EASY Skip trowel texture using a Venetian Plaster Trowel

I use an Unaggregated Wall and Ceiling Spray Texture (no sand added) for most of my wall textures including this skip trowel technique.
Mix the mud just thick enough to stay on a hawk without running off. The thicker the mud the deeper the texture. Using a 14" Drywall trowel, apply the mud to the wall in a random pattern. Then, using a Venetian Plaster Trowel, smooth/skip out the mud. Venetian Plaster Trowels have bevelled edges and rounded corners for smoothing and feathering plaster.

Like are you dabbing it on, dragging the trowel, going in circles?

Hello there WoCo ranch. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Apologies for getting back to you so late. Based on the response I received from this short, I will be making a follow-up video showing in-depth the process for my technique. In an attempt to put the process into words; I start with mixing the mud to a consistency of really thick pancake batter. You can use thicker mud, straight out of the bucket, but the texture can get pretty deep. In my mind, looser is a little better. If it's too loose, it becomes difficult to control and makes a pretty big mess. I like the mud to be thick enough to put on the hawk but not keep a "peak". When I'm actually applying the mud, it's just random. The motion of my arm might be circular but the actual pressure I'm applying is random. The goal is not to look like everything is smeared in one single direction. When loading the trowel, I just sort of a "dab" the blade into the mud so the mud loads on the center of the blade. If the mud is on the edge of the blade it gives a little harder strait line edge to the texture. The brilliant thing about doing drywall and textures is that if you're unhappy with the outcome, you can scrape it off before it dries. Even if it does dry, you can sand it off or skim coat and re-apply (little more effort with this). It's a lot more forgiving than many folks believe. I guess, another way to look at it would be, less is more. If you need more you can always add more. I've actually made some cool textures out of some really ugly first attempts. Thanks for watching. Thanks for the comment. If you get a chance please subscribe. I'm in the process of shooting a series of long format videos on drywall repair a closer look at textures. -M@ W/1T

Hi there Robbie. Thanks for watching and the comment. Yeah. The 60 second format for "shorts" makes it difficult to provide instruction. It's not too bad for generating traffic to the channel though. I have recently installed this texture into another home this year. I documented the process in greater detail with better explanation. I should be able to get the video up in the next few months. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment. -Mat W/1T

you went way to fast; it would have been nice to see it done slowly then you could have sped up.

Hi there KimberliWood. Thank you for the comment. I apologize for taking so long to respond AND for editing the footage too quickly. I didn't think people would watch me if I was just scraping the trowel along. I can certainly make a video that details the process in more detail. Do you think that would be good content? If you have any other ideas or are interested in other drywall stuff let me know. Thanks again. Stay tuned, a new texture video will be coming up soon. -Mat W/1T

Hey there Hugo, thanks for watching and the comment. I love this comment and would love to know what you believe "skip trowel" is. I've seen the use of sand in the mud mixture. I've seen the use of finishing knives. Thanks again for taking the time to post a comment. -Mat W/1T

Would this type of application cost more than a level 5 finish? I'm hoping to ask my contractor to do something that looks like this in a few areas of my home. I've already paid for level 5 finish. So wondering which is more time consuming?
@Mat-W-1TFandF
@Mat-W-1TFandF Год назад
@@amandahale3247 Hi Amanda... Thanks for watching and the comment! A level five finish is completely flat walls. It should be completely skim coated so that there's no sheetrock exposed (there's a very slight texture to the paper finish different to the mud finish). Level 5 will have no perceptible bumps/tape lines/irregularities/paper fuzz what so ever. On this tape job I finished out to a level 3 then applied the texture. This saves on sanding/skimming/sanding. Honestly, the time should be somewhat the same between the two. Skip trowel is a little less dusty as it requires almost no sanding. Skip might be slightly quicker as you don't have to take the walls out to level 5. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching and the comment. If you get a chance please subscribe and share! -Mat W/1T

Oh my goodness, this looks rather laborious. Maybe it was just the accelerated pace. In any event, this method appears to be rather involved as you seem to be hitting the same areas multiple times. Does this not amount to a 'knockdown' texture?
@Mat-W-1TFandF
@Mat-W-1TFandF 25 дней назад
Hello Aaron, thank you for the comment. Yes, this texture is quite labor intensive. I think I am able to do just about 200 sf in an hour. It really is a very nice texture though. It has a very organic feel to it. It kind of reminds me of natural stone when it's finished. Everything is random. My preferred way to install is very light and I try to make sure there are no strait lines, drags or tool marks. That's why it takes longer than a normal texture like a spray and knockdown. Knock down textures have a very uniform depth and fairly uniform pattern. Thanks for watching and commenting. -Mat W/1T

Hello Michelle. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. The "shorts" version is not a good format for a training video. I can only cover the basics. I have installed this texture in another house this summer and made a video of it. I'm just trying to find the time to edit it now. Hopefully this fall sometime. Hoping to make it about 5 mins. I go into depth with better close ups too. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. -Mat W/1T

Hola Mdfpintado. -Mat W/1T
