eBay Hakko FX-951 to cheap to be real, let’s see and tear it down. Since the auction winning price was lower then most fake ones, I was worried this might also be a fake. So only one way to find out and that’s to look inside it.
I started a thread on the EEVBlog that has pictures and explains the differences between a fake unit and a real unit from an eBay ad perspective. This would help you identify a real one if your looking to buy one.

Nice video, looking at the guts i do believe it is a genuine 951.. nothing like fakes ive opened up...

Yea, I was also concerned but figured I would have used eBay policy about selling fakes against the seller if I needed. I can identify most fakes just from a picture with the different font in the front. They also blur out the hakko name if they have been reported to eBay in the past, so that’s a big givaway. I took a risk based on all the positive ratings and after messaging him for a little time asking questions. Sometimes you do get a good deal on eBay, just not that often. Thanks for watching.

Yes, yes it is. I got lucky with this one. If it was fake I would have pulled eBay into the sale. The OEM boxes make me wonder if it was repaired or refurbished. Either way all the parts looked new and clean so I was happy. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching. Scott

please tell me the transformer on the secondary side what should be the voltage?

Refer to comments in jwrelectro's review of the FX-951. I think you will find the answer. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YYZs_pewRd4.htmlm6s

He does a nice breakdown of the PCB, but I don’t think he mentions the voltage in the secondary. Nice guy, I’ve talked with him in the past for his permission to list his video in my video description. I didn’t realize I had the URL with the minutes and seconds directly to his PCB board review part. I can’t seem to find the specs on the transformer. I’m going to have to tear mine down again and take a measurement now. If your looking for a 110V replacement: www.tequipment.net/HakkoB2836.html For a part list if you looking for the 220V version you can see this part list for the last numbers: www.tequipment.net/HakkoB2836.html

My fault I meant to say look in the comments section, left out the word section: Here is the replay to a question: "Glad you found the video useful. The loading on the transformer changes due to the heater circuits so it has a range. Using an Amprobe AM-140-A DMM and measuring directly at the transformers secondary winding I had a range of 25.5 volts to 28.2 volts 60Hz. " Hope this helps.

@GadgetReviewVideos 6 лет назад
jwrtiger That sounds correct. Based off the fact that transformers are not tuned to a 1% tolerance it would me normal to see this range on secondary voltage. The different secondary reading they saw is from the grid changing voltages over the day and the load being pulled from the main board. It also why switching power supplies are more efficient and keep a better regulated output voltage. The mains voltage in a home is never the same on different parts of the grid. The soldering station is a 24VDC station, but this is kept the same by the voltage regulator, not the transformer. Because the mains voltage input on the primary side can fluctuate the bridge rectifiers and voltage regulators are designed for a wide range of input voltages. This might change from the mains input to the primary causing a different range on the secondary side. For example, I live in the US and they call the grid a 110VAC grid, but my home usually sits at 124VAC. But my electronics, tv’s, and other things are not being damaged since they are designed to still run up to 140VAC from the mains. This design is because of grid mains input differences that will change the primary received on the transformer, and change the output on the secondary. It also compensates for the differences in the windings that vary slightly on the primary and secondary of transformers. Some times the input from the mains on the primary can change throughout the day as the grid tries to stabilize also affecting the secondary output and different readings. Even a small voltage regulator like the 78L08 that’s rated for 8VDC out up to 100ma can accept from 10VDC to 30VDC in the input side to compensate for this variance coming from the bridge rectifier, that is different based off the transformer secondary, and that’s different because of the change on the mains feeding the primary from one home to another. A the transformer might output 28VAC at my house with 125VAC in, and would be a different output voltage at a home with only 104VAC on their “110V mains” coming into the house. This is also why the PCB and mains components cane be the same on a 110VAC version compared to a 220VAC version. The only difference is the transformer from one grid voltage to another.

Could you put up the link to where you bought it?

It was a random eBay seller, not sure how he supplied these but it was a hobby store and seems he has shut it down since then. I usually put links in the video description for those I have had good customer service with, but I ask first. He also requested when he was running the store that I don’t link to him being a small reseller at the time. I believe he was retired and just supplementing his pension. Not sure why he shit down, he had great ratings. But you have to be persistant to find a deal, I’ve only had w good deals on eBay actions. Fakes flood the market and it’s hard to tell what you buyungnjs real or fake.

Sorry, he decided to retire and closed the store. That why he’s not listed in the video description. Unlike most of my videos I do try to provide as much information in the description and recommend a seller I’ve had a good experience with. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching, Scott

The fakes don't have the sleep sensor wire. Also recently the HAKKO brand may be missing. Fake also has 2 pcbs, a huge thru-hole microcontroller, and an non-insulated power mosfet.

True, recently some of them photo shop the logo off so they won’t get banned from a site for selling it with recent policy changes. But it still might have the name/logo on it if you buy it. If it still has the name in the sales add they are still breaking the policy and you can get a refund despite the pictures being photo shopped. I have a link to a EEVBlog thread showing some of these pictures and things to look for in the description of the video. The insides can change constantly. Yes, a lot of fake items with micro controllers are through whole since they can pay pennies for someone else to assemble them. I try to identified the outside differences of some with pictures, this way people don’t end up buying a fake one to begin with. Counterfeits eventually get really hard to identify sometimes, I’ve seen some changes to some items that look very convincing. The sleep port was mentioned @ 4:51 in text, also mention in the EEVBlog thread listed in the description of the video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LEs2pzw5mYE.html&t=4m51s
