In this video, we show you how to field dress and break down (de-bone) a Bison into manageable size pieces to get it back to camp. This technique is similar to that I use on deer and elk, with just much bigger pieces. Last year our team was lucky to win the opportunity to hunt Bison in Northern BC. We had a successful hunt and came home with two Bison.

Thanks for the content. I have a cow tag for late Sept in Southern Utah. Wanted to see if any major differences between bison and elk. Similar, both a lot of work (but worth it). Good refresher!

Nice job - I cant imagine how much work that is - I get tired out doing routine white tails. Also nice clean job on the hind quarter. I cant believe you worked out the hip socket with a deboning knife -nicely done- I only use the deboning knife for the back straps. It may be helpful for beginners to detail the hip socket - that is the key to getting out that hind quarter-

I read somewhere that the way the Indians did it was to roll the buff on its stomach, splay out the legs to hold it upright then skin down from the backbone, spread the hide at the bottom and fillet the meat placing on the hide, keeps meat clean, Im no pro just read that somewhere Thanks for the video good job!

To avoid freezing your meat on a winter hunt, we used to stack all fresh meat in a tight pile, then shovel and fully cover all with a mound of at least a foot of well compacted snow. This is usually good for a couple days or more in 20-30 below…maybe some inconsequential freezing around ankles. NO plastic until butchered & ready for freezer. Nice young fatty looken animal!

I love the mini cooler idea. Great tip! I mainly use plastic to transport the meat back to where we will hang it. Plastic protects it from potential comtamination throughout the transportation process. For example, our snowmobile sleds have tranported chainsays and fuel. I like to get the plastic off as soon as possible so moisture and heat can I skate before putting a game bag on the meat to protect it.

Wow, in the field. That must yield an enormous amount of meat? Can you use the hide? Coat, rug, boots,etc?

Absolutely. We had the hide tanned. Now it’s a beautiful blanket that drapes over the couch. Very comfortable and cozy.

Love these videos I’m 12 years old and a bowhunter (I just hunt whitetail deer and jackrabbit so far) I truly love the sport and this channel I hope one day I could have a memorable hunt on something as impressive as a bison great video keep it up 👍 also if you wouldn’t mind I have one question what draw weight would you would recommend for whitetail I currently have my compound at 45 pounds but don’t no if you would recommend higher or to stay the same

Hey thanks for the comment. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos and learning something. To be honest I’m not the guy to ask about bow hunting. I have a bow but I’m just learning myself. I think my draw weight is about 50lbs and I was planning to hunt mule deer once I feel confident. Still got some work to do.

I have seen some people use a 243 on a bison I find that to be really dumb. I mean a 243 is Nick named a deer rifle for a reason it's not intended for some north America s biggest game.

This is weird, when humans get stabbed or shot we bleed like crazy but hes carvin off chunks n its not all bloody
@EatWildDylan
@EatWildDylan 3 года назад
Infj-t guy all the blood bleeds out after the shot. We aim to hit the animal in the lungs to it dies quietly and bleeds out. After that, there’s not much blood left in the body. And once the heart stops, then no blood gets pumped.

what caliber did y'all use?
@EatWildDylan
@EatWildDylan 3 года назад
We shot one with. 30-06 and the other with a win 300. I would lean towards the 300 or a 338. Shot placement is critical. They have long thick hair which make it hard to pick out the ideal point of aim. And their lungs sit lower than other ungulates.

Wood bears be able to smell your kill?
@EatWildDylan
@EatWildDylan Год назад
It depends. The warmer the temperature, the quicker the smells will develop and attract bears and other critters. If it is below freezing then it might take a while for critters to stumble on the carcass. As a general rule, we work as fast as we can to get the meat out to avoid any conflict.

Good work, I’ve never processed a critter nearly that big. No gloves? Watch those parasites.
@EatWildDylan
@EatWildDylan Год назад
thanks for watching! I’ve never had much luck wearing gloves. They usually break down throughout the process and my hands get bloody anyways. I’m just really careful to wash my hands after in hot soapy water. I’m not aware of any risk to humans from exposure to through the gutting process. What parasite are you concerned about?

Did you pray to the Great Spirit, The Great Creator over the animal by thanking him for his sacrifice so, that you can eat him, did you thank God for the kill that he provided for you so that you can nourish your body and fill your belly full of food?
