Great video! Thanks Timmy. Working on my 05 V6 Tundra starter and I just wanted an easy way to access and remove the starter. This video provide it! I don't think I want to overhaul the solenoid it self, looks quite tedious. Since I am a Novice mechanic, I don't want to go there! So i'll opt for an easy way out and just replace the whole starter. Seems like a lot of work, to risk getting all the right pieces back into the solenoid,and re-installing the starter only to have put the o rings and washers,( etc ), in wrong way. Not going to "Nickle and Dime" this project. This Truck has been so good to me for 13 years,w/no problems. Except this and the U-joints. All in all,if you're cash strapped, this is an excellent video! Again Thanks Timmy The Toolman . And Thanks you too RU-vid for bringing this very informative video to the public.You guys are the Best! Mahalo

Glad you like the video and you're welcome. I think you should reconsider and fix your starter. The OEM Denso Starter is going to be superior to something you buy at an auto parts store. Guess what they're going to do with your starter when you give it to them to for the core charge, they're going to replace the starter contacts and resell it to make even more off you. It's really not hard to replace the contacts. Have faith in yourself. A novice mechanic can handle the solenoid work no problem. It's harder to get the starter out than it is to overhaul the solenoid.

This tutorial was an absolute lifesaver! I just finished my starter rebuild last night and I followed your detailed explanation to a T. Thank you so much for everything. The biggest help - PART NUMBERS! I have found it so unreal difficult working with dealerships and them not knowing the corrected parts. Thank you so much for including them. I did see the cheaper option you mentioned, but like you, I needed parts quickly and my local dealer could get them to me in less than a day for around $61. Still better than taking into a shop and letting them do it for me. By the way, I am a complete novice, but love to learn. Now I'm hooked!

Great video, saved me tons of time. One thing I've found that's interesting... Some history first... My solenoid contacts first gave me trouble at 112k miles. A local mechanic replaced the contacts only. Skip forward to 196k miles. Same issue, only I am the mechanic. The contacts I received for a 1.8kw starter are much bigger and longer in length then the ones shown in your video (and the ones I took out of my starter) According to the Denso website, the 1.8kw is used with auto trans and the 1.4kw is used in the manual. Also, when I took the contacts of mine, the dust shadow outline showed the larger contacts some time ago. I think my mechanic put in the wrong contacts, which still worked okay, but didn't last as long. So, if you're the original owner of the vehicle and have never replaced the contacts before, you either have a 1.4kw starter or ??? Thanks again for a great video!
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 7 лет назад
Yep, you are correct Pete. I also learned when doing my research that the automatics came with a 1.8kw starter and the manuals came with a 1.4kw starter. I have heard a manual could have the 1.8kw starter also if it was bought with the "Cold Weather" package. Thanks for watching Pete and taking the time to make a helpful comment. Happy Wrenching!

I am getting ready to pull the starter on my 99 Isuzu Rodeo 3.2. I ordered a plunger and contact kit for $10 on eBay. From all the you tube videos that I have watched those solenoid parts all look pretty much the same, except I know there are plungers that have different shaft lengths. You were very thorough and cautious to be sure that solenoid would work right when you finished. I appreciate the detail shown in your video.

I am not mechanically inclined and this video helped me fix my starter. I first replaced the contacts but still had problems. I ordered a Denso reman starter from Rockauto and replaced the starter and all is well now. Tip is to loosen the 2 starter bolts before you jack up your 4runner. I like to avoid wrenching on bolts while underneath a jacked up vehicle. Also he is right, remove the brake line bolts and take the starter out from the wheel well. To reinstall I used a hammer handle to support the starter in place while i threaded the bolts from underneath the 4runner.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 7 лет назад
If you're going to work on vehicles, and you don't have a lift, which pretty much 99% of DIY mechanics don't, you're going to be working under your vehicle while it's supported by jack stands. If your'e really worried about a jack stand failure, you can always double them up or have the hydraulic jack as a backup. Jack stands are very safe. You have a better chance of being struck by lightning than having a jack stand fail on you. Where people get into trouble is they get under a vehicle supported only by a hydraulic floor jack or worse yet, the stock hydraulic jack the vehicle come with. I have absolutely no fear of working under a vehicle supported by jack stands and yes I value my life. But hey, do what you feel comfortable with.
@ato178028
@ato178028 7 лет назад
True. For the rest of the repair I was under the my 4runner while the front wheel was on two 3 ton jack stands but to loosen the starter bolts I had the vehicle on all four wheels. I may have better access since i have the manual transmission. I still had to use swivels and extensions too. Kudos to the video, very informative from beginning to end.
@TimmyTheToolman

