Love that you show the "mistakes" and struggle it takes to find the perfect shot. It's never as straight forward and simple as it may seem so it's nice to see the real creative process 👍👍

I had watched a Domestika Course and was intrigued with product photography, although their shoot was too perfect (or maybe edited). Watching this gives me confidence to try and work through the struggles that may come up. The "struggle" and the "mess" was made this video perfect 😊.

Good job! There is one brilliant solution for your issues with the reflections in the first shot, and it is using a large DIFFUSER and THAN playing with light position. I was expecting you to take one instead of giving up and get hard light. It works with all reflective surfaces :)

The endresult is really amazing even though i have to say as a retoucher that the retouching techniques look very destructive and old school. The result is what counts in the end but i think you could save yourself a lot of time with for example Frequency seperation 2.0. Its just amazing how great it is for specially product retouching. Also an alternative way of getting great results with the whole highlighting issues is if you light the shot only from one side in several positions and then put the best parts together into one. I think that could have tackled a few of the problems that you had. Just my two cents. Amazing job.
@AnthonyVoltsinis
@AnthonyVoltsinis 3 года назад
Yes definitely! Retouching is an aspect of the process that I still need to learn. I like to think that I've improved since this video was released lol (especially as it pertains to working non-destructively). Still a long way to go. I really appreciate your feedback and tips!
@attaboy8422
@attaboy8422 3 года назад
@@AnthonyVoltsinis ah yeah i just realized this has a good year on its back. I feel like its super important to have this non destructive as we all had a client before that goes like "ah i changed my mind or i d like this different". It saves so much time if you can just go back to any part and just change it with no repercusion. I ll be watching more of your product tutorials as i m eager to learn that at this time and it looks like fun :) keep it up

For your 1st shot add a scrim between your main light and the bottle will get you the beautiful gradient specular highlight. The hightlight is just reflecting back the light source. The harder the light the harder the highlight. :)

@Anthony Voltsinis Heck yeah, I've made a DIY soft box, created a somewhat big white backdrop out of thick paper as well as several other smaller colorful ones, bought some products (bags for now), learned how to actually shoot photos with a camera phone, how to edit them so they look good, learned about props thanks to you and many other generous creators, and started my own small online business. It's going slow but it exists, and that's a positive piece of reality in my terribly negative environment. Thanks for wishing me luck

Read up on the inverse square law. I think it will really help you understand your lighting better. Learn about flagging too. I would always shoot product with a tripod or stand.....never free held. Also, if you are going to comp in splashes rather than take the time to splash the product yourself, make sure you match the light as they are well off. I think the stool worked better than I expected it too! Maybe try wire or clear perspex rods next time.
@AnthonyVoltsinis
@AnthonyVoltsinis 3 года назад
Thanks a lot! How would you have approached the lighting on the first shot? Move the source further away (although tricky in my room) and bump the intensity to compensate for the falloff? The stool was definitely not ideal lol.
@AnthonyVoltsinis
@AnthonyVoltsinis 3 года назад
Some people suggested that I bring the source as close to the product as possible, which makes sense. I just found it tricky to accomplish in my environment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
@a.s4899
@a.s4899 3 года назад
@@AnthonyVoltsinis Use a smaller light that from the position/perspective of the product is the same size as your strip softbox. Or bounce the light off a large white panel above such as a piece of reflector card or the ceiling. Which you did start to do......but without knowing the power of your light and distance to the refector its hard judge on the images you briefly showed. If you shoot it on a tripod then you could light the various areas of the product (edge lighting, specular highlight, brand name etc) then comp those together. Almost impossible if you do it freehand as the angle, perspective and diatance from the product will all be different.
