Oxalates, or oxalic acid, are naturally found in many "healthy" foods, especially plant-based foods like spinach and chard, nuts and seeds, legumes, and nightshades. Not only can they inhibit the absorption of nutrients in your foods, but they can build up in your body and cause numerous problems.

NOW I KNOW why me and my mom had carpal tunnel and arthritis all these years!! My mom EVERY YEAR grows rhubarb and makes pies and crisps with it! I would never tell her this as she already thinks I’m crazy and won’t listen to me as I’m the Scapegoat of the family!

I'm sorry to hear that. My husband's family is the same way. My husband started to realize that a lot of what I was saying about a lot of things was true, and he totally changed his diet and no longer has the few issues he had. He tries to get his family to listen, though, and they think we're absolutely bonkers. Luckily, my mom generally listens to me as she knows I spend hours and hours researching and experimenting with myself before saying anything to anybody else. 😏 She started a modified carnivore diet (not super strict, but mostly meat) and immediately lost 20 pounds that she thought she'd never lose pretty effortlessly. Her side of my family has lots of carpal tunnel and digestive issues. I was starting to get painful wrists, so we'll see. Hopefully, it won't develop into arthritis now. Oxalates get totally blown off, but I'm convinced they are a huge problem. There are people who need dialysis for life (or who have even died) after overdosing on oxalates. There are anecdotes of people going on green cleansing challenges and then having severe problems afterward. Those who are lucky find the problem and can reverse the damage. Sadly, some are too late.

Thanks you - I relate so much to your story. I was prescribed a lot of tetracyclines when I was younger too (you mention this in your other video). It feels like such a long journey to try and rectify the damage from multiple courses of antibiotics, inappropriate "healthy" eating etc... It also feels cruel somehow that many foods are known as "healthy" but can be so destructive. Doctors too can be so dismissive of thoroughly disabling health conditions resulting from these misinformed attempts to get well. . Harsh too to go to the lengths to change your diet like this for it to include oxalate dumping! Thank you though for all your detective work im also so pleased you're getting so much better. I too have been on this journey and had only thought of oxalates being a problem for people with kidney stones. I am going to gradually reduce them but keep some in as you suggest. I don't understand where people on a carnivore diet get their vitamin C, magnesium, phytonutrients etc. Do you eat any fruit or veg on it? Thanks again excellent videos so appreciated! 😊
@Thethingswellmake
@Thethingswellmake Год назад
Animal products actually have a lot of vitamins. They have vitamins that you can't generally get from plants. (Think Vitamin B12- and they're a great source of natural vitamin D if you eat the fat of animals that have been out in the sun!) They even have vitamin C, and it's said that you don't need as much vitamin C if you don't get your carbs in. Lots of people have been on this for decades without getting scurvy. Vitamin C is essential, but we've been led to believe that we need more of it than we probably do. (Maybe those on a bad diet do need more?) I was taking large doses thinking I was protecting myself from illness during the pandemic craziness and it turns out that in high doses, it's a precursor to oxalates. So, I was doing more harm than good by taking it and just contributing to my high oxalate diet. I do take potassium citrate, magnesium citrate, and calcium citrate to help rid myself of oxalates. Some carnivore people take electrolytes, especially at first. But, no, I haven't been eating fruits and vegetables- other than a small bite here or there to try something if we're out and about.

Thank you for this!! I saw your pictures of your rash and had this almost permanent goosebumps for 2022 and thought it was because I was mega dosing vitamin D3 and now I’m thinking my body was dumping as I was lowering my oxalate too after doing mega spinach smoothies from the 2015- 2018 time frame!
@Thethingswellmake
@Thethingswellmake Год назад
I no longer supplement with D3. I was for a while. During the pandemic, I thought it would be a good idea to supplement with D3 and Vitamin C (amongst other things). What's crazy is that vitamin C is also a precursor for oxalate formation in our bodies. So, it isn't recommended in high doses. (I was taking crazy high doses apart from my super high oxalate diet!) I now try to get sun whenever I can, exposing as much skin as I can. I also try to eat the fat of animals who have been out in the sun. It's a great source. I saw a video a while back explaining how "vitamin" D is different and that it is really a hormone and not a vitamin. It shared experiments using vitamin D3 supplements and how they didn't have the same positive effects as natural D3. If I find it, I'll try to link to it for you. I think vitamin D is super important, but supplementing with it may not be the best. I stopped most supplements as I now worry about doing more harm than good. I am taking electrolytes and some B vitamins temporarily to help detox the oxalates. Was your rash itchy? Mine was crazy bad. There is also a keto rash that some people get when they go low carb. I'm not sure if it is related or something different, but if your diet change also dropped a lot of carbs, maybe it's something else to look into!

I don't know if my problems were only from oxalates but maybe from other things as well, because I've found that I do best on a carnivore diet, cutting out all plant foods aside from occasional spices when I have chicken or pork. I've been carnivore for a year and a half and the improvements I've had are low key miraculous.

I feel the same way! I'm not sure if it's all oxalates, but the fact that I had oxalate dumping symptoms made me investigate the topic more. When I realized how high my diet was in oxalates for so long, my guess is that it was a major issue for me!