I'm glad you found the video helpful. What you just found out for yourself is auto mechanics can be really straight forward if you have the right information and the right tools. You're probably way more mechanically inclined then you think you are. When Sean and I decided to start making videos, we wanted them to be as comprehensive as possible so anyone watching knew exactly how to get a job done. Just finished rebuilding my starter using this video, thanks as always Timmy! One thing I did not notice in the video (or in the comments) is that the FSM says to make a small wooden block and use it to push down onto the contacts with about 200 lbs of force before tightening the nuts holding the contacts.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Год назад
That's interesting Leon. I have no clue why you would have to do that. How would you measure that force anyway? Maybe use my calibrated forearm. bicep and shoulder when pulling the press handle.
@spikerengineering3447
@spikerengineering3447 Год назад
@@TimmyTheToolman I think the idea is that pushing in on the contacts seats them against the back, so that the plunger hits them evenly for better contact? You're right, measuring the force is not easy, I just happened to have my load cell around from the LBJ bolt testing, so I put it to good use :). Or a calibrated forearm and bicep would also work :).
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Год назад
@@spikerengineering3447 OK, what you said makes sense. If the contacts were slightly tweaked, then the plunger wouldn't be contacting a flat surface and might possibly get hung up. When my starter failed, that's what happened. The plunger got stuck and the starter kept running even after I turned the ignition key off. When I tore it apart, the contacts were unevenly worn. You're the first person to mention this.
@spikerengineering3447
@spikerengineering3447 Год назад
@@TimmyTheToolman Right, exact;y, I think that's the goal. I'm sure the 200 lbs doesn't need to be exact - they just want you to push down on the contacts before torquing the nuts. Chalk this up as probably the 10th Timmy the Toolman video that aided me in fixing my 3rd Gen. I had a couple brilliant ideas, but ran into some trouble too. Not that my hands and arms are fat, but they ain't small, I had a really tough time getting the wire plug off, and did what I saw someone else suggest, and unbolted the starter first, moved it around, and got the clip off. I got lucky and could hand tighten the top starter bolt by squeezing between things and going straight in. Doing it by myself was a challenge getting the starter lined up right, but I used one of those blue pry/nail puller dealies as a wedge to push the motor in place, and then used a bungy to apply pressure while I worked on the bottom bolt. I really helped, although I still couldn't get the bottom bolt in. It kept feeling like it was cross threading, so I kept trying, but to no avail. I just couldn't get it, so luckily my neighbor, a mechanic, came over and nailed in in a couple minutes. He had a shorty ratchet, which I don't have one of those... yet. The next challenge was I couldn't get the inside brake bracket screw in straight, and probably did cross thread it. It's tight, with no rattle, but next time I replace the contacts or starter I will probably have to deal with it. The final problem was I could not get the dipstick bolt in. It's at un upward angle, and between trying not to cross thread that too, and the area being way to hard squeezing my arm in, which got all scraped up, I finally got it in cleanly. Car started, and like Timmy's, the old contacts, and the contact washer on the plunger, were definitely worn. Only bummer after doing what was a tough job for me, I was saddened to see that the starter must have already been replaced. and wasn't a Denso. The kit I bought still worked, but I did contemplate dishing out the $180.00 for a remanufactured Denso. Thanks, Tim! Hope to see you next month for the Sicmods BBQ!

