@@horizon146 I've taken 20 minutes teach how we used to learn the checkmate (the slower way but follows a guaranteed pattern), but I was also teaching 9 year olds.

yeh, but if you're on the black king situation, the only thing for you to survive by getting a draw is to stay in the middle, 4 squares ( middle ) just keep avoiding the rook, and it will be a 50 - rule draw, +2 elo ig

I actually prefer the "facing kings" approach. Put your rook blocking the file the king can escape from and make your king face the other. When they move directly in front of your king, deliver a check with the rook.

You can also cut the king off the rank (7th or 2nd) and move the king in front until the king is on the edge then moving the rook

It can actually be done much more safely (i.e. never accidentally blundering your rook) by actually keeping the rook far away from the king. Draw a line that the black king cannot cross. Force the kings into opposition and then give a check. Each time this happens, the black king has to move closer to the edge of the board. Continue this process and the final check will be checkmate. It's not as quick, but it's much simpler.

I legit had a draw by repetiton with a rook and king last night. The I managed to lose to while using King's Indian as Black and after a rematch, won with White using the London System.

whats also possible is putting the rook on one of the edges and slowly go up through some moves that i wont explain now but you probs know what im talking about. is one of the first things i learned as a lil child we called it treppenschach in german cause it like you go up stairs. :3

I use similar but different method. I make a dead line with rook and use my king to deliver a check forcing king to move to another rank by rank, which eventually forces king to stay at the corner. Then checkmate.

That's not how I was taught KR vs K, but I suppose this is the more efficient way. It's also slightly more complicated than the simpler version, even if the simpler version requires a bit more moves.

Ok then, now do a ‘30 sec chess lesson’ on queen vs rook from start to finish. Not starting from the Philidor short cut. All 4 pices in the inner 16 squares through to the checkmate. Looking forward to it 😇♟️

The checkmate doesn't have to be in the corner. You can checkmate against the wall of the board.

i once checkmated with a rook and a king and my opponent only lost his knights so with only 2 thing s and him always checkmating my king with his queen i moved my king and rook up to where he didnt realize it was a checkmate which made him lose
