In this Quick Watercolour Bird Tutorial I will show you an easy technique for watercolour painting.
We will cover a wider range of principles in this tutorial but I think the two main takeaways are:
NUMBER 1
Using a simple watercolour process split into 3 stages. This can be applied to the painting as a whole, as well as individual parts.
This process involves thinking in 3 stages of tonal values, and tied in with that the different paint consistencies. Firstly the light family; to include whites of the page, highlights, and lots of lovely flowing halftones (nothing too dark).
In this case we let lights dry before coming back in with the slightly creamier consistency of paint for the medium or gentle shadows. As these dry we get progressively darker (more pigment and less water) towards the deep shadows and dark accents (double cream paint consistency and thicker)
This isn't really a formula but rather a simple process that can be tweaked, tailored and then applied to different areas.
NUMBER 2
This is the use of a simple 3 primaries palette to mix subdued colours, or as I like to call them "coloured greys"
When we have a colour and then mix the opposing or complimentary colour into it. We pull that colour closer to the centre of the colour wheel and it gets more subdued, or greyed down, as we go.
If we want to create a subdued steely blue as in the case of this Peregrine Flacon, then we take the blue and want to add its complimentary, orange. We don't have orange, but we do have red and yellow which make orange. So we can simply add red and yellow in small amounts to the blue to subdue (by bringing closer into the centre of the colour wheel)
When we understand this we realise we can create a huge myriad of wonderful subdued and coloured greys simply by learning to balance all the primaries.
I hope you enjoy this Quick Watercolour Bird Tutorial.
