating these wonderful projects.
Love lilacs and can't wait for them to blossom! Thank you for this quick and easy to do tutorial Ellen! I never knew that you needed to smash the stems...good to know! Take care!
I loved this! Will sit down now and give it a try. I have been painting monthly birth Flowers and Lilacs aren‘t amongst them, but I‘m sure I can use this method for February‘s violets.
i’m inspired and very grateful to add these lilacs to a vase i’m painting later. thanks for sharing your gift! i still remember your cute Christmas elf....it’s wonderful to have a variety of styles and really helps us learn. have a great day! (maybe some day a purple oxalis? )🍀
I just found your channel and love it. Not sure why it didn't come up before now when I searched for WC tutorials. Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us.
I like using a piece of paper rather than a paper towel i.will throw away. So I am working on 2 art pieces at the same time. The "no waste" painting is usually abstract and pen/ink doodles can be added as well.
Absolutely beautiful, Ellen! I just get mesmerized watching you paint. Your voice is so restful and calming. Makes me feel I could even do this, and I'm going to give it a try today, matter of fact. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise with us. Blessings!

I love to do your tutorials. I never feel pressured to be perfect. I know whatever I paint will be enough. The cards I send are loved and appreciated. Stay true to you.
Thank you for this tutorial!! I really love watercolours for flowers however l am very shy about painting them. I always thought it was harder than you showed!! Again thank you.
Lilac's are really an old fashioned flower been around a really long time think first festival was about 1898. My grandmother had a lot of them all in this color so it is a fond memory. I remember her out tending her flower garden in the 40's. Thx now that I have Sunflower's done guess Lilac's are next.
I have done lilacs before and didn't get them quite right. Too loose, now I see how to do it loose and then to add small amounts of detail to make you think that the detail is there. Thanks!
I didn't know that about people always going to the right or left when they enter a shop, I just realized I always go left first. How peculiar that is, that we do that. Bizarre. I genuinely ALWAYS go left and I never realized what I was doing! Weird!
I'm very new at this, only been painting about a month. I love your tutorials. The subject matter and style. One question that I have that I haven't seen addressed by any of the online tutorials I've watched is, how do you determine where you place the shadows when painting?
