Easy Peasy 416 Caterpillar Backhoe repair

I C Weld

Brief step by step of how I repaired a broken cross tube on this 416 Caterpillar Back Hoe loader arms. This repair was fun. these always seem to present their own challenges no matter how many times I do one. While the repairs to these or in swapping out the complete cross tubes, there will always be other issues that pop up that will also need attention. in this case, there were more cracks that needed attention once I removes most of the weld. Hope you like it, Please subscribe

I think a “what’s in the truck” would be a good video or two. I know you have a welder and cutting torch but it’s all the “little” stuff that is of interest to me. The angle finder in this video, what size and type of electrodes do you keep, other tools and consumables etc. Most of the stuff I see and hear on the topic focus on the welder and big ticket items. But it would seem it’s the little tools etc that have made your life easier as you have built up the rig/business.

Good analogy. He mentioned 'gluing' it back together, and I believe they use some sort of superglue for skin. Next time I need an operation, I'll definitely be making sure there is no welding equipment in the OR though!

Ive watched a number of your videos and finally figured out what it is that I like... it may sound odd but i admire your honesty in admitting that you dont do perfection, you do the best you can with what you have, time and materials under difficult field conditions. Most of all i admire your tenacity and stickability. You work in shit conditions and , cramped, windy, hot, cold under chassis dripping oil on broken and abused equipment and you take it. I like that, you are a man.

@ICWeld I am sure lots of guys tell you are very humble. I know lots of folks that fabricate and weld but your experience really comes thru in how you approach these jobs and tips like verify machine is level before you tack up the tube, cut old pipe out using bevel cut to minimize your grinding, etc. And as this guy pointed out you are doing this in less than perfect conditions. Where I am it's tough to find guys willing to take on projects at a reasonable price, maybe it's cause they have plenty of work from thier regular customers. Buts seems many times I hire someone and it's always someone else's fault when thier repair doesn't come out right. Glad your making these showing this is possible if you have correct guy doing the work.

You wield that cutting torch like a fine instrument! I answered an add on Craigslist in San Diego that said “ Do you want to learn welding? Need to work hard and listen! Great welder, handed me the cutting torch while we were doing a job at a hospital with the air handlers and said “ cut this 12 “ pipe off right here” and pointed to a spot. I had never handled a torch before and looked at him befuddled, he gave me a ten minute lesson on the right settings and let me go......looked like a crown when I was done...all over the place so I know what it takes. P.S I got better and could even bevel respectably also really liked it and now I have my own welder and torch. Love watching your video’s learn something every time. Thanks
