The Waffle House Index is an informal metric named after the Waffle House restaurant chain to determine the effect of a storm and the likely scale of assistance required for disaster recovery.
The measure is based on the reputation of the restaurant chain Waffle House for staying open during extreme weather and for reopening quickly, albeit sometimes with a limited menu, after very severe weather events such as tornados or hurricanes. The chain's disaster preparedness measures include assembling and training "Waffle House jump teams" to facilitate fast reopening after disasters

Thanks Nate for the update. We are so glad you and Gracie are ok. Waffle House was the second place we went to after Ida last year. Winn Dixie beat them to opening first. Winn Dixie opened 8 hours after the hurricane cleared out. These workers are amazing!

Glad you & Gracie are OK, Nate! Our Electricity here in Orlando was out for about 17 hours, but it's back up now. Lots of trees & branches down around us. We're only a few blocks from Lake Eola & that flooded like they've never seen before. Prayers for everyone hit & everyone where it's headed now. 🙏

Thanks Nate for the update. We did well over here in Titusville but I have to agree with Gracie that the wind roaring during the hurricane is a very scary sound. We had a little flooding in our backyard and onto our screen porch but we managed with a shop vac. We never lost power but I was really worried we might.

With 181K subscribers- I don't have an issue at all with you sharing that you and Gracie are ok and how it was to be just out and about. We live in rural Georgia and after big storms, there are always people out and about 'checking things out'. Glad you guys are safe. Our fur babies get anxious as well. It's the static electricity in the air- they can sense pressure changes. We never found those coats and such to help. That's cool about getting the campers out of the woods.

So grateful you and Gracie made it through the storm without damage to your home.🙏🏻 I I know how dangerous and devastating hurricanes an be. Our home was damaged last year when Hurricane Ida made a direct hit on our Louisiana coastline. Our town of Houma and all of the smaller surrounding communities were hit with all of her power and might. The one year anniversary of Ida’s destruction just passed. We are still not able to get back into our home. Still looking at approx 6 months more. The closest place we could find available housing was 2 hours away. It is very hard to oversee the work from that far away. We are very blessed that we have been fine, just ready to get home. Our son, his beautiful wife and their four beautiful girls were displaced also. Luckily one of his life long friends offered his pool house to help them out.They have three children and our son has four. The kids had live in playmates and what could have been a hard situation turned into fun times. So thankful for good friends with big hearts. It has taken a year for their repairs because they had to gut the house back to the studs. Nothing has been easy, but thank God for friends. We were without electricity for 31 days, I think. After a while, everything is a blur. We had a whole house Generator, but it died out very early in the disaster. No matter how well prepared you are, these weather disasters have a way of messing everything up. My prayers are for all of those affected. The men who came from all over to help get the electricity back up were our heroes. This community of workers were treated like the heroes they were. Glad you and Gracie are safe 💕🐾 when I was in Georgia and South Carolina I ate at the Waffles houses dwn there. I like the Waffle houses further dwn south. When I was in Orlando and Tampa last fall I kept passing by them wanted to go in but just didn't get to. I'm gonna go this time I come dwn to Florida

Hey Nate. Another great video. As you suggested, some of us that were required to evacuate flood zones escaped to Orlando. We stayed at Universal's (relatively) new Dockside Inn. The staff was outstanding! While they don't usually allow pets, they let us bring our dog free of charge and even had "pet relief" areas outside AND inside for when it got too rainy/windy. You mentioned taking care of service industry people. We thanked just about everything hotel staff member we ran into, since they were serving us instead of being with their families. During the stay, I said to my family "I bet we could go eat at Waffle House, if you want something different." Apparently, I was correct!

It’s so interesting to see WDW vloggers and Orlando folks out and about on Thursday when here in Daytona on the east coast we were just getting started on Thursday morning and it lasted all the way to around 11:00pm that night. We had devastating flooding in our county and I was watching our street flood all the way up to our house all day. It didn’t get in the house, but it was nerve wracking to say the least. Weather is wild.
