As a 20 yr re-seller I could do many videos on this topic, but I will just note the overall patterns I see. FUD is real…Fear Uncertainty & Doubt. This is my 6th election cycle that I’ve been a re-seller through, my sales have ALWAYS dipped during those. When inflation started a couple of years ago I knew there would be some “pain” ahead, and now go to the grocery store, gas station or classifieds to find a rental apartment and then go to my eBay store to buy a knick knack. Point being, my customers are struggling to put food on the table, a roof over head, and shoes on their kids. Lastly, there is a lot of international conflict going on and that creates uncertainty as well. My adjustments: watch channels like this to constantly see what IS moving, sell more useful items, concentrate on a $5-$20 price point (people will ALWAYS spend, under any condition), buy precious metals as a hedge against inflation, and stack cash. Mark my words…this coming summer will be painfully slow BUT could potentially be the BEST buying time in a decade. But most importantly always remember CHRIST IS KING! No matter what happens, HE’S got our back! ❤

I've been saying this election cycle could be a nightmare for smaller sellers for all the reasons you mention and more. For example many economists are anticipating high fuel prices as we move towards November. The fact several of the largest oil refineries in American are now Saudi owned never move into consumers mindsets but its fact. There are those who have said for years and years and years on end America should have big oil refineries under government control as fuel costs float down into ever so many aspects of citizens lives. Take inflation, people tend want one causation so they can single things out and point blame. Inflation is more often a spider with a crapload of legs that often end up intersecting/interconnecting especially among what happens with commodities. 95% of Americans dont even seem to understand commodities which intersect with ever so many aspects of life and is a competitive environment, supply and demand globally. One big change that may well happen this year if you're predictions are correct is that retail and retail online will become more aggressive than perhaps ever before in the history of the Internet. They already are in fact and have been coming out of Covid per se not that the world is past Covid, its not. That is to say Covid hasn't mysteriously disappeared, its still mutating getting people ill but the long term impacts in ever so many respects might well be like The Spanish Flu who's ancestors remain with us to this very day in various flu's. Economic impacts is but one area, America has millions atop millions of living folks who have long term medical impacts of Covid and that equates to expenses within finite resources. We've the lowest jobless rate since the 1960's, more jobs available than people wanting to work them. There was just a study/book came out that actually right now consumers have more spending power than they had pre-pandemic, they're actually making more money in the jobs sectors than before. Yet the trailing problems of housing, medical expenses, issues with commodities, war and general uncertainty among folks makes them feel as if they dont. The author for example spoke towards homes in America. If one is shopping for a home the prices shot up over time of the Pandemic, handfuls of reasons nor have they normalized. On the other side of that equation are those who already own homes and find the value thereof have skyrocketed leaving them smiling and will loose their minds if things were to normalize. Most of humanity cares to try make the complex simple yet those two terms never equate well in the real world.

Comes down to what you sell, your prices, and the what the buyers willing to pay for any given item. Economy has a huge part play if it comes down to paying for food and bills vs buying collectibles or a new pair of shoes online most people are going to take care there needs over wants. I think the average eBay buyer goes to eBay because they are looking for a deal or to find the things that you really can’t find on other platforms. We’ll never be able to pin down what drives the buyer to buy your item? Everyone has their own reasons for what they do or don’t do? Maybe we should start taking eBay surveys asking the buyer what specifically made them purchase the item they did? Either way I try not to get caught up in the theories and just keep doing my best to list quality items at a good price and give excellent customer service. Great information as always. One thing I have noticed is that you keep saying that eBay's calculated shipping way overcharges. I went through my listings and found that eBay's calculated is right on for over the counter Post Office prices. The trick is to have the correct weight and box sizes in you listings. Sellers get a big discount on the shipping, this does help to cover the price of my shipping supplies. As a smaller seller, I do appreciate this discount. Thanks for all the info.

I don’t think they are purposefully hiding listing, I think it’s in the code and may have to do with the title. I had a few things a while back that when I searched I would not find my listing, like at all! So I changed up the title and it sold a few weeks later

Numbers never lie - put the blinders on and keep moving forward with INCOME PRODUCING ACTIVITIES. I've had an eBay account since 1998, and a totally different business I have owned since 2000, but the one thing the two businesses share are a successful conclusion: a sale is made. The waves go out and the waves come in as Jim Rohn would share in his business minded "classes". Networking matters - word of mouth is powerful. Expending too much energy on things out of your control is wasted energy. The biggest enemy is often the 6 inches between your ears!