I just replaced my starter for my 1997 4Runner. Getting near the end the main problem was trying to figure out to get the starter to stay in position while trying to get a bolt started. I did it like Timmy did in the video. But for me I did the top bolt first. I screwed the bolt in enough to keep the starter from falling out. I think the differences may be in how flexible and what size of each person is. The top bolt was easier for me. Removal of the electrical plug was easy. I could see where to push on the plastic piece so I used a long screwdriver and pushed in the tab to pull off the connector. Even when working inside a garage with extra lighting I still use a rechargeable work light to light up everything and I move it around as needed. Without the light I probably wouldn't have seen where the push tab was at on the electrical plug.

Also mine did the same as yours and got stuck engaged and kept running even when the key was in the OFF position. First off thank you for your service as firefighter. My daughter married to a firefighter family. Husband, is a fire captain, brother-in-law--battalion chief, father-in-law--retired fire chief. But enough of that. Great first try at overhauling a starter solenoid. May I input a couple additional tips for the less than professional viewers? First, be sure to remove the negative cable at the battery and install it back last before turning the key. I know you had yours already removed due to your constant contact issue. Second, before trying to install the starter, using a pair of jumper cables do a bench test of the starter. The test can be done using the car battery without removing the battery too. This way if there is a problem with assembly, the starter does not have to be removed from the engine again. Lastly, the reason for contacts going bad is that there is no capacitor in that circuit. Thus, every time the plunger gets close to the solenoid contacts, it acts like an arc welder electrode. The sparks occur just before completing the contact. This in turn burns the material from the plunger and contacts. Sometimes it welds the plunger to the solenoid contacts. Which seemed to be your issue.

@Mahigeer1

Thank you for accepting the comments as information and not criticism. I wonder why there is no capacitor to prevent arcing as in old point and condenser circuits in old distributers. Although even then the points had to be changed at tune ups due to arcing and pitting.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 лет назад
It didn't improve the starting but it stopped the solenoid from locking up and constantly running the starter. If your rig doesn't start every time you turn the engine over with the starter, that has to do with something else other than the starter. It could be a fuel pressure issue or maybe you just need to give your rig a little tune-up and renew the sparks plugs and wires. A cleaning of the Mass air flow sensor and throttle body wouldn't hurt either. Or, maybe it's just something to do with that autostart feature.

@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 8 лет назад
+Dan Mappala I think the main difference is between the automatic and manual transmission versions. What I found from my research is the automatics had the 1.8kw starter and the manuals had the 1.4kw starter. But, I did also understand they might have put 1.8kw on manual 4runners in the parts of the country that get regular freezing temps. The best way to go about it is to pull the starter, get the Toyota Part number and Denso Part number off the side of the starter and go to the dealership to find out which one you have. But, I would suggest doing your own independent research as well before buying parts because the people at the parts counter at my local dealership had it wrong the first time. They told me my starter was a 1.4kw at first but I found out it was a 1.8kw later.

oldz70 The o-ring goes over that copper stud. It can come off on the inside because it's attached to the stud. Do you know if the location of the starter in the Avalon is similar to any other Toyota car? Then maybe I could find a video to do the job.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 3 года назад
Hey Jim, we're not familiar with the Avalon so we wouldn't be much help to you. Not all Toyotas have the starter in the same location on the passenger side of the bell housing. You'll just have to get under the rig to look and figure it out. There is a Toyota website called Tech Info that you can buy a 2 day membership from to gain access to the factory service manual pages that can instruct you on the proper steps to replacing the starter. The only caveat is you need a windows based computer to use their website. If you go onto their subscription page, there's a link on the bottom that explains the minimum system requirements to use their website. Once you're in their site, you put in your year and model and then go to the RM section (repair manual) and you can do a search for the starter replacement section.

@@TimmyTheToolman Thanks so much for your response Tim. The starter is in a different location. It is located under the hood, left of the battery. I was able to get the car started by tapping it, but it won't last long. Of course, there are several wires and tubes blocking direct access. I haven't seen many videos for the Avalon, but there are some for the Camry. So I was wondering if the starter was in a similar location in both cars. I'll check out that Toyota website and give it a try. I think the copper contact is the culprit, just like in my 4runner.

