I'm Aussie. I've been cooking 'roo for years. It's so lean that it's easy to cardboard. The best method is to velvet it, then cook it any way ya want. Cooee!
I might be wrong but as an Australian I feel like Roo is one of those meats you try once and never go out of your way to eat again... It's not bad but..
Looks like carry over cooking. Roo is unforgiving, 20s too long will ruin it, no joke. Also there was no sauce to go with it and in my expereince a sweet jus with a lot of body does a lot to help the texture of roo.
Glad to hear you liked Australia, if you get the chance again I can Recommend Brisbane / Gold Coast in Queensland, should also save you about 2hrs flight time each way if you are coming from Seoul.
Skippy the bush kangaroo 😄 Aussie version of Lassie in America. I am a Aussie only had kangaroo once made me sick. They have cook it the right way hope yours was cooked right 😅. Maybe like a rabbit or deer meat?
Lots of Strayans think its awful meat. Im from New Zealand, and its my favourite meat out of everything ive eaten. Ive had your standard stuff... Cow, chicken, sheep, deer and pig... In Aussie, I had crocodile, ox and kangaroo. Kangaroo is a slight leap above everything else for me. The texture, the slight gaminess, the overall taste. Id eat roo, most days of the week.
yeah it's real healthy too. Though the flavour depends a lot on the location, breed, climate, and season. I've had some that was delicious, and some that was pretty vile. I reckon a lot of aussies give it a try, go for the cheap stuff by the pet food section in Coles, have a bad experience, then get turned off for life.
You need some gravy. That looks so dry. Maybe a kangaroo curry or ground kangaroo? I would like to try stir frying it. Kangaroos are in plague proportions and a farmer once told me, for every kangaroo that lives, that's one less sheep he can sustain. Great video. We don't see it in every shop and usually just a few cuts.
Nice video. I understand your curiosity about eating crocodile. I have eaten alligator white meat before. I pan fried it with blackened seasoning. The texture of the meat is very simlar to chicken. The white meat for alligator is the jaw meat and tail meat. So those are the specific meat portions of the crocodile you probably want to try (in the future).
Shame you didn't get to go to Sydney. Lots of great places to try. Chinatown, Koreatown, Frango's, Ogalo just to name a few. Maybe Next time. Hope you enjoyed your Off Camera places too. 'Roo Stew' is quite common here...definitely an acquired taste. Now a Kangaroo Curry called 'Kurroo' or 'Curroo' THAT would be Interesting!
Kangaroo is real hard to cook well, maybe if you went to a sit down place might've been a lil better than delivered. But yes, we have way too many Kangaroos in Aus, so feel free to come often and eat more.
When I've eaten kangaroo in restaurants it has been very tender. You could slice through it like butter. But they always looker 'pinker' than the meat you're eating here. I would agree yours has been overcooked, which would account for the reduced tenderness.
I prefer my roo in a stew. Like a beef stew but roo. Slow cooked for a couple of hours. Swap out bay leaves for lemon myrtle leaves. Kangaroo has to be cooked medium rare if eating steak.
Shame you didn't get to go to Sydney Ben. Lots of great places: Chinatown, Koreatown, Ogalo, Frangos just to name a few. Well, there's always Next time. Hope you enjoyed the Off Camera places too. Roo Stew is actually quite common here. Definitely an acquired taste. Now a Kangaroo Curry called a 'Curroo' THAT would be Interesting...
As an Aussie we typically only eat kangaroo when.. 1. It's half price at the supermarket and the budget this month is tight 2. You're on a highly restrictive diet and need big protein bang for your calorie. 3. You're at a function, or catered event and your only meat option was kangaroo (either that or you gotta choose the vegan meal or fish). 4. You're a farmer, and its easier to butcher the pest kangaroos that you cull instead of incinerating/burying them. Otherwise we wouldnt normally eat it voluntarily. The native animal Aussies have that make for best (legal) eating is crocodile by far. Very good stuff, make sure you try croc next time
Bang on with your Kangaroo harvesting spill Ben, totally ok to eat them as far as Aussies are concerned, and as you said, they are hunted by specific people to control the population (for their own good) so ethical as well.
This Man has the whole periodic table of elements, but chooses zinc, a metal famous for being the 1940s diner countertop. I have no idea what this means.
Salt, pepper, garlic and lemon juice squeezed onto your kangaroo steak to tenderise it and chuck it on the grill and you'll have yourself a real good kangaroo steak
Kudos to you ... roo is a great meat, we eat at least once a week. Its better when marinated and seared. The taste is irony and it is a lean meat. And it is a great way of being sustainable. Thanks for all the great videos, definitely come back. Open invite to you and yours to a Family Sunday BBQ
