John M size I’ve used both and they both work but 2/0 is a little bit larger. I prefer the size 2 especially if your going in October because it will increase your odds of getting a steelhead.

Great vid!!! Best yet I’ve seen and highly informative. As you’ve already said, this isn’t a typical fly setup and definitely a combo of spin setup ported over to a fly rod. That said, if you were trying to catch Kings on flies at the Salmon River there, you have some patterns you’d recommend? Also, reading this “weighted” reg (meaning 1/8oz max) feathered flies(?) are allowed there vs putting on a couple of split shots lead 48” above a swivel. Any thoughts on weighted flies? Fan from Dallas, TX!
@Handberrydea
@Handberrydea 4 года назад
Any egg pattern fly or stonefly should work. Don’t go crazy, the majority of salmon landed up there are getting flossed or are bitting out of reaction. (I don’t use weighted hooks) You may have to read the regs on that.

I believe you still need a swivel even if you are using straight floro on the real. The regs say there needs to be a break in the main line to leader so the when the weight is apllied there is no chance of it sliding. Other wise good info! What dates are you goin this year? I had to book early mid september because end of September is already sold out at the DSR.
@Handberrydea
@Handberrydea 4 года назад
Yes to be legal you need a swivel break and you’re not allowed to buy lead either. I’m not booked for anything this year yet. I’ve had a lot of luck with fishing really early in august, I’ve battlefished in October, and done well late on steel. This year I want to try something different and hit the coho run in September. I’m not going to lock in on anything. I’ll wait until the reports are good and then shoot up the following day. That’s terrible news about dsr. I’ll see if I can pick up an afternoon pass or something. Tight lines brother!

Nice explanation of this. Although, I'm just wondering with the swivel. Is that a preference thing or is it to keep those split shots from slipping? I've done the Salmon River with spinning gear. I'm interested in trying it with a 9 wt outfit. Perhaps I should get an ugly stick as a backup rod? (Orvis Clearwater 4 Large Arbor)
@Handberrydea
@Handberrydea 4 года назад
Daddy McSnacks legally your supposed to have a swivel on every rig to prevent your split shot from sliding. You can get a ticket if you don’t have one on but I’ve never got harassed for that. The wardens usually have there hands full with all of the snaggers. Ugly stick would be a good backup rod. Mine is about 20 years old and has a different feel than the new ones but you don’t need much of a feel for a king salmon. You just need to be able to feel a tick from your weight bouncing off of the bottom. You might also want to check Sierra trading post. They sometimes have nice rods to cheap. That’s where I get all of my sage fly rods from. You can usually find the older sage models for like 3 hundred bucks. The Clearwater is a nice setup. Good luck!

Well, looks like they’re not releasing this Labor Day weekend. How do you think it’ll affect Sept? Thx for the awesome vids!
@Handberrydea
@Handberrydea 4 года назад
Everything will be delayed but it all depends on your expectations. It’s fall and there will be fish in the river moving up in trickles of two or three even when it sucks. Guys that are sight fishing in shallow water are and will continue to catch them. I think everything is behind 2 weeks but that’s just my opinion. If you want a safe bet for salmon try Columbus Day weekend. The problem is that everyone else knows that and will be there. I’m not as excited for salmon anymore to be honest. I know that some may bite out of reaction, but those fish are not there to actively feed. I’ll probably go up late September or early October for a day or two but I get more excited by the big browns and steelhead that will show up late October and November. Those trout are there to feed on salmon eggs so I rather target them. Anyways, watch the water levels and the reports. I like salmon river newbie for reports. The dsr reports are accurate but they often Jazz them up a bit to bring in the money. . Pay attention to the temps during the day and at night. These are all things that influence the fish. If you want to gamble to be there for the first big push, Look at the date of when you went there last year (if you timed it right) and add a week or maybe two. Good luck brother!