If I accidentally broke both the breather valves as I was taking it out, is it a big deal? Will using it without the valves be a big deal?.... great vid btw. Esp the orientation on how to take it out. Fumbled with that for about an hour!
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 7 лет назад
Well, the breather valves must help relieve any pressure built up by heat. With the breather valves broken off, I imagine there would be a chance road contaminants could get in there during the winter from rain water or mud puddles splashing up under the undercarriage. I sort of doubt you could buy those little breathers separately but maybe you could go to an auto wrecker place and pull a couple off another vehicle. The breathers must be fairly standard and Denso makes starters for many different manufacturers. However, those holes are really small so if you don't do some keep water crossings, I bet not much is going to enter the solenoid if you do nothing.

Just thought I'd let you know that if you remove the left rear plastic splash guard in the wheel well after removing the tire, you can replace the starter in about 20 minutes. Removing the brake line and pushing it out of the way is the biggest hassle.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 7 лет назад
Hey Martin, what year, motor and model are you driving? With a 3.4 liter engine and 4wd, there's no way you're getting it out the way you're saying. With the 3.4 liter, the exhaust is right behind the flap. Getting the flap out of the way helps, but that simple task doesn't now allow you to pull it through there. You have to pull the starter out between the exhaust and upper control arm so you have to pull those brake lines out of the way.

Thanks for this video Tim. I'm doing this job now, and I'm on the last stage. I cannot find a video anywhere that shows how to mount the starter back in with one hand, while putting the bolts back in with the other. The starter won't sit on the mount at all without the bolts. I don't know how it's done. I need someone to hold the starter in place, while I put the bolts back in. I've looked at tons of video. They all cut away when it's time to do this.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 лет назад
You can do it no problem from under the rig. You just have to reach up with one hand to hold the starter ( I would suggest your right hand) and then get the bolt started with your left hand. If I can do it, you can do it.
@jimthompson7370
@jimthompson7370 5 лет назад
Thanks for the reply Tim. That's impressive to hold it with one hand while sliding the bolts in with the other. I got my neighbor to hold it in place while I put the bolts in. I guess I could have done it, but it sure was easier with help. Tim, I hope you can help me with this last problem. I got the starter in and all I had to do was reconnect the battery cables. I connected the positive first, and when I connected the negative cable I got a serious spark as soon as I touched the terminal. I'm not sure why this is happening. Never had this problem before. I got my starter kit from Napa solutions. They put the specs from my car into the computer and it was a match for my vehicle. The only difference is that the bolt that goes into the right-side contact was not as long. The original bolt on the starter was welded to that right contact just like yours. The original bolt on the right side contact was longer than the original bolt on the left side. But in the new starter kit, both the bolts were the same size. So since that new bolt was a little shorter, I didn't include that part at the 29:24 mark. Is that piece crucial? That is the only thing I didn't include. I'm just trying to figure out why I'm getting that spark on the negative battery terminal. I'm on the last step!
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 лет назад
You should disconnect your battery before messing with starter. That's step 1. Maybe I should have made that more clear in the video. As long as you are connecting the positive cable to the correct post and the negative cable to the correct post, you should be fine. I don't think that plastic piece is absolutely necessary.
@jimthompson7370
@jimthompson7370 5 лет назад
Oh, the battery was always disconnected. That's the first thing I did. But when I finished putting the starter back in, I went to reconnect the battery. I was getting ready to try and crank the car. But when I put the negative cable back on the terminal (after putting the positive cable on first), I got a spark. Not a small spark. So I cannot connect the cable to the negative terminal. If there is a short, I don't know why. I never had a problem with putting the battery cables on the terminals before. For whatever reason, it started after I put the starter back in.