There has to be a way for ebay to figure out who goes on the first search page - and I would expect them to change things around in order to try to let everybody sell something - which means if your sales are down, somebody else's is up. I would hate it if I thought the same people came up on the first page every time.

I’ve seen so many mysterious upturns and downturns in sales over the years, I finally decided that any thought I gave to figuring out why was distracting me from the things under my direct control. So my answer to any upturn or downturn now is List. I keep an eye on my listing quality by revising things when they come eligible to send offers and proofread the listing then to make sure the shipping choices are correct and fix any typos so that if my offer isn’t accepted, at least I know it’s listed correctly. That’s the extent of it.

You make a great point - it is OUT of our control what eBay does or doesn't do to accounts, stores, listings, etc..I just focus on non-eBay things during downswings, its soooo hard sometimes especially when you feel your sales were rolling along doing great then the rug gets pulled out from under you for no apparent reason.

I’ve been a flipper for 25+ years. Some of the ups and downs are from one person seeing the item, then sharing in a niche group, like a forum or now FB group. That effect was noticable even from Craigslist from well over a decade ago, which has NO incentive to push an ad! For example, I couldn’t figure out why after a year of crickets, suddenly I had dozens of inquiries about my 40 year old Renault that had been converted to electric. I only found out months later, my ad had been featured on a national blog as part of “Project car hell”. LOL So 2 dead stock band jackets in a few days, probably one was featured in a music video or some influencer wore one and a few dozen people bought up all the ones on eBay. LOL

Everything is cyclical right now. We have great weeks and some just ok weeks. It also depends on what we are doing in our store. We ran a couple months of sales to move some old inventory so sales were very good. We aren’t running a sale right now so things are more normal. We are part time so I am happy to get a few sales every day and a bunch on the weekends. If we do $500-$800 a week, we are doing well for us.

The only conspiracy theory I believe in is that sometimes an old item will sell after you touch it or think about it. Platforms put out what you put into them. If you consistanly list good inventory they you should consistanly sell items.

Having worked retail before this if there is one thing I learned is accurately predicting sales is damn near impossible. The majority of the days the sales the company “expected” us to hit we would be over under or way over. Depending on other people to spend money as way to make money is a volatile market. You have to know what you’re getting into.

Slow weekend for me, but finished up with 4 sales. Hat sales have ground to a halt for me. And it seems like I'm doing good to get $9 or $10 out of a sale. I just don't pick them up now, esp. if they need cleaning. Just not enuf profit margin. Instead I look for shoes I can get $30 or more for. And anything ready to sell, not needing cleaning, prep, whatever. Here's an issue/conspiracy theory to discuss that someone brought up in a Facebook group: why do deleted items reappear, putting us at risk of then getting a sale, forcing a cancellation?

I’ve also found that when I sell an older item, other items in that category suddenly start selling. It triggered something in the algorithm. So sometimes when an odd item sells, I make sure to immediately start listing that type of item if I have any on hand.

I agree that ultimately we have no idea what happens with ebay (other than slow sales when you don't list), but I do know something does happen. I decided to take Dave's advice and stop promoting any of my newly posted items. My sales almost completely stopped for almost 2 weeks. I went from consistently 5-6 sales a day to zero for a couple of days at a time. I despise the whole promotion thing, and I completely understand why folks don't, but I do know that when I stopped it affected my sales greatly (I am NOT blaming Dave for this by the way...lol). Maybe it's because I promoted and stopped (versus not ever starting promoting) that caused it, or maybe it had nothing to do with that at all. But I do know that when I started promoting again my sales went back up. Ultimately we'll probably all keep guessing without knowing the truth. But it definitely makes you think!

only issue I have had is items I have newly list are sometimes not searchable for 2 days. Seems to happen more but sometimes then are searchable within a few hours. Seems strange

