I put 1 slip in a 5 gal bag and put that trellis you recommended from Amazon in between them. I was also trying to figure out how to keep them from rerooting in my lawn. We ran out of room in the regular garden, I was not patient enough for the slips 😂. Going to grab a kiddie pool for the rest of the slips still coming, I'm not ready to say enough!

I never thought of trying sweet potatoes in my Greenstalk, but I've got some slips so I may try a couple. Curious to see how they turn out!

I have mine growing on the ground. I have a lot of them going. How many sweet potatoes do you usually get per slip? I have a large area covered with vines. Also I would like to mention that I went to produce stand. bought 2 large sweet potatoes and grew slips as you did. However I cut the slips at about 7" and stripped the leaves to two leaves and directly put them in the ground. Watered thoroughly for several days and my slips have taken off. I still cut slips from my producers and plant them in different areas as I harvest or remove other plants using them as a productive ground cover. This eliminated the need to put in a glass. I just took a chance and it worked.

I usually get between 3-6 tubers from each slip. I’ve done that way in the past but they sometimes don’t always take for me.

@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a I figured that was a more guaranteed way to insure they will take. I had so many slips and so much area I just just started plugging them in. And my starters keep making more. 😂 Figure some make it some don't. Your situation requires more success than mine due to space. Thanks for the video you do a great job.

Great point. Yes it’s definitely a much quicker way to plant them.

I put a couple of Porto Rico sweet potato slips in my GreenStalk a couple of weeks ago. The Porto Rico vines bush out so they won't take root wherever they touch the ground. Also planted some, along with some Beauregard slips, in a few grow bags in April. It will be interesting to compare how they do. Can't wait to see how yours do especially compared to your raised bed plantings.

I’ve heard the same thing-that you shouldn’t let the vines “peg” into the ground, but in my experience I’ve always gotten decent, hand sized sweet potatoes in those spots. And I’ve never had small potatoes grow under the original slips. I just let mine do their own thing…but I’m always interested in seeing if there are better ways…thanks for the video!

That’s how I’ve always done it in the past too. It should be interesting to see if it actually affects them.

Yes. You have a good memory. I moved them to a shady spot to try and live out the summer. They are doing good so far

I really like this experiment. Last year I grew sweet potatoes in pots and had white stuff all over the underside of the leaves. Is that from white flies, or fungus…? The size of the potatoes were not very big. I wasn’t sure how to manage the vine growth.
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a 3 месяца назад
Yes, it sounds like white flies. Mine get them bad too during the summer

Did you use one type of soil or a mix of things? I read that they like loamy soil but not quite sure how to achieve that.
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a 3 месяца назад
I reused some Promix. Normally they tend to like sandy soil but I’ve grown them in rich soil from my raised beds before too.

It could be that your BT has gone bad. It’s pretty sensitive to heat. I switched to spinosad when that happened to me.
