Thanks! Second time you saved me this month. I replaced my alternator earlier this month and today my starter using your videos.*** I was able to pull the whole starter out as one piece*** after disconnecting the brake line mount as you described. I do have a 2006 tacoma 4x4 v6. Put 224k of the 236k miles on it and these were my first replacements of both parts. Largest struggle on this project was my bottom mounting bolt was stripped on the end and I fought it all the way out. Had to temporarily replace the bolt with a bolt from the hardware store to mount the new starter. Thanks again.

Thanks! Glad I didn't read the manual! Didn't even need to take it apart or take the brake line lose. If you just move it forward enough, you can easily weasily it out of the wheel well. Also easier to get to the upper mount bolt from the top of the engine compartment. This was for a 2000 with the 2.4 liter.

Thanks for the video. Perhaps the starter size varies depending on the year but I was able to easily remove the starter from under the vehicle without removing anything else and without detaching the solenoid on my 2005 Prerunner V6. I suggest trying this before removing the wheel, splash guard and brake line bolts. It could save you some time.

Thanks for the tip about taking starter apart. My starter is not bad, but I am doing other work and the weather is nice in St. Louis now, so I figure with 250,000 miles on the truck time to change Alternator and starter since i has never been done. Plan on keeping truck another 250k :) God Willing.

Good job man one thing real quick tho ,that ground wire is actually the main power supply to the starter. The other smaller 12 v supply is for the solenoid to engage .the other wire mentioned ( short 12mm nut holding it ) to the housing of the solenoid is also 12v. Other than that 👍

An important warning: You will add a lot of time and challenge to this process when you disassemble the new starter to put it back together in the engine bay *and* you take the case off the starter and leave the starter motor itself stuck to the housing. Be careful! There is nothing mechanically joining the motor core to its case, and you will have to figure out how to reassemble a heavy motor core back into its case.
@Scorpio1060-
@Scorpio1060- 2 года назад
This happened to me also when I removed my old starter. What you need to do is push each brush back on its spring and it will lock in the back position. Once all the brushes are in the back position reassemble then click the brushes back to their normal position. When installing the new motor use some duct tape strips to tape the case together before you remove the long bolts holding the assembly together to keep the assembly intact.

It's better than the Tundra or Titan's starter that is on top and in the back of the motor and is slightly over $1000 job since it is so labor intensive . You have to take the intake manifold off to get to the starter.

Thanks for the video. If you dislocated the steering linkage would that allow for the removal of the starter in 1 piece? I've destroyed my starter from water crossings and I'm going to replace it. But before I do, I wanted to take it apart and high temp gasket seal everything before installing. I'm not sure if that would be possible if I had to install it in 2 pieces. Cheers!

The manual also states that the exhaust manifold too. I'm not too sure, there may be other vids on RU-vid that proves the manual otherwise. Regardless, you can still put RTV on the motor side and still be able to assemble the starter while inside the engine bay. Just be careful not to touch anything else during assembly.

Hey K-Flo, yesterday I got a Ultima Starter for my 2005 Toyota Tacoma and was super excited to follow your suggestion. Epic fail over here...I took the ground bolt from the solenoid and the two long bolts out. But the two pieces DID NOT want to just twist apart...or come apart at all for that matter. I pulled on it harder and the motor separated at the midpoint of itself. So now the coil is pulled out. Have I just kissed my money goodbye?? What can I do? I can’t get it back in due the brushes that are on springs against it.

So I followed this and I think the bench scenes are a little “Hollywood magic” I almost learned a lesson the hard way following this video. As if you remove the sections the wrong way the internal magnets that make it function will completely f you. So follow this video with caution. I just did the install and now I have a strange noise during startup and I basically need to take it to a shop any way. But this process functionally works if you cannot afford a shop to do it right. Good luck.
