I really wish the larger Echo had the clock like the Echo Dot. It would be a no brainer, but I feel like I have to either give up great sound for the ability of being more productive with being more aware of time.
Excellent review on these. The Echo Dot and Echo are so very different, I wouldn't look at it as a "one or the other." The Echo Dot is a terrific desk or bedside speaker. The sound is excellent, a notable step up from the Echo Dot 2. The Echo Dot 3 is essentially the same hardware-wise as the Echo Dot 4 (same internal speaker), but the 4 has a slight boost in soundstage with the sphere. The Echo has so much more going on with sound... but it's also so much more expensive. Use the Echo Dot at desk or bedside and the Echo near the TV or where you typically listen to music.
Hey, something that might interest you. A couple of days ago my Amazon account was closed with no warning for after hours of wasted time they're telling me it's for excessive returns which I think is an error but that's beside the point. When they closed my Amazon account all my Amazon devices that I own for years primarily all my Echo devices stopped working. I lost access to the Amazon Photos and Prime Video which I pay for. So apparently the devices you already own are subject to be disabled by Amazon on your perceived shopping habits! I assume the same applies to all other Amazon devices and services like fire OS tablets, Ring cameras, and probably AWS as well. Just wanted to make other people aware of this because they definitely don't tell you this when you buy your hardware and services.
@@Big-Saps It should but if it’s compatible but if it isn’t you could buy the firestick, I think it’s priced around 30$ or already at 20$ if you get the previous gen and it should power on the tv when you tell alexa to turn on the firestick, that’s at least in my case.
I know this is a month old but they already have mounts for the dot and the echo, I have two of each, plus with the dot you can use two command strips.
You can say "Alexy, turn on/off display" and it will go completely off. There are also adaptive lighting settings you can turn on that will dim it with the ambient lighting in the room. Just make sure your dot isn't hidden under a shelf or something as the light sensor won't detect light properly.
Great video! I have 8 echo dots (2nd Gen) in my house and they pretty much control my entire home from lights, to thermostat, garage, etc and I have a love/hate relationship w/Alexa. Is it just me or has Alexa been having the hardest time understanding? I feel Alexa was spot on the first couple years and lately, I often have to call her twice in order for her to answer me or I'll be 3 feet away from her and the Echo 15 feet away or another floor answers me, that happens quite often! I don't have an accent so I don't think that's it, lol. Just wondering if anyone has experienced similar issues with their Echo/Dots?
Same here! I have the 3rd gen and it seems as though voice detection deteriorates over time somehow? I'm suspecting dust getting into the mics but still, it's noticeable
I have several 3rd Gen echo dots and 2nd Gen echo cylinders and I've experienced the same changes in Alexa behavior you described, over the last 3 to 6 months. Definitely has deteriorated. I think the issue is a result of software updates. Hopefully Amazon will address this in future software updates.
There’s also a lot of bad reviews on the 4th generation. Everyone likes the 3rd better and for some reason the black hub comes with a white cord this time???
Amazon's echo dot devices have always been pretty consistent with their performance tbh. alexa is especially fast and reliable because of the mediatek processor it comes with.
this is really upsetting, I’m leaning towards the echo dot simply for the led display it’s convenient. If only the echo had an led display it would be a no brainer, thanks for the review anyway.
Superb review Mike. You have covered all the pros and cons in detail. Keep up the good work. I think I will go with the Echo. The sound is so much better.
The reason Im returning it is that when it connects to bluetooth, it blares out an audio notification, "connected to your macbook" or what ever you're trying to connect. This feature cannot be disabled or even allow the volume to be lowered. Over time has driven me insane, you'll hate it too.
I bought an echo and an echo dot. The Echo is fantastic in terms of sound and it's a no brainer. I got the smaller one for my bedroom, but in the main living room area then I'd say the Echo produces sound that's just as good as my expensive bluetooth JBL speaker. Fantastic value. If you had to choose one then go for the Echo
He is so silly 😂😂😂 , he said if someone breaks into your house and you are looking for something to throw at them use the amazon echo dot like is he for real 😳 😂😂
I have the echo dot 4th gen with clock in the living room and it’s brilliant, great sound quality but I turned off the auto brightness feature and set the display to brightness 6 so my mum can see the time when it’s dark
Just ordered the 4th generation echo. I wanted the premium sound, plus I ordered a few light bulbs as well for different moods in my bedroom. I've already set up part of my echo before it gets here tomorrow. I'm hoping it will find my nest thermostat so I can control the temperature from the echo. It's a Google nest thermostat so I doubt it will work though. Oh well. I have a Google nest show but it won't find the thermostat and the volume isn't exactly loud enough to jam in my bedroom. Will the amazon echo 4th generation have loud enough sound to really pump up the jam in my standard sized bedroom. About 12×14?
