Some of the full race pads will break in a little faster as long as there is some friction material already on the rotors. Even in a race you have your siting lap which allows for the opportunity to bed the pads in if a last minute change was made. I would not suggest going hard on a new set of pads straight away if it can be avoided.
@sportbiketrackgear

IMO Brake Pads are a lot like tires. There are several very good tires, all have their own unique qualities and performance characteristics. Personally I enjoy the opportunity to try new tires and brakes. Switching things up a bit is pretty cool.
@2dL
@2dL 11 лет назад
I use stock on my ZX6R track bike and I feel that they don't need to break in. I remember well when I did my first race and I changed the pad because the other one was old and I didn't have time to break in them, and I didn't need too, they were good since first min.

Awesome, thanks for your input. It was my first race, so I didn't know much about things, and I didn't have time to break in softly, I changed at the race and couldn't do shit. What brake pad would you recommend for my ZX6R 2009? I want max brake power and I don't care about longevity.
@TheHortond
@TheHortond Год назад
Just riding the brakes and giving yourself extra stopping distance to do it really helps. Don't hold the brakes until you stop either. Let off before they stop. Do that a few times really starts the brake-in process. Scuffing the roter helps bed the new brake pads.
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear Год назад
When breaking in a new set of brake pads the most important thing is to not overheat the pads before they have been bedded in. There is no issue with bringing the bike to a complete stop while bedding in the pads as long as you are not applying excessive lever pressure before the pads have begun to show some stopping power. While we are racing I will install a new set of pads before a race or a Q session and make sure Max knows to be easy on the pads at pit out and on the sighting lap. After the sighting lap he gets right to business with full breaking. - Van

Awesome review. I'm starting to feel like it's time to step up to intermediate. But I feel my brakes and tires are holding me back. This video was really helpful. EBC - European Brake Company. Made mostly in the UK, or US. Headquarters - UK. It would be interesting to see a British made and US made pad for the same bike. See if there is any difference in performance.

+Eric Terry Outside of them becoming warped and creating a pulsating the brake the only way to really know is by measuring the thickness using a caliper. You can get a decent digital caliper for a pretty low cost!

What would happen if I overheated the organic compound? I ride a 97 zx6r which I don't think came out with sintered pads from the factory. I bought the bike with new SBS Street Excel already installed and I'm experiencing a mild shudder between 80 and 60 km/h. I'm thinking about going back to organic pads but I do brake hard sometimes - by hard I mean I can occasionally smell the pads. I'm willing to sacrifice some of the stopping power for no judder but I'm a bit concerned that overheating organic pads could cause some damage to rotors?

Hi Brian, What's your recommended bed in procedure for both just new pads and new pads with new rotors?
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 6 лет назад
After installing begin with slow speed (parking lot speeds) braking. Do this a couple times until you feel the brakes begin to bite. Now take the bike on the track or street and continue with slow, smooth braking (do not put yourself in a panic stop situation) until you feel the braking power seem to hit a plateau. Once you feel that add a little more speed and brake a little harder. Important you take your time and get this right because you only get one chance. The better you break them in the longer they will last and better they will perform. - Brian Van

I heard the detents on the backing plate made EBC HH pads quieter and I did noticed the EBC HH pads didn't squeal at low speed like my OEM pads did from day1. Do all EBC pads have those little detents on the back?

Sorry, English is not my mother language, so you mean that can you or can you NOT feel the difference between clean or not clean the rotor before change a new pad? And how about change a new different brand of pad? Do I need to clean the rotor? or I just need to brake in the pad, than the material on the rotor will be replaced automatically?

question on the GP pads...will they mate up well with stock OEM rotors your do you recommend upgrading the rotors for use with the GP pads? Track use on a 2003 Kawi 636...
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 4 года назад
They will work fine with the OEM rotors. Not a bad idea to clean the rotors a bit with a scoth brite and a little brake cleaner. From there make sure to take your time breaking them in properly. - Van

I'm about to buy a new R3, and from what I've seen and read it's one weakness is brake feel and grip. I am a complete newb, but I want something w/ nice linear feel so I can learn brake control. Hope to work up to moderately aggressive backroad riding....not track days anytime soon. I put EBC Red street/performance pads on my lightly modded Golf, and it was a huge improvement in feel and bite. Any suggestions?
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 4 года назад
The first thing you should do to improve the brakes on the R3 is to install a set of stainless steel braided brake lines. They are pretty cheap and make a big difference in power and feel. No need to replace the pads until you wear them out. - Van

@Jdmorris143
@Jdmorris143 11 лет назад
i am not saying to do this, but i allow my brakes to "break in" by traveling at a low rate of speed (25 mph) while on the brakes lightly on an empty road. and then i begin to use them hard, again with no vehicles around. i then pick up my speed and apply the brakes. it is indeed a process, but well worth it in the end.

Organic are better for a street bike than a metallic. Heat up faster and work on initial lever grab better. An organic HH pad is what a street bike is looking for. Race bike ON A TRACK, look for a metallic HH pad. And organic rear pads are more progressive so you don't lock the rear as quick. Then use whatever HH on the front.

If you are looking for race only pads I prefer Vesrah RJL pads myself. There are multiple variants on the RJL pads now. If you let me know if you are riding on track or street, the bike you have and the pace you run I can point you in the right direction. - Van

I am looking for a pad suitable for a range of riding from city commuting to spirited weekend riding. I have a Suzuki Bandit 1200S so it's a fairly heavy bike that needs to stop in a hurry but with good lever feel. I always preferred the Vesrahs for racing but once you are spoiled by race level performance from gear you want that on the street too. So looking for race performance but pads that, of course, work in a street appropriate heat range.
