@@harridan. I said Few moments sir... I have many times, and he demonstrates my point. Listened to Beethoven's works literally thousands of times. Yes, I am old :-) What is so strange and great about him is that he was deaf for almost half his life. Cannot even comprehend that fact. The LEGEND that is Ludwig could not even hear his greatest creations. He wrote his 9th Symphony right before his death and while almost completely deaf. Again, arguably unbelievable... One of the greatest composers to ever exist!
@@gruntyboy i think perhaps he couldn't have composed the 9th at all had he not become deaf and was then forced to be alone in his own head with his incalculable genius; quite simply to the exclusion of all else. Every comprehensive review of the 9th that i have ever read states that at some point we are removed from our bodies and are propelled toward the stars... i always thought Bernstein conducted the 9th too fast, typical allegro Bernstein, and then i saw him conduct it when the Berlin Wall fell, and his conducting was moderated, warm and heartfelt....The Freedom Concert is easy to find free on you tube, best i have ever heard. His expressions are priceless, his joy infectious, and his addition of a children's chorus was genius. He died not long after that performance. My best friend, who is not a musician (i am) told me years ago that the 9th is the single most perfect piece of music ever written. i listened to it over 50 times and i agreed. Then i polled our local symphony orchestra and most of the musicians agreed. The 9th is special for many reasons, though those reasons may differ to each of us. i suggest you look up harridan before you call me sir again.
Renée Fleming sings the most beautiful interpretation of the aria "Ebben? Ne andrò lontana" by Cantilena that I have listened to. Gorgeous voice for this particular Aria. Thanks for your inspiration.
@@artieoliverio4124 The last high note on 'nubi' after 'lontana' of Van Doorn is a terrible mistake: it doesn't exist in the opera of Catalani. It's an absurd choice. Wally has decide of killing herself, she's sad... Van Doorn has turned the aria expressing an intimate drama of a mountain girl into a piece of a superficial musical at Broadway. Horrible, insulting, for me italian.
I first heard this performed by Wilhelmenia Fernandez and I am still partial to her interpretation. That said, this performance is equally as moving and dramatic, and beautifully sung.
OMG is right. That key change right before the orchestral interlude playing what I’ve come to call “the God chord”... just so achingly beautiful that you can’t seem to play it loud enough to fully saturate your soul like you want it to...

is it possible that she may have the music on a screen in front of her on the ground?, because it seems like whenever is is uncertain about words, she looks down on the same spot. nicely sung either way.
@montsyblackmadonna For someone who "doesn't know how to use her voice", she's awfully successful as an opera singer. I'm pretty sure she knows and differentiates between her jazz vocals and her operatic vocals. You should take a listen to her "Haunted Heart" album and then come back and listen to this. Her diction and mannerisms are what set her apart from the rest, and you'd be surprised, but that's actually why some people like to listen to her.
I think her looking down is at a monitor watching the conductor because he's fairly far away and slightly behind her. She can't very well keep turning back to make sure she's with him. So I'd bet money on it she's periodically watching a monitor of the conductor.
@montsyblackmadonna And I'm not a fan of Montserrat Caballe, but do you see me saying she is a terrible singer? She can sing, I just don't care for her voice. Everyone has their opinion, and is entitled to it. Ok?
That breath at the end, so unfortunate. I understand it was added as the ending was held out in this setting, but it destroyed the dramatic beauty of its original ending. (But truly a great singer, and a great performance otherwise.)
@@janetflier6192 Absolutely not, and I have the utmost respect for Renee's technique and artistry. It's just that it break the line by singing "and through the clouds of *breath* gold." It would have been more effective and dramatic to shorten the phrase and sing it all in one breath. Sung this way it seems a little pompous.
@@janetflier6192 he expressed himself very plainly and respectfully, nothing pompous about that. You are just personally triggered that someone criticized someone you like which is a little immature of you to then clap back with that 'no YOU are' tactic. She indeed does these odd breathy things and also gargly inflections for dramatic effect. It distracts from the purity of expression. Its her personal stylistic choice but not everyone is going to like it.
Because she is such an accomplished singer she has mastered that richness that makes one think of a mezzo soprano. She, however, is clearly a soprano as seen by her range, facility, and repertoire that has borne out through the decades. She is 61 years old and still sound absolutely incredible. She is a legend in her own lifetime.
She never conveys Emotions ! Her Expression never shows feelings - there is no REAL involevement , no Devotion. She is cold for my understanding of Music !!!!!
Because Music is for me conveying Emotion, Feelings and through expressivity touch the Hearts of the audiences....otherwise what is it then ???????????? regards :)

@dmpetrick Good Point,I agree. She has a beautiful voice, but doesn't know how to use it.Over half the time she is singing opera, she can't figure out if she is singing opera or jazz. She has weird diction and mannerisms, and makes silly faces and body movements, much of the time.
