Easy long wing gouge grind on the ProEdge

How I use the ProEdge to reprofile a bowl gouge to have a long wing Irish / Elsworth type grind in just a few minutes probably 15 or so including cooling time but squashed into an eight minute video.
This should logically also work on other linishing machines e.g. the Axminster Ultimate Edge, but I don't have one to test it on.

Great demo and explanation! Can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say “you can’t do that on the Pro-Edge!” You’ve just documented how “you can.” Well done mate!

Thank you Doug, The ProEdge has a set number of grinds in it's design but most things can be achieved I have an old video on drilling an extra position hole so 40/40 can be done as well.

Thank you Mark, it was done for 360 after people asked if a long grind could be done with jigs.

Excellent demo Pete, Did try this once a couple of years back and it all went horribly wrong. Now I see where I went wrong so will certainly give that another go. Thank you buddy.

Glad it was helpful 2 main points 15° horseshoe for the top profile and use the extra length of the 40° protrusion corrected to 45° or 50° on the long grind jig to avoid hitting the sides!

I seem to remember 1) Tha Handle stopped a full swiing to the left as you pointed out and I think I chose the longer pro set. Ended up like an assagai lol Now I know better

Looks like it cut really well.

It does cut well, the bowl was only shown on a couple of cuts to show inside and outside profile as I didn't want the video to run long. but I did finish the bowl completely with that grind off the 60 grit belt.

Nicely done Pete, yeah the problem the ProEdge has doing an Irish grind is one of the reasons I stayed with with a bench grinder. As you know I use an Irish grind on all of my gouges and when I tried out a Proedge it simply can't do it if the tool has a handle , it can do handless like you did in the video though. Great video mate. Shay

Every sharpening system has strengths and weaknesses, ProEdge strength is the speed and ease of replicating Fingernail and Traditional profiles on gouges and a flat bevel on Skews, stray from that and the weaknesses show. But simply drilling a hole at 40° allows me to create the 40/40 grind easily (but no jig), this video shows how to extend the wings, so there are ways around. However the same is true of any system it's weakness can be worked around.

That is very true Pete, no system is perfect. Shay

Hello, Thankyou for posting this video. Really really helpful indeed. A question if I may, I have the ProEdge and am trying to work out if I’d be able to create a 30 degree long grind on a spindle gouge to create a detail gouge? The Proset only goes to 35 degrees so when using either of the long grind holes it would only allow either a 40 or 45 degree bevel angle (due to the +5). Do you happen to know a work around how this could be done? Many Thanks, Joe.
