I've been thinking about doing a "How To" video on the Salmon River for years! Well I finally did it and I hope it helps people. I get salmon to bite but it is often MUCH harder to fish that way. I give overall information on Salmon Fishing and the Salmon River as well as how I target and fish for these monsters. I break down my salmon fishing setups in detail and provide lots of tips along the way!

Great advice right upfront & awesome information,have caught many salmon & always learning,my favorite way is to look for a spawing pair,then look down river,there's always a bachelor group waiting to move in & very pumped up,passing any fly by them seems to cause a quick reaction & doesn't effect the pair spawing,tight lines & bent rods 🤙

Enjoyed the video. I live about 2 hours east of the SR and I've been going there since I was able to drive, which is now around my 35th or 36th year fishing there. Like you, I was also hell-bent on catching fish legally, in the mouth as they say. And so, I must confirm your first observation, the lower you are in the river, the better your chances. I recall my first time in Douglaston over 30 years ago, the fish kept coming and coming and I'd hook a nice, fresh fish, only to have it run down the river, jumping, bull-dogging me; boy was it exhausting, but I'll never forget it as long as I live. That being said, I abandoned the salmon for a few years, becoming rather obsessed with steelhead, but the last several years, I've been back, though lately, I've taken to oversized, sunk Spey flies for catching them. Which leads me to confirm another of your observations (I'm a lawyer, you see, lol) and that shock when you see a fish fly across a pool to attack your fly - how completely exhilerating!
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 2 года назад
Love your comment!!! I'm not sure many people who go up there get to experience it like you have. My hope is that more and more people realize that salmon can bite and be downright aggressive in the right conditions. A friend and guide fishes up there all the time and he'll use plugs in the middle of the river, surrounded by people lifting and snagging... and he'll get laugh at from everyone until a salmon crushes his plug and it's deep in its mouth 😂 Then they're all crazy surprised.
@Thermopylae2007
@Thermopylae2007 10 месяцев назад
Back during my teens I recall becoming skeptical of salmon biting until I saw a few strike at a Kwikfish (lure similar to Flatfish) and later an aggressive spinner strike. While I've undoubtedly flossed fish since, I think that the more confident you are that they will strike, the more likely you'll give them greater space and fish them like a stream trout, which keeps them less spooked and more likely to aggressively bite.

Hi, I really wanted to thank you for this video. I just bought a reel and rod to try catching salmon on a fly in BC. Tomorrow will be my first time attempting this and I found your video while searching how to setup my line. An NOW you're telling me that you've applied EuroNymphing technique to Slamon... You made my day since that's exactly the technique I've used for a while on my small setup #3. You've earned a subscriber and I guess I'll have to watch more of your stuff to see how you're doing things. I have one #8 10ft single handed and a spey #9 14ft. I don't know yet how tiered I'd get trying to "euronymph" with that 14ft but I have to see how this will work.

Thanks for this very informative video. I will be coming over from the U.K. in October to fish the Salmon River for the first time, so your video will be very helpful. I do wonder though why you don’t use a sinking leader. For example the Airflo polyleader which comes in either 5’ or 10’ lengths and has a variety of sink rates. I use these frequently when salmon fishing in the U.K. I would be grateful for any observations you have. Many thanks. Peter
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 2 года назад
If I were swinging for salmon I might do the same... but you often do not have room on this river to do that. I rarely swing for them. You can really only get away with that on the very lower portions of the river. Also... if you were to swing deep with a sinking line I fear you would snag a lot of fish. The fish can be big and plentiful in this river so when they're packed in you try to swing above them and get them to move up to your fly.

