I demonstrate another approach to making a Christmas Tree ornament that involves changing the axis of the tree and cuting Vee grooves with a skew. It is easier than it sounds if you are worried about using a skew.
I upload a new wood turning tip every Tuesday and a wood turning tutorial video each and every Friday so Ya’ll come back, hear?
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases from my Amazon shop www.amazon.com....
You can download demonstration handouts, downloadable copies of articles I have published, and other useful woodturning information available on my website www.mikepeacewo...

Thanks, Gary. I did a demo last night on these at Gwinnet Woodworkers and turned four different styles including one I textured and dyed green.

Just completed 1/2 dozen bells, now to make some trees, but I think I will stay with the single centre. Your design of course :)

This idea is a little more complicated than your previous Christmas tree video from last year. I'm going to try to make one like this. I only have 50mm jaws for my Nova chuck, but I think I can adapt. No steb center either. I think the biggest drawback will be more waste wood. I'll see what happens. I'll use some old Cedar fence post cut-offs, so no big loss if it doesn't work. :-) Thanks to the originator and you for passing this idea on to us.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 6 лет назад
Yep, just turn down from wood large enough to fit your chuck, Gil. Steb center is ideal but as long as the point enters the wood and allows the off axis you should be ok.

I’m really enjoying your videos ad getting a lot out of them. I’m getting fairly comfortable making Christmas trees and mushrooms. Next challenge is a bowl. I would like to get a roughing gouge, parting tool and scraper. Could you recommend the brand and where I could buy them . And a beginners video would help. I’m 83 and wish I could of started this years ago. Thanks.

Thanks. Here i avideo you might find helpful. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EDutGUGDvxY.html I think you know this but I want to be sure - a roughing goue, what is also referred to as a spindle roughing gouge is never used on bowls. Have you considered making your parting tool and scraper? Not sure where you live but if in the USA you can easily buy HSS blanks from Amazon using a link in the show notes. I have videos on making these. If you plan on turning bowls, you need a bowl gouge not a roughing gouge. I prefer an elliptical or parabolic flute and not a Vee shaped flute. Lots of good choices out there made in the North America or Sheffield England.

Thanks for sharing that piece Mike. I always enjoy your videos and the way you teach others what you are doing and how they (me) could do the same. On a piece of wood a little bigger could you cut in other groves shallower and perhaps use different colors on them? God Bless my friend.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 6 лет назад
Thanks for your nice comment, Frank. Different offsets and depth of cut is certainly something to play with. Using a mix of colors, certainly red, might be nice.

Vee cuts are not hard with a skew. You can do it. Practise on scrap in one axis first.

G/day Mike from Downunder a mate of mine got me started on eccentric Christmas Trees a couple of years back when I started I used to put it of centre by making a longer tenon and using Shark jaws then pulling it slightly out of the chuck I would move it 10 mm of centre taking note of the index no on the lathe then cut the groves then do the same with it 180 degrees the opposite way I would only do 2 sides making 1 side red the other side green then I was down at Vermic lathe accessories and Enso the head man showed me his new multi centre screw chuck and I was hooked (Enzo by the way is the brother of the proprietor of Vicmarc Lathes ) there is a few video's of this marvellous chuck if you have time please have a look I think you will be impressed with the ease of use and many features of this chuck thanks for your videos

I am sure it is great option but at $150 USD plus shipping, it not something I would use often enough to justify the cost. For now. But I will keep it mind if I decide I really need an ecdentric chuck.

How fast are you going when you use the skew and how deep?
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 28 дней назад
Speed? I dunno. 1200m-1800 I guess. 1/16" - 1/8" I suppose. Experiment and see what works for you.

I learned a new technique! Yay! Thanks Mike. Question about AAW: I have joined but I find that I seldom give the magazine justice. If I were to "Re-up" to the digital membership, is there a search function that we can use to locate specific topic in previous years' magazines. Say for instance, I wanted to look up the Christmas Trees you showed, would it allow me to go straight to it or do we need to search all years or by years? Thanks for all you do buddy. I know I'm not the only guy who has never unsubscribed to your videos.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 6 лет назад
There is a searchable pdf index of all issues that will point to the right issue and page and then you bring up that issue from the digital archives. For FUNdamentals of Woodturning you can click on the topic tab and see what is available. I rarely go looking through past printed issues since searching digitally and printing an article is so much faster.

Hi Mike, I would like to make a suggestion for a project. My granddoughter loves to put things together and apart, so I thought it would be a good idea to make a figure which consists of several discs. I think it is called „stacker“. I could imagine that there are several ways to make one. How would you turn such a stacker, which in the end can be recognized as a clown or a snowman etc.? Greetings from Germany Heinz P.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 6 лет назад
Heinz, thanks for the suggestion! This is a project in Richard Raffan's book, "Turning Toys" which I just happen to have in my library. I will start scouting for wood and add it to my to do list.

I don't do woodturning, haven't got garage, but would you be interested to sell these on your Amazon page?

I don't want to be a production turner so would not have enough product to justify the hassles of selling on Amazon or Etsy. Thanks for your interest.

IDK why, but using the skew like that at about 14:30 scares the shit out of me... I catch all the time.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning Год назад
You just need to keep cutting with just the bottom 1/3 of the skew so the cut will always be in line with the tool support on the tool rest.
