Great video! I keep thinking about tip number one and having the lipstick suit your face and brighten it even with no makeup on. This is always been the hardest thing for me. I'll go into a store or look online and feel totally confused about what colors would look good on me. Colors that are too dark or pigmented overwhelm my pale skin. I'd love to see a video about choosing lipstick shades. I know it sounds basic, but there's definitely some color theory there. With foundation and concealer, they always talk about whether it's a neutral shade, or warm or cool. I wish lipstick was as easy to match.

Risa, I believe I discovered your channel about 2 years ago and I haven’t missed a video since. This is likely my favorite one. I don’t always care as much about new products because they might be unavailable or different price points in Canada here. But any tips and personal opinions - I love those. You are very genuine and authentic. I remember a quote somewhere that Beauty has no rules but makeup has a theory. I tend to go with that. I will probably try every single tip you mentioned. Thank you for the realness you bring into this “instagram” world.

Re: blush placement. Make up, as with all graphic arts, creates shape using the contrast of light and dark Typically blush is darker than your base coloring and darker colors recede. Most women are trying for the effect of more prominent cheek bones, even shading underneath with contour, but that only works if your cheeks are lighter. I have seen some content creators adding "lift" by applying blush and bronzer straight up the side of their cheeks and beside their eyes. That just narrows what cheekbones they do have.

Very informative video. I always use to apply blush the way Bobbi Brown suggested. I got away from that after watching other beauty influencers applying it higher up. Now I am back to doing it on the apples of my cheeks and blending it upwards. I am loving the way it makes me look.

If I'm not mistaken, Laura Mercier's pioneering product is the Tinted Moisturizer. She also did Madonna's make up for some of her music videos in the 90s. Bobbi Brown's trademark is the no-makeup makeup look.

I feel the primer is crucial. You put all this moisture and serum on the skin, then the skin drinks it in leaving makeup in the creases. The primer is the top coat before makeup. And setting powder to hold everything.

I so agree about the blush technique. I am a mature woman, but have always had high cheek bones. No they aren't as high as I was in my twenties or thirties, but there not dropping to my chin😅I like my blush to look like I am naturally flushing and apply mid pupil out and up no higher then my eye. My first real job was working the makeup counter at Eckerd Drug Store when I was 16. We didn't do make overs, but did recommend products for skin type, color, whether you were a cool or warm. Diplomats were not a thing at the time, but for mature woman we were taught the tissue and powder blot method. It still works today if you want your lipstick to last longer and not travel. Thank you so much for your great insight into makeup history.

A Laura Mercier MUA taught me that puff technique when I bought the powder and I use it with all my powders when my makeup needs to look good all day. I still have the puff from about 8 years ago as it washes like a dream - I throw it in with my reusable cotton rounds when I do a load of towels. I still use the OG LM powder :) When I find makeup products that looks good on my nose I tend to cling to them!

Bobbi still is an apple of the cheeks girl. If you’ve seen one of her Jones Road commercials, you notice no matter the age of the model she has them apply her Miracle Balm directly to the apples of the cheeks. I’m not into the super minimal makeup yet, but the Miracle Balm is pretty. Maybe a Jones Road makeup look is in order. I don’t know what all she has, but I know there’s a foundation too. Thanks Risa! This was very informative. I’m especially going to try the press & roll powder method. 💕 Jessica

I had a Trish McEvoy palette back in the early 2000s which I loved. I'm also a fan of Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown from those earlier days. I had a makeover with a Laura Mercier makeup artist, but unfortunately I have super sensitive eyes. When she tried the tight lining technique, my eyes started to water and would not stop for quite some time. I'm just not able to wear my makeup with tightlining. I do love Bobbi's tips, and Rose Marie Smith of RMS Beauty agrees with a lot of those. I have started to wear my blush old-school again. Thanks for reminders that we can be creative and not need to follow the trends if they don't work for us. xoxo

All these women are absolutely admirable and are stars, but Laura Mercier as a brand just has such a special place in my heart. What she managed to create is such a high-quality, wonderful (yet somehow not overpriced) brand with absolutely solid long-time favorite products (like her blushes or powders). If I have to compare, she is like an expensive high-quality Italian cashmere brand in fashion - no matter the trends, this is what you’d go for to feel confident, comfortable and beautiful. Their body care is absolutely sumptuous as well. Thank you as always for sharing your professional tips, Risa🌺🌸🌷

Always great advice. Although since everyone's face's are different, the placement of blush no matter what your age is, isnt the same for everyone . Yes the placement of blush higher on the cheek of a maturing face is somewhat correct, but its not 100% . I think its always good to be open-minded to try different things.

So glad you started talking about placement of blush. I've been seeing a lot of podcasts were makeup artists are advising to place the blush on the cheekbone! I don't follow trends. Never have. I know what looks good on my face, and for my face shape, blushes look good under my cheekbone.

Risa, I use Trish McEvoy Instant Eye Lift and do the triangle of light under my eyes. However, I don't put a powder over it because that just shows my wrinkles under my eyes, which are papery thin, even though I realize nobody really gets that close up. I do use a very fine neutral Fenty powder to set my Trish McEvoy Beauty Balm on the rest of my face, using that press and roll technique. Is that the best way to use Instant Eye Lift? I only put powder where I don't have wrinkles, unless it's a quick bit of blurring powder with a brush.