I usually fish off a boat at the mouth but this year I fished my first time in the river this year and threw a green egg on the fly rod and as I was making a recast I saw a salmon follow it from one side of a pool to my egg which really showed that they really are biting

Bryan, I’m leading five other fly fishers end of September early October to salmon fish in the northern section of the lower peninsula of Michigan. I’ve fished there four times. I’m going to follow your recommendation on the switch Redington 8 wt 11.5’ rod, I have a large arbor Lamson Reel I used all the time on big fish (it’s got a great drag). As far as your sighter material goes I have found cutting lengths of 18” of alternating sighter colors and tying blood knots. I snip off one of the blood knot tags and leave one about 1” long. The tag that is left gives me another point of observation on a take. I just received purple marabou and chenille and I will be tying up black, olive, and purple Woolley Buggers for this trip. On previous trips I have had a lot of takes on size 6 dark colored stoneflies. I know you’re into tying quick and easy flies (because you go through so many flies with these kings). Have you ever tried stoneflies on spawning salmon. Thanks for all the recommendations and suggestions. I’ll be in touch soon on my newest Brown Trout print. Take care my friend, Joe

First summer salmon fishing on the fly, it was funny. I realized the fish were pressured by lots of spin fishing so the modern streamer patterns weren’t very hot. Tied on an old Spey fly pattern and hooked up onto a steelhead of a lifetime. It broke my 3x tippet though😂. I’ve been trying to make presentations the fish have never seen before and have been seeing some success, even in the home waters. Maybe try it sometime, see if the philosophy works.

Question : You are using a 7 1/2 foot tippet from the sighter to the fly. correct? How far are you typically holding the sighter above the surface in 2 to 3 feet of water when fishing the flys more or less vertical? Also how does your leader setup differ for steelhead? Thanks
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 2 года назад
Roughly about that length in tippet. In shallower water that is 2'-3' feet deep I would go a bit less probably (maybe 6'). It also depends how far away I'm fishing as I'll have more of an angle from my rod tip to my fly. The closer your fish to the rod tip the further the sighter would be above the water. The further away I fish the closer the sighter to the water. If I'm in 3 feet of water with the fly almost directly under the rod tip, using 6' of tippet from the sighter to the fly... I'm probably keeping the sighter almost a full 3 feet from the water. If I'm casting further out then maybe a foot off the water. If I have to use split shot on the line to get the fly down then I'm creating a hinge in my line... so that part would be near the bottom and I would have my sighter a little closer to the water to compensate for the hinge. The only change I make for steelhead is using lighter line on the tippet side. Again... that all depends on conditions. Low water, clear water conditions or spooky or pressured fish I go lighter. Faster water, aggressive fish conditions I go heavier. My typical tippet weight for steelies is 12-14#. I've gone as light as 8# in the middle of winter in pressured conditions. Never gone lighter than that.

First and foremost, I want to thank you for your honesty in explaining what really takes place with salmon catching on Salmon River during the fall run. Fishing the way you describe is done by very few and I commend you for passing your information along, you are a true fisherman. I don’t understand the need for the 10’ length of section 1 of your leader setup, followed by 4’ of amnesia as a sight indicator that you normally keep above the water? The regs for the upper and lower fly zones limit the leader length plus tippet to only 15’, this rig can not be used in those areas.
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 года назад
Thank you! I appreciate your comment! It's the rewarding way for me to fish. As for the leader... I don't fish salmon in the fly zones.. I focus on the lower river where the fish are fresh and more willing to take a fly. The reason for the long main section and sighter material is that they are much lighter than fly line. When you fish the way I do (basically euro nymphing) if the line that hangs out the tip of the rod is regular fly line you will experience "sag". Basically the weight of the fly line will want to hang straight down and pull the flies back toward you. It will not allow you to get a further reach while still maintaining a tight line to your flies which is essential for detecting strikes. Even when doing actual euro nymphing for trout I use a fly line specific to euro nymphing that is very thin to prevent that sag from happening. But I can't use that for salmon... I need something that can handle a 25 pound fish ripping line off my feel and trying to slow it down 😝

Hey brother! Hope all is well! Curious with your Redington Dually....do you change your leader set up when you wanna swing? Or leave it the same as when you're tight lining? Not sure if it would be easier to take a few pieces of the leader off and the sighter section off if you wanted to modify spey cast and swing buggers and/or streamers? Just wondering.
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 года назад
Yeah...If I want to swing I'll remove my leader for tight lining and add a long section of fluorocarbon line. I won't want the high visibility section and definitely not the swivel/tippet ring section with the tag end if I'm swinging. I keep it simple for the swing and just use a straight piece of fluoro.