I have been on keto diet for five months. Loved it. Then I thought I would try my hand in carnivore and for the most part I am carnivore now sometimes I’ll have like a tablespoon of no sugar added barbecue sauce from sf rays bbq sauce, which is low carb or sauté shrimp in butter and garlic, then at last minute add in maybe 1/4 cup of heavy cream just till warmed all to make my meat taste a little different. But most days I’m carnivore at 0 carbs. But I’ve heard a lot of people talk about oxalate, and I just really didn’t understand it even though I would listen to what they’re saying, but your talk for some reason it was good for me understood exactly what you were saying and I now know what it means so I want to thank you for having this video on it. It was very much helpful for me. Glad you’re doing good on carnivore and so many things have cleared up for you. That’s awesome.!! Ps. I think paleo is pronounced like when you pay a bill it’s pay Leo. Thanks again

I'm still actually going through oxalate dumping cycles and a lot of the issues have come back at times. Little by little, though. At least some things are much improved and only get worse during the oxalate dumping cycles. I've increased my electrolytes and that seems to be helping again. BTW- with pronunciation things. I live in Spain, so I often pronounce things the way they are pronounced here. My American friends tease me when I pronounce Wi-fi "wee-fee", but that's how it's said here and I never think to pronounce it the other way as it sounds weird to me like that. 🤣🤣🤣

Hello, thank you for your videos, they have given me a massive insight into everything! I think I am having the same issues as you. I have been on carnivore diet now for a little over two weeks (beef only, salt and water) and overall I feel very good on it and want to continue. However 3 days ago I suddenly got hives on my hands and they are getting worse and are very itchy. I’ve never had hives before so this is something very new to me! I have seen a few videos and I am thinking it’s probably oxalate dumping as my diet before was very ‘healthy’ consisting mainly of vegetables, nuts, seeds, nut milks etc 🤦🏼‍♂️ and now I have zero oxalates. Today I have had 2 cups of green tea to see if that helps with the hives. I am just wondering…. What is your plan now? I know you have a few oxalate beverages, are you going to slowly drop them and eventually have no oxalates? Or keep them for a while? I’m a little bit confused on what to do. I’ve followed sally norton’s advice with the tea but do I need to reduce it over the coming weeks? Thank you in advance 🙏🏻

I'll probably make a new video about this soon. I thought I was much better as I was over 6 months into the process, but I had a major oxalate dumping episode again after having zero oxalates for a while. It was so bad, that I ended up with a new UTI. I have decided to incorporate small amounts back in for at least a few more months. I'm definitely not ready to completely stop any time soon. I'm also considering trying to get Sally back for another chat to focus especially on oxalate dumping.

Has anyone else had parasthesia and zapping feelings on your skin with oxalate dumping? Or facial flushing and numbness? I am currently experiencing that after cutting WAY back on oxalates since I started having kidney and bladder pain without infection. I'm also experiencing pain in my fingertips, hives, itchiness, random aches and pains and I also get freezing cold like I have a fever but I dont. Great video btw!
@Thethingswellmake
@Thethingswellmake Год назад
Thank you! Yes, I had the red, hurting numb face a few times at first- during the time I also had the hives. Later on, I had a few bouts of the super freezing like you mentioned- but no fever and actually low temperature. (My husband had to bring me an electric blanket, I felt so bad for like an hour each time.) Both times I got that fever-like symptom, I had a small amount of nut butter (one tiny spoonful) and that seemed to help. It cleared up a bit later. I looked in the trying low oxalates facebook group and it seems to happen to others too. I haven't had any of that recently, though, so I think that while I'm still clearing some, the worst of it is over. (Knock on wood!)
@funnybunnies1724
@funnybunnies1724 Год назад
@Thethingswellmake Not sure if I'm dealing with oxalate dumping but it could very well be since I was consuming an unbelievable amount of oxalates. Like you, I thought I was being good to my body but I just kept feeling sicker and sicker. Since drastically reducing oxalates I feel like I'm on the brink of death and went to the hospital twice. Everything was normal besides evidence of a possibly passing a kidney stone. This is miserable business and I'm praying that you're at the end of it. God bless and thank you for replying. ❤️

En que tiempo más o menos se podrían ver resultados favorables en la dieta carnivore ?
@Thethingswellmake
@Thethingswellmake Год назад

This is not high priority to start researching the scientific evidence behind all this, but I do have a big problem right away with so many of these foods as categorized unhealthy that have been eaten by mankind for thousands of years and now suddenly we've only discovered this, in the past 60 years ?

A lot of the vegetables we eat today have been genetically modified by scientists so that they would be less "bitter" making it more edible. The food pyramid was designed by the Department of Agriculture, not scientists/doctors. So when you start to research you'll realize how the food industry is just like the government. Try cod liver for these reactions. Works better than antihistamines
@Thethingswellmake
@Thethingswellmake Год назад
Thanks for the tip! I very rarely resort to medications and only used them about 2 days when desperate and not finding anything that worked to help the itching. I may have used the cream for a few more days, but we went to a natural spring nearby and I bathed in that and it helped immensely. I brought a bottle of the water home and used that on my skin and found that I didn't need the cream anymore. It was already starting to heal, though, too. I generally take cod liver oil almost daily anyway, but not sure if I was taking it when I had the reaction. If I ever have anything like that again, though, I'll give it a try!

Are you genuinely asking? We speak Spanish at home, and I've spoken Spanish at home for the last 25+ years. I often find myself using the Spanish accentuation of words I don't/didn't use a lot. I rarely have a chance to speak in English with people. So, perhaps not. Or maybe it's a pronunciation of the area I came from. In any case, you say tomato, I say tomato, as long as we understand each other...
