This video shows how I built a small live edge desk using only two of the most common power tools, a palm sander, and a drill.
To start you need a slab of live edge wood. I went with some pine given to me by my uncle. I didn't have a planar, and didn't feel like taking on the router sled, so decided to use a thick pour of epoxy. This is self levelling as it dries, so it isn't a big deal if the surface isn't totally flat after sanding. So I just used 60 grit sandpaper to tame things down a little.
Then I prepared the epoxy mixture, and poured it onto the table evenly, aiming for 1/8" of coverage. I smoothed this over the surface with some cardboard, and a brush on the edges. 30 minutes later, I used a propane torch to pop the bubbles that had appeared. I left it in a cardboard box to ensure there was no dust for 8+ hours.
The next day I sanded again with 160 grit sandpaper, and applied another coat of polyurethane. I repeated this one more time, waiting 24 hours and sanding with 1200 grit sandpaper this time.
Finally the surface was shiny and hard. Then I added some metal hairpin legs from lee valley, with a shim under one leg so it sat totally level.
Overall this took about 4 days, with no more than 4 hours of actual labour going into this. It was an easy project and it looks awesome!

Thanks so much for featuring my JCF cover! Loved the end result, might try making one of those desks myself some day.

Looks sick buddy. Do yourself a favour and upgrade that palm sander to a random orbit sander. Way faster and the sandpaper on those is much more durable. Also at 4:47 it looks like you didn't polyurethane the bottom side. If you didn't, you're going to get warping because moisture can now enter or exit the bottom side but not the top side. You'll find that in a few months, your table will wobble because the legs will change angle with the warped surface. In terms of live edge wood, I get all my stuff from Century Mill in Stouffville.

Thanks Paul, that is solid advice. I hadn't applied any treatment to the bottom, so I'll pop the legs off and do that ASAP. Thanks for the live edge wood tip too!