Questions: You are using the RIO In Touch Switch Line. RIO shows two fly lines 1) In Touch Switch Line, 2) In Touch Switch Chucker. The packaging is identical except the words Line and Chucker. You mentioned in your video you use the RIO Switch Line because of the thinner taper (I think). Please confirm which fly line you prefer. For Steelhead are you using your sexi stone fly for you point fly? And what colors do steelhead like? Thank you and keep up the GREAT educational videos. Joe
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 2 года назад
Yes... i use the regular switch line... not the Chucker. I used to use a similar line to the chucker previously and once you get past the short taper you can't get it out any further. The regular switch line has the longer taper which allows you to spey cast and really get it out there if you want. When I steelhead fish I am only allowed 1 fly. My main flies for steelies are (1) - Egg Patterns like the glo bug or other egg type flies, (2) wooly bugger or stone flies. I like black, brown or olive but sometime use purple.

I was introduced to salmon fishing from non traditional fly fishing guys. The first couple of years the C&T method was the only thing I used but my third year I went all fly fishing with heavy weighted floating line with a heavy tippet ~ 20 lbs and caught kings on large black or brown stone flies. I’ll be headed back to Michigan in 2023 where I will be trying your Euro Nymphing setup for Kings. I belong to Northern Kentucky Fly Fishers (NKFF) club. We are also looking for trout/salmon trips. The reel I have on it is a 7/8wt. It is not a spey rod though as it can be used one or two handed and is a few feet shorter than a spey rod. They're nice rods in that they can be used for almost any situation (euro nymphing, indicator nymphing or swinging).

How do you attach section 1 to your fly line? (tried to listen for that) I know plenty of folks skip section 1 to keep the fly line outside the guides. Think they counteract the sag with more weight, but obviously there's big downsides to that. Most of the time I'm fishing it's for domestic trout and I euro nymph with an obnoxiously light and long system (25ft + tippet). Never really have to worry about that line/leader junction with trout but salmon/steelhead is another story.

You can actually do the same with this (really long leader and keep the fly line on the reel)... just be aware that when you hook up that fish is gonna tear ass and your junction is going to go flying out your rod guides... which is why I don't do it. I just use a loop knot in my main line to connect to a braided loop I added to my fly line. I have tried tying directly to fly line but I find the line cuts into the flyline too much and makes me really nervous. The braided loops have been good to me outside of one occasion many years ago but that was my fault for not replacing it.

I don't use a sink tip. For my method I am trying to keep my line straight up and down with only the tippet section in the water. All of the weight should be in the fly itself. We are also not fishing deep water. I think even the people that swing for them don't use a sink tip in most situations as the water is not really that deep.. but I don't really swing for them so I don't really know for sure.

When in doubt.. make the main line longer than you think you'll need it. You can always cut back the mainline portion easily... but make it to short and it gets more complicated to add to it while on the water. For the 10' rod I would go probably 9' of mainline, to 3' of amnesia to 6' of tippet. For the longer rod add probably 2' of main line to the formula above. Ultimately... see how it feels when you're on the water and make adjustments.

