A lot of dog owners have the tendency to treat their dogs like they are human. We understand that your dog is part of your family, but dogs operate differently than children! One common thing we see is people talk to their dogs too much and use a ton of words their dogs do not understand! This often occurs during times when their dog needs guidance or training and it can lead to owners reinforcing unwanted behaviors.
Another major mistake people make is when they do not walk their dogs on a regular basis! Structured walks are a crucial part of raising and maintaining the perfect well behaved dog. Simply having your dog run in your backyard is not good enough, even if there is a ton of space. A common issue that occurs when dogs are not walked on a regular basis is the dog never learns to pay attention to their owners, look for guidance, and they often lack structure! Your dog needs to smell, explore, and socialize! Failure to give regular structured walks to your dog can drastically increase the chances of aggression and anxiety!
Also, make sure you socialize your dog early and often! We often get called after someone's dog has bitten a person or another dog. This is mainly due to lack of socializing! Please keep your dog's critical socialization period in mind. It lasts until they are 16 weeks of age. By then, your dog needs to have seen over a hundred dogs and people! Do not wait until it is too late!
Another big problem is when people do not crate train their dogs. Some people think crates are mean. You know what is meaner? Allowing a dog to accidentally consume something that is life threatening!. Young or untrained dogs can easily get in trouble, you need to watch them 24/7! Keep in mind to start young and teach them that it is not scary! This will make the crate a positive experience for them! One thing you need to consider as well is to take off all of your dog's collar when they are out of sight or in the crate! Any collar can easily get stuck on the crate of other surfaces which can suffocate your dog!
Failure to teach your dog boundaries can also get your dog killed. A very common issue is when dogs run away or bolt out of your front door! Now you have a loose off leash dog that can potentially get hit by a car! Do yourself a favor and teach your dog control at the front door and other boundaries as well!
We love to also work on claiming food and other items as well! Failure to teach your dog control around items and food can lead to issues ranging from a minor inconvenience to life threatening! Thousands of dogs die every year by consuming something that is poisonous to them! Medicine is easy for them to grab and can be extremely dangerous.
Do not give your dogs rawhides. Dogs chew them and as they get smaller, they pose a massive choking hazard. Most rawhides are also not natural and contain a ton of chemicals! We prefer antlers, marrow, and Benebones which are much safer.
You should also avoid using pee pads. These are absolutely the worst. People tend to use them for the first year of their dog's life and in the moment it seems easier. Unfortunately, the transition away from them can be a big problem. This can make it nearly impossible to potty train your dog. Put the hard work in early on instead!
Lastly, make sure you are performing handling exercises with your puppy when they are young. For us handling exercises include handling their body, grooming exercises, and their resources. Make sure you mess with their teeth, nails, ears, and paws as well. Make sure you work on this at a young age and continue doing it for the rest of their lives!
We hope this video helps you determine the correct training plan for your dog! These are the common mistakes people make, which usually leads to us coming out after their dogs have already developed some major issues! Do not let your dog be another statistic!

I adopted a 9 month old Border Collie from the animal shelter that was on the kill list. He has had ZERO training. I’m in over my head. Amazing, sweet, and smart dog but I am trying to train a highly anxious dog the fundamentals he would have learned as a puppy. HELP!!!

Congrats on the new dog! I would definitely start with the heel command. Trying to teach obedience commands with a dog that is excitable or anxious is a challenge. We use heel to calm them down and then start the other obedience commands. This works extremely well and makes everything easier for you and for the dog. Here is a video on how to start the heel command and stop leash pulling with an adult dog. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DdeHrc4pCmA.html Let us know what questions you have after you watch it!