I've had that ratchet for a long long time. The only writing I see on it is "Japan". But, it's just a small 1/4" drive ratchet. I'm sure if you do an Amazon search, you can find one with a set of metric sockets that gets good reviews for a decent price. have to tell you, Tim; the hardest part for me was that transmission dipstick pipe and it's bolt was in there...what a pain....had to be careful not to break it but was more than 20 minutes to take it out. Mine solenoid control wire only came out after I took the starter from the engine. Top bolt was kind of hard, rusted treads.The posts inside where 13mm and 15mm...oil leaking from valve cover gasket got into the contacts, what a mess.Your video helped a lot with the removal, it was not that bad,you had done all thinking for us. Thank you. I got my contacts, seal and plastic insulators from www.maniacelectricmotors.com/. Was very easy to over torque the post and crack the insulators inside (12 ft-lbs torque on mine - 1.8kw). Thank you.

Thank you, T.T.T., for taking the time to make another great detailed video! This really made the repair so much easier being able to see all the steps, especially how to orient the starter to actually remove it. I only needed to replace the one contact, it was ground down about 1mm, but the plunger and the other contact looked almost new. In case this is helpful to anyone else- I bought just the contacts from a place called 4crawler.com. (direct link is www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/Starter.shtml#OnlineOrdering). I found them mentioned a few times in other 4runner starter tutorials. He sells just the contacts, $5 a piece. and if you only need the one contact like I did, cheap city! Turns out he's in sunnyvale, I'm in san jose, so they showed up next day.

Why the Neg Cable? You are the second guy to do this. I would just take off the Pos cable. I can see from how clean your truck's underside is that you drive around on pavement all the time. Not so here in the mountains west of the Silicon Valley. Also, I have wanted to remove the transmission dipstick tube for 10 years now. My dipstick broke off back then. This will be a great chance to see if I can get that old one out. I have a new one. One more thing... rebuilt starter from AutoZone $140.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Год назад
I always learned the negative cable is the first off and and last on. Unless Auto Zone is selling rebuilt Denso alternators for that price, I'd pass. But, first try fixing the issue like we show in the video with very affordable solenoid contacts and plunger.
@jmoss99
@jmoss99 Год назад
The one I bought was a Duralast rebuild. I bought the relay there before and it works fine. It doesn't fall apart when you remove it like the Toyota either. The starter has a Limited-Lifetime Warranty. Whatever that really means. DENSO builds the Toyota sold units and they are only $209. Of course, these prices are with the return of your core return. I wouldn't buy engine or transmission parts from anyone but Toyota, but air-conditioning or starters are OK with me.

Like I've told people before, the OEM contact kits replace the contacts and all the associated hardware so it's not a direct comparison of what you get for your money. But, people generally only need the contacts and plunger, so yeah, buying from the dealership is way more expensive.

So I know this video is pretty old but I thought I could maybe get an answer, I have a 97 limited and it was driving fine in the snow and when I got home, I had a little problem with trying to get into park from drive (after I got it out of fourwheel drive). I got into park and turned it off. I tried to start it a couple minutes after and it doesn’t want to start. I got power from the battery but I can’t crank it over. When I turn the key it just does nothing. None of the lights turn off when I turn the key. I replaced the battery and I still got nothing.

It might be an issue with your Park Neutral Safety Switch. It's on the passenger side of the transmission. It connects to the shift rod that the shift linkage connects to. If the switch is bad, the computer doesn't think you're in park and you can't start your rig.

In theory a horsepower is .75 kw. Hence the 1.8 kw rating for the starter. Good video.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 лет назад
Very interesting. But, for the same size engine, they do spec a 1.4kw starter for the models with a manual trans. And, they spec the 1.8kw starter for manual trans models with the cold weather package. Glad you like the video.
@carolcarola9719
@carolcarola9719 5 лет назад
The higher kw rating could be the result of using an automatic transmission. The torque converter would cause more drag or load on the starter. On another subject, I was able to correct the dashboard / warning light on my 1983 Cressida. Thanks for the helpful comment and videos.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 5 лет назад
@@carolcarola9719 Your theory for why they spec the 1.8kw starter on the automatic transmission models is the same theory I had too. It makes sense that there's more resistance with the auto trans compared to the manual trans.