It’s not just eBay as far as consistent sales. I was an office manager for a small business and one of the parts of the business was a small retail store. Knowing the area and when the customers come in you can usually see in your records that you should make money and that it’s a blip. I was right 95% of the time but the owners would go down the rabbit hole of why that particular day they had slow sales. I am even in darkest hour a light at the end of the tunnel person and I think you need that when doing anything business wise. If you build it slowly you see that. If you get lucky and it blows up and you have the instant boost when you come back down to earth it can hurt. I had a bit of a conspiracy mindset when I was younger but as I have aged I figured out people are too lazy to put that much effort into pretty much anything. I do think sometimes when similar items that are listed for a bit start selling is friend groups or people in like fb groups that at least in my case collect from a director or a movie distribution company. I have had an entire inventory of items go in hours and all shipped within a 100 miles or so of each other. I think eBay controls a lot but so many other eyes are looking at your items and that can be unpredictable.

Ebay will throttle sellers that do not respond to buyers messages and issues. Sellers with high return rates etc.. They make no secrete to this. Ship same day, respond to messages same day (Mon-Fri) describe correctly. Sellers that have 2-3 days ship times they are just not going to have same level of success.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist by any means, )and am also a former teacher,) but I swear ebay does something. How can I sell 20 items one day, and then 2 the next? This past weekend was horrendous for me, so I put everything on 5% promoted, put a bunch of older items on 50% off, which I never do, sent out hundreds of offers, only to watchers, and when I went to search some of my items, they were dead last in search. I had several good days last week, and it seems when that happens, my items go to the bottom, and sometimes I literally can't find them at all. I am a TRS with 99.9% FB, offer 30 day returns, (not free returns though) and do expect better placement than I am receiving. I have no answer but this is not the ebay of 20 years ago where we listed items and everyone had a fair shot at their items being seen.

Ebay does hide items at times. When I list an item on my account, I check on it with my gfs account. Sometimes items won't show up for 3-4 days. It's not on any particular type of item either, it happens with many categories.

I really don't like to believe in any of the eBay conspiracy theories but the last 5 or 6 days seem so suspicious. Basically Thursday, Friday and Saturday till noon Combined with Sunday night at 8 through tonight at 7.......4 sales........terribly slow......but Saturday at noon through Sunday at 7 PM......12 sales.

maybe you don't feel the effect of the dips because you get viewer sales that pad the luls but it is 100% real, there was people that consistently do triple digits daily that for over a week had multiple 0 sales days and double digit sales days. ebay has way more control over the sales you get than you think. they can trigger sales up to a certain dollar amount and then severely limit your reach and move on to another store, or change the type of buyers your getting with your impressions, they collect tons of data on buyers and they know who buys what and when and everything. they can absolutely get you sales or shut off the valve, to think otherwise and that its just some every man for himself may the best man win environment is just naive. all these tech companies do this.

They are definitely doing something with their algorithm and your listings, plenty of evidence out there, what that is, who knows. People say why would they throttle your sales as they make money from your sales. The big theory is they do this to get you desperate enough to keep upping your promoted listing percentages which is where they are making bank the past few quarters. They have made billions off promoted listings and the only reason they have increased revenues the past few quarters by bleeding sellers with these crazy high promoted listing percentages. The only thing I can see to combat this is to get the best quality high sell through rate items you can find. The days of everything selling are over.

Hey Kevin, just curious, how longer do you think you were picking before you felt you could just buy at garage sales, etc without looking everything up? Just curious…I have been on eBay and set my schedule for consistency in sourcing but focused on just the learning curve now so always wondered. Thanks

I was buying at garage sales long before smart phones were in everybodys hand. That being said. I still often look things up at sales. If you don't know and have the ability to find out before you buy I think it is a good idea to look.

I understand that 95% of my eBay problems are due to lack of desirable inventory. However when a random view count resets to zero for no reason and the search has to be refined 8 times to find anything it does lend credence to some theories. All accessable eBay stats are anecdotal because we are not allowed to see real and relevant data. And one out of 20 sales may have glitches, but we hear only about the problems.

Also...🙄 Cyclical sales are primarily based on cyclical income, the days and weeks when people have discretionary income. Tax return season, student loan dispersal season are good to have on your calendar besides holidays and Fridays.

I assumed that I could send offers on items that have new watchers, but I can't send offers on items that have the same watchers that I already sent offers to at a previous time.
