Sooooo cute!!! You might enjoy putting a few isopods into the terrarium also as part of your clean up crew... they are soooo fun to watch and they will eat any mold or dead plant matter. I really want some jewel orchids so you have inspired me to take my old 20 gallon fish tank and make a go of turning it into a terrarium...

Nice. I just set up a second terrarium with jewel orchids last week. I have two 16 gallon rimless aquariums with a glass sheet on top as a lid. I just open it a crack during the day and then cover it at night and it seems to work well.

Love Love Love it!!! This is just the best terrarium ever! I absolutely love the first moss! I’ve never seen that one before. It’s so pretty! So inspiring! I want to try my mini moss terrarium again. Maybe springtails will help now that I have some. I might just buy that terrarium from Amazon too...

It turned out beautiful! Nice to see an orchid terrarium working out! I've been thinking about making one ever since one of my oncidiums has started suffering from my environment hitting some pretty dry levels last winter

A quick tip: use leca balls on the bottom for a drainage layer so the terrarium will become 100% bioactive. :)

I've tried growing M. Petola in so many ways and it's always done the same...dropped leaves and died. You're making me feel I should try it again now that I live in Europe (Germany). Nice to see you're using springtails now too! Ive been using them in ALL potted plants for 10 years and they do make a difference no matter the plant

I can't grow jewel orchids nowhere else than in terarium (or glass/plastic containers) so maybe you also had to little humidity. Only ludisia discolor do great in open space. I'm from Czechia so basically a neighbor 😀

@@katerinajanackova1712 do you have a garden? If so try growing Goodyera pubescence or G.repence. look into winter hardy orchids. They're just as fun in my opinion.

I love it, but just be careful buying that exact model of house terrarium, because I have found that the hinge and welding tend to wear out and eventually the welding points can separate easily. I now prefer more of a cookie jar type of vessel because it has no seams. I agree that drainage layers are overrated, but I think putting horticultural charcoal in a layer on the bottom (such as actual charcoal from your springtail culture) is a smart move, along with some calcined clay underneath your moss mixe in with the soil. There are so many ways to layer a terrarium that the options can be overwelming.

I just purchased a Macodes Petola. It looks like something has been chewing on it. There are several little round holes and chewed edges. Could this be snails?

Now I am wondering what 'spring tails' are, I am going to look that up next! I wonder if they are those gnat-type flies I found inside a bag of orchid medium I recently bought... I ended up throwing the bag out thinking it had an infestation. Maybe I should have kept it? Anyway, your terrarium looks perfect, great inspiration!

they're tiny white bugs that crawl inside soil & jump around (i don't think they fly). they're very beneficial to plants in high-moisture environments because they eat fungus!

@@al.m765 Thanks Allison! I guess that wasn't what was in that bag then! These ones look like gnats, small black bugs that are similar to the fruit flies you get in the summer and definitely flying... Well, I will leave the bag in the garbage!

Those gnats are fungal gnats. Usually adding springtails to a terrarium or pot will help keep the fungal gnats at bay.

Hello, this is be beautiful. I started a jar type one the at ha as a cork stopper type lid. I didn't notice but there was a space around the lid and a fungus knat for in there. Now there's lots of them. I usually treat them with mosquitoe bit water but its already damp in there and i don't want my plants to rot. Any suggestions?

Maybe some beneficial bugs that eat fungus gnat larvae just for the terrarium? Youd have to look up which ones those would be though since im not familiar with the names