Good Question! I haven't done any spinning for salmon or steelhead. I thought at one point that I might do it and bough a "Noodle Rod". They really long, flexible through the mid section but have a good backbone. I know people use them but I honestly don't have experience with them enough to tell you much more than that. You usually get some early sporadic fish in late August but they're few and far between. By mid-September we start to get fairly good numbers. @WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 года назад
Good question! It has to do with rod length and how that extra length helps you fight the fish. If I use a 9 foot rod for salmon then I'm definitely using a 9wt. At this point that is only a backup rod incase I break the switch rod. I can drop to an 8wt when using the longer (around 11') switch rod because the length gives me more power and leverage to fight the fish. When fishing for steelhead if I'm using a 9' rod (usually for smaller streams) then I'm using a 7wt or an 8wt. If I'm using the longer switch rod the 7wt is perfect.

@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 2 года назад
I have used an 11' 7wt switch rod and caught salmon on it... but I don't recommend it highly. It is a little under gunned for these big salmon. But if that's what you have then give it a go and have fun and just be careful to not put too much pressure on the fish to protect your rod from breaking. If you play the fish well, use drag well and know the limits of the rod you should be able to do it. My personal favorite rod for salmon is an 11'6" 8wt switch rod.

@@WhiteDogTrailCompany how about a single hander?
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 2 года назад
@@marylovesmakeup1000 You might be able to get away with it. The more length you have in the rod the better. So a 10' 7wt is better than a 9' 7wt. It is still under gunned in my opinion. If I were using a shorter single hand rod then I would be using a 9 weight. Maybe an 8 weight if it is 10'. But if you don't want to invest in a new rod... then give it a go! Just know the limit of the rod and don't put so much pressure on a fish that you break the rod. Keep the rod low and to the side when fighting a fish.... if it runs like crazy (which they will) you might not be able to slow it down with a 7wt... hell a lot of times I can't slow them down with a big switch rod either lol.

Most people floss by putting heavy weight 4 feet up from the "fly" adn let the line come across the bottom of the river and across salmon's mouth.. You hook them on the outside of the mouth when the line comes across them. What we do is try to eliminate that possibility of flossing by the set up that I use. That regulation is for the Lower and Upper Fly Zones only. I don't salmon fish those locations because the fish are not too fresh up there. I have way better success lower in the river so I only fish for salmon down there. Now, Steelhead, I'll fish up there!

@cliffords9422
@cliffords9422 Год назад
I follow that you are basically using a Euro nymph technique, however you also say you often times put some weight on a portion of the tippet coming off your knot to the leader section. Now you have weight there and you are using heavily weighted flies. Doesn't that throw off the balance of the rig and increase the number of flossed fish? Also, why bother with the sighter section, especially in shallow water. If it's completely out of the water and you fish by feel, it doesn't seem to really be doing much for you. The river is very rocky in places, don't you get more snags when bottom bouncing than if you keep your flies 6-12" off the bottom. I think the fish are not actually sitting on the bottom so much as hovering above the bottom. Thank you.
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany Год назад
All good insights! Yes. I am basically euro nymphing. On the Salmon River I can only use one fly so if that fly is not heavy enough then I have to add weight. If I do add weight then I am doing it where I would normally have a second fly so it feels the same as a double nymph rig. It does increase the risk of flossing a fish but since I keep the distance from weight to fly the minimum allowable, I reduce that risk as much as possible. The sighter does help even in shallow water when it is not as close to the surface of the water. It still helps me see where my flies are much easier than without it. Yes, I am typically targeting the bottom 6-12" of the water column. That is generally the slowest water and right where the fish are hovering.

@WhiteDogTrailCompany 10 месяцев назад
"they been snagged million times it’s over." That's the key really. If you hit them fresh to the river before they have been pressured they are much more aggressive. I'm lucky that the lower portion of our main river is more ethically fished and managed so we have a few miles of river where they are really aggressive. Once they hit the gauntlet it is mostly (but not entirely) game over. I have a friend and guide who fishes the most contested area on the river by using a planar board and a plug behind it. When everyone is snagging around him, he can get to the fish they can't reach and gets them to smash plugs that just hang in the current. They can and will bite... if they are not pressured. Best of luck this year!
