I lucked out and got a 100% wool blanket for free from my local charity/thrift store & used 2 layers to cover the board and then encased it in unbleached muslin. Now I’ll make a washable cover. Thanks. The wool blanket works extremely well.

Just a suggestion, when you make your next cover, use 1'' gingham fabric (I used navy and white) then you have straight lines for pressing your seams against. I also used wool wadding or a heavy felted wool fabric instead of cotton wadding on marine ply - it gives better heat transference and steam distribution.

I haven't had a chance to read the comments yet, so hopefully this is new to some of you. Before attaching the batting, I wrap the whole board with tin foil, shiny side out. This bounces the heat back out at the material. Works amazingly well. Had a friend test it against her wool mat ... she gave her wool mat to her sister and is now using a board set up my way. Good luck.

I am using insulbrite on my regular ironing board (under warm and natural) - I was specifically looking at the comments to see what people thought about only using batting over the wood! This is a great idea!! When I make this - I am definitely going to try foil!!
@LearningAllICan
@LearningAllICan 2 года назад
@@jtfirewalker The other bonus to using the tin foil is if there is any sap in the wood, it attaches to the foil, not the batting. Win, win, all the way around.

I added a wool blanket bought at the thrift store, washed in hot water and dried in the dryer to my ironing board under the cover. It makes it much more padded and returns the heat from the iron back to the fabric.

Would love to chime in also. I have the best ironing board. I used to sew a lot of drapery, etc. it’s plywood then pink insulation foam board (Home Depot), 2-3 layers of regular fleece fabric, and lastly heavy cotton canvas. The foam board is heat proof and mold proof, pinnable and light weight, the fleece dries quickly (I use a lot of steam) and also takes the heat because it’s covered with heavy canvas. and I’ve had it for 20 years. Definitely use common sense and preshrink the canvas. I have a very leaky iron and the stains wash right out.

Sounds wonderful to use! I’ve worked with this foam for years doing stage sets. We had to cut with a hot knife & the fumes get very toxic. Would a hot iron release the chemical toxins into the air ? Have you ever noticed fumes? Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the video. Always nice to see how people do the same thing differently. Please prewash any fabric you plan on using for a top. There is sizing and extra dyes in the fabric which you do not want transferred to a white or light fabric. I covered my board with tin foil first then 2 layers of batting just on top and hanging over about 3 inches on all sides. I made my top with a drawstring hem that goes under the board by 6 inches all around when drawn up tight. Easy to take off for washing. The batting does not move at all because the drawstring top holds everything in place. No staples, no velcro, just sew a hem to put a drawstring thru. I used paracord. But I applaud your idea of making it double sided. I might make a second top to have on hand when the other is in the wash. Thank you for all you do!

My ironing board was made the same way. It fits the width of my cutting table and can be removed should I need all 7 ft. of my table. My inspiration was Jenny's {MSQC} ironing board project and Matt Jordan's {Jordan Fabric's}. The velcro is a nice addition and I think I'll use some of the fabric I picked up from the Destash. I would wash the fabric first as you really don't want to deal with shrinkage later - just sayin'.

Hi, i’d just sew the fourth side closed on my sewing machine using a little larger stitch. To take off, use your “magic” seam riper, or scissors. Why waste all that velcro and have a lumpy ridge on the underside? Also, use batting with aluminum layer on one side to protect the wood. Or, first cover wood with aluminum foil. There is ironing board fabric, by yard, too if you can find it. I used a bread board to have a small ironing surface near my machine for my mini iron. If I were to redo, I’d look for fabric with a grid pattern, even gingham, to help alignment.

We first tried ticking for the stripes, but found it moved & then were crooked. Do you use seam & if yes, does the aluminum foil keep the water from going thru to the wood?

I have done something similar to this myself, but before I started anything, I rounded all the corners on my board. And then on both side, I did THREE coats of a waterproof deck sealant. I wanted to make my wood base as water repellant and resistant as I could, since steam is hot water. I wanted to try to waterproof it so that it would be safe from warping and from any possible mold.

@@SewYeahYes! Sand all the edges with some 220 grit sandpaper. Do this outside. Put the sandpaper over something hard and flat that will fit in your hand while sanding. There are lots of different types of plywood. Make sure you get interior grade that is perfectly smooth. Plywood will remain flat regardless of moisture in the air. It looks like you are using 1/4” thickness which bends a little, 1/2” will not flex but is a lot heavier and more expensive. This type of plywood is commonly sold in 2 foot by 4 foot lengths in any home improvement store. The store may make a free cut for you if you wanted it cut smaller. Do not paint or use a finish on the plywood, just use it raw.

To keep your board dry so that it doesn't warp or separate, wrap aluminum foil around your board with the shiny side out. This also will protect your batting and the foil will transfer the heat back up to your fabric. With the removable and washable cover, it will last longer and if you ever do have to replace it at some point, the only thing you will have to replace is the cover because your board and batting were protected by the aluminum foil. I would personally use a muslin fabric or Ironing board fabric for the cover so that when you are ironing a wet starched fabric, none of the colors from your cover will bleed into your fabric.

Would it Be a good idea to put in a couple of layers of heavy duty Reynolds wrap on the board?

Hi. Wouldn't a layer at the plywood of insulbright help protect the wood?

Sounds like good advice!!!

Looks great. I’d make the seams on the top a little wider. Wouldn’t be so easy to have the seams pull apart, and wouldn’t make the board less useful, in my opinion….
@annblachly8068

I would use French seams throughout.

If you use the Martelli mat with that cutter your blade will last longer. 😉

What type of rotary cutter do you use?

I don’t think you mentioned but what thickness of plywood did you get?
@SewYeah
@SewYeah Год назад
It's really up to you! Whatever thickness you feel works best. We used a pretty thin board, maybe 1/2-1 inch thick. Thanks for watching!

If you are going to wash it, why wouldn’t you prewash the fabric so that you have already accounted for the shrinkage?
@SewYeah
@SewYeah Год назад
Yes, prewash is a must! Sorry for not showing it on the video. Thanks so much for watching!🎈❤😊

What kind of fabric cutter are you using?
@SewYeah
@SewYeah Год назад
Hello. It is a Martelli Rotary Cutter. You can find them on our website here: sewyeahquilting.com/search?type=product&options%5Bprefix%5D=last&options%5Bunavailable_products%5D=show&q=martelli+rotarty+cutter

That is an agronomic rotary cutter. Distributes the pressure when you’re pushing down to cut throughout your hand so it doesn’t hurt so bad. It’s great for people with arthritis or something like that wrong with your hands and it comes in the left or right handed I’ve had one for years that I’ve been afraid to use, but I watched the young lady on I believe it’s the sewing channel and she uses her all the time because she’s arthritis in her hands.

Probably should prewash your cotton fabric before using.... it may not fit on after washing to clean!

Why did you put the Velcro on the top instead of just kind of sort of getting it at the very bottom so you just had a smooth service on both sides?

Why don't just a pillow case and put the velcro on both the inside that way when you need to take it off you just open the edge and take it off. I did that with some of my sofa cushions.

Why not put a zipper on the end …would stay on the very end and not create a Velcro bump on one side or the other
