I had a faulty door bell chime and decided to install google nest hello. The front chime kept vibrating and it thought it was something I did wrong with the installation. I was going f’n bananas for hours and was about to give up until I stumbled on this video. I rewired the chime as you instructed and voila problem solved! Thanks a million!

Thanks for the vid! My chime issue wasn't any of those that you listed(the chimes were very muted), but seeing what a correctly operating chime was supposed to look like lead me to replacing the rubber plunger to chime insulators, and all works well again!

I even taught my husband a thing or two after ;) Thank you again for sharing!

Thank you so much. My case: Glue came off the plastic cap on front side. The pin dropped as there was no spring tension. They painted the bell onto the wall so I didn't want to pry it loose. So I switched power to the rear and bent the stopper, making the back side ding-dong. But I will also save the plastic stopper from the front. If the back ever gets stuck, I can re-glue the front. Here's to trying to remember where I put the spring in 10 years when it finally sticks.

OMG! Thank you so much. I had someone who wanted to come out and charge me $80 to repair my doorbell for the new house I just bought. I'm a single lady, and don't mind trying to repair things myself, but the videos online were not helpful-I love This Old House, but they were no help. You are awesome! Your video was exactly what I needed to fix my doorbell, it was like you were right here with me, even down to cutting the piece with the sponge. I had to switch wires and use the chime for the back door. I cut the black piece with the sponge attached so I would get the "ding dong" effect. Thank you so much.

@TomahawkDIY
@TomahawkDIY 10 лет назад
I'm not sure why it gets stuck. I'm guessing it might just be some part of the doorbell wearing out after being used for a while. Mine was about 10 years old. My neighbors have the same one and their house was build at the same time. Theirs also broke. No idea on the brand either.
@RyanSchwiebert112358

Tomahawk DIY The terminal switch worked for me, despite my initial disbelief it would be so easy. I am also really curious why the first one stopped working. My doorbell is only 3 years old, the light had gone out in the switch, and the striker did not have any perceptible 'stick' to it. The weird thing was that you could manually jiggle the striker, the light would come back on in the switch, and you could get a weak ring out of it, but it wouldn't fire a second time without manual disturbance. The rear bell rings strongly. I can't see if the light's back on in the switch in daylight, but having the bell is enough.

@NightriderXP1

It worked switching to the back door ringer. However, when I removed the little white plastic block, it was attached to a black plastic piece mounted to the back. With the black piece there, the plunger couldn't hit the top bar. So I removed the black plastic piece and it broke the door bell completely. I'm bummed. I'm guessing that the spring couldn't move the plunger high enough to hit the top bar and now without the white and black plastic at the top, it was too far away from the bottom to hit the bottom bar. The plunger is sitting really high with the white and black pieces removed...

Thank you so much for making the video! Question: Can you wire two buttons to the same plunger? I have a wire going to the "rear" and a wire going to the "front", but the "front" plunger does not move anymore. Can I just move both wires to the "rear" screw?
@dan4091
@dan4091 4 года назад
Yes you can. All pressing the door bell button does is complete that circuit, so when you press the rear button the circuit is completed and it'll ring and the front bell being open is out of the circuit entirely.
@samting1852
@samting1852 4 года назад
My front doorbell only went "ding", not the two tone. I opened it up and noticed that the plunger spring had compacted. I pulled the plunger out and stretched the spring so that the top of the plunger was about an 1/8th inch off the chime plate. Now I have the two tone again.

Now tonight it's rang three times... Can anyone tell me why? Thanks :)

Can you split the wire to make 2 separate chime connections? My chime burnt out when contractor was working on front door install (but he has no idea what could have caused it; LOL) I wanted to put double chimes side by side to replace old one (increasing DBs in same location); took the wire that was existing that was connected to burnt chime and spliced 2 new wires in (all 3 reds in one wire nut and all 3 blacks in the other). I already had 30amp transformer bc I wanted to this originally but never did. Thanx in advance for the help!

I installed a new doorbell chime and transformer for my ring pro doorbell. When I powered on the doorbell chime. I noticed a humming noise. The striker on the chime will not disengage. Could this be a transformer issue? I thought maybe changing out the transformer to a 16 voltage from what was like a 10 voltage transformer might have not been compatible with the old doorbell chime because the very same thing was happening with the chime striker like it is with the new doorbell chime.

It is a good hack but it is not a fix... if it is something that you’re just not going to get around to buying for a while it’s a good quick way to start getting notified of visitors, but in my opinion the two tone doesn’t leave you feeling unsatisfied like the single tone does. I’m OK with the back door ring sounding a little awkward because anytime someone wants to come through the back door 😳... With that being said your video is still going to be useful to many people!

no problem for now, 5 minute epoxy and small block of wood took care of it. strange can't find those style doorbells.

Thank you! Moving the wire from the front to the back did the trick. My door bell works once again!

DON'T do what I did. I attempted to cut off the striker block as described in the video. However, the entire piece which holds the little foam pad broke off and that holds one side of the bell bar. I am trying glue but I don't think that will work.

My problem is one of the rubber grommets that hold the bottom strike plate in place has deteriorated and no longer holds that plate in the correct position. That plate has sunk down too low for the striker to hit it hard enough to make it chime. Can’t find a replacement grommet anywhere!