Hi Rissa 🖐, thank you again for this video. I tried the triangle of light today (never did the fill in triangle that was popular for awhile). But OMG WOW game changer. My eyes looked great today. These were great ideas. I still have a love/hate relationship with powder at times. Depending on the time of the year powder can look really nice on me and other times my skin is just too dry no matter how much I prep and moisturize etc. You've mentioned that Laura Geller powder translucent several times off and on during the last 5-6 years that I have watched you. OmG core memory unlock. Amazing how these hit you out of the blue. Anyway Back when I met and spoke with you when you were at Armani's store my mother-in-law and I were together you helped ne & someone else helped her. You had suggested the Geller powder translucent to us and check Sephora for it. At the time I couldn't afford that powder by myself but she bought it and I paid her half and then when we got home we split that container in half between the two of us to use. And I remember using it and having a container that it was in long time ago haven't used the powder since. But now I want to see if I can find a small sample size or travel size of it to try that powder again now that you mention it. Haha but then again maybe I should hold off and wait because I have a lot of powders that I should probably use first. Although I do love the Givenchy prism Libre that by far is probably my favorite.

QUESTION ❤ I applied a BUXOM lip liner after I applied a Pat McGrath lipstick.. Yes, it did light on so easy … just like you said. However, half an hour later, I looked in the mirror and the liner was off😮 Any suggestions for longer wear? Maybe a little powder 😬 I do have the mini ONE/SIZE setting spray… I have normal to dry skin. Therefore, I only use it in the heat of the summer like it is now… it is a great one, however, too matte on my grown-up girl skin😮. Maybe spray one size on a brush and tap over my lips 🤔(a little one size setting spray snack, I guess never heard anybody)😉 Anybody have any suggestions because I like the look, and as RISA stated the liner just glided smooth and beautiful.

And btw your eyes look amazing as usual. Do you think you might do another hooded eye tutorial? Love the idea of trying a lip color like you said in the beginning, with JUST the lips. Love that you generously shared these helpful tips with us, Risa😊 The way it ALL clicked when you told us how to “properly” tight line so it doesn’t have to transfer to the lower lash line….wow, that would always happen to me! Now I know. Thank you❣️❣️

Love this video. Brought back so many good memories. I was introduced to Trish McEvoy on QVC and love her makeup planners, and brush set. The triangle of light was a game changer for me. Also when I went to the office I'd do the dark shadow tight line. It was easier, thickened my lashes and I thought was more appropriate for the office. Keep up the great work.

Primers do nothing more for me than using a good setting spray. Even that doesn't really do much. To save a step I find a good sunscreen that can act as a semi-primer. Avene is great for that. So is R&R. The only primer that ever seemed to make a difference was Milk Hydrogrip. May go back for that in the fall. My Sephora was out when I went for a refill. I didn't find the ELF dupe as effective as other dupes.

Pro-primer here & dry 54 y.o. skin...I feel dimethicone smooths everything out, making a nice "canvas" for foundation.

Never miss your videos! What highlighting product, cream, liquid or powder would you recommend for mature skin with texture and pores? Maybe best high end and drug store. There are so many recommendations out there it makes it difficult to decide. Appreciate your help 😊

Thank you! The powder tips was very good! The blush...i tried it on my cheecks again, as i did long time ago, and a big NO for my face. My face look flat. But with blush on the new way, it lift my cheeks, it is nice to my face :) Thank you, always nice to see every video you post.

Risa I thoroughly enjoyed this video, thank you for sharing your history in the makeup world, it was so interesting. I am looking forward to trying some of the old school methods, especially the blush. It's 5.30pm here in Australia, the middle of winter and dark so my try outs will have to wait until tomorrow. Love your genuine videos, please keep them coming cause you are one of my favourites.

My first makeup job was with Laura Mercier in 2007. I learned everything I know today from Laura and her top Artists who would visit. I was chosen to do a master class with Laura but the day of the class it was my daughter's wedding! I was so sad!

Oh bummer! I was very intimidated to meet her at age 23, but she was so kind and made everyone feel very comfortable.

For me, primers are necessary depending on where you want to use them. I have oily face skin and oily eyelids. So I NEED a eyeshadow primer. Funnily enough, l don't always use a face primer.

Thanks Risa! Bare Minerals and Smash Box both had primers around the same time . End of 90's - Only pitfall I find with the apples of the cheeks are that as gravity takes it's toll, the apples of the cheeks drop some ... and lose volume ... so we can smile and the apple looks plump and juicy, but when we relax the face the apples are more like dehydrated apple slices! Kind of flattened! Lol....

Great point. I first heard this tip from Wayne Goss before it was a trend and it makes sense. He said as women age, they get deeper hallows under the eyes and concealer is great for dark circles but you may still have hollows. If you take your blush up higher and over that hollow a little bit - it makes your eyes look less sunken. This really works for me! My cheeks have definitely dropped so I apply higher. Makeup is very individual. What it really comes down to is the shape of your face. If you have a thin face, the apples are great because it makes your face appear fuller and younger. But if you have a fuller face (or drooping cheeks) I feel like blush on the apples makes me look like Minnie Mouse 🐭🤡 Like Risa said, there should be no hard and fast "rules". Try different techniques and take pictures. Ask friends and family if you can't decide what looks best. We can do what works best for our own facial structure. I need to wear bronzer/contour higher on my cheekbones not under them, or it drags my face down and I look sad lol. Then I apply my blush above that. But I am always trying new things and if you make a mistake just wash it off. Trends are fun but suit yourself!

@@AllySa33I will have to try that with blush. My skin is in pretty good shape but undereye hollows are the bane of my existence. I have always been afraid blush there would look worse so have avoided any techniques that are near the area

No primer-I’m always afraid it will interfere with my sunscreen. I really enjoyed this-I remember being introduced to the tight line technique and an eye primer at the LM counter back in…the 90’s? Thanks!