@@arunimabhowmik5471 Well that's a good question , I'll do my best to answer it . The blue full size Echo I use in my craft room , the Flex I use in my bathroom for added range of my voice . I have an Echo Show in my living room which works as a smart clock and extends my range , but it appears to do everything that my Full-size Echo does . I also have an Echo Dot in my barn so I can play music or news but again all in all it's out there to extend my wifi range without buying an actual Wifi Extender device (Using the Amazon Sidewalk feature ) . The App on your phone is really the "Brains" of it all . I hope this helps you .
I got a pair of Echo hub models to pair for simulated stereo music and sleep sounds background. I really would like to see the clock added to this model...then I could reduce the number of items on my night stand. Thanks for the video.
Just googled Echo vs Dot and saw this video. I don´t even need to ask because it´s clear: you are Nate O´Brian´s brother. You look the same, dress the same and have the same speech mannerisms.
I like the Echo and got it on sale on a Mother’s Day sale for $30 off. I have a 1st generator Dot I use in my bedroom to control light. I love them both. Going to buy a Glow as a night light on Amazon Prime day in June
Just got the dot with the clock and love it. Does everything my other large echo does but like seeing the clock in the morning and it has become my new alarm clock waking up to music and my news/talk station. And now its only $39
Hi Mike, you can control philips hue with Echo Dot without a hub. You can also do it with the 3rd generation of the echo dot. I have 3rd and 4th gen and they control all my philips hue lighting, and even my TV.
I've upgraded to the echo but also brought the new dot, but I think I'll sent the echo dot back Re the sound, on the website it says only the echo can do in and out sound with the cable.
Hi Mike, I have just bought myself an Echo Dot 4th Gen and wondering can I link up a 4th gen Echo with it for music in another room? Am I correct in thinking that to have 'stereo' they both have to be the same (i.e. 2 echo dots not an echo dot and an echo) Thanks
Great video! I listen to my Echo dot 4th all the time. I even have them all rooms. Well watching your video I'm definitely getting the Echo 4th. I love sound quality and couldn't believe the difference in sound. That's what I want in a speaker. That's one reason I miss my stereo. It only played local stations. The thing I like about Alexa devices is I can listen to my Sirius XM channels as long as I set it up in my app. Thank you for the review. I liked and subscribed! :)
In the Alexa app you can also connect your current echo dot to a Bluetooth speaker for even better sound than the echo 4! Instead of upgrading I just link it to my soundbar when I want a boost
The Microphone is THE NUMBER ONE concern for anyone using these for home automation, which is the only reason these things need to exist. How often can she hear her name? With Echo Dot 3, its around 40% fail rate.
Do these have any significant advantages over the first generation of alexa? Still rocking my first generation of my alexa dot and i have it connedted to a bluetooth speaker. Looking to upgrade but it doesn't seem like there is any changes internally except the sound.
the 4th gen has a better chip so Alexa is more responsive along with the fact that the 4th gen has a directional speaker so it sounds a lot better when you have it pointed in your direction versus the 3rd gen with its 360 sound. It should be a very decent upgrade from the 1st gen but if you want to look into better sound quality just buy from speakers and connect them to your dot and youll have good stereo sound along with smart capabilities still since its attached to Alexa. EDIT: Just read that you already have it connected to a speaker so the biggest upgrade will be the faster chip inside of it and the more responsive/Snappy Alexa.
A guy told me he pays a monthly subscription for Alexa. Is this compulsory or can you just use your home internet and use it for free ? (Apart from internet subscription). Also would it hook up to my laptop wirelessly to use as a laptop speaker for listening to You tube etc.
I have 2 echo dots 4th gen linked to a echo SUB for the bedroom home theatre set up, do you recommend getting another echo SUB for 2 full sized echo 4th gen? or will 2 full size echos 4th gen have enough base that the echo sub wont be necessary?
Which one has a better microphone That is my main reason of buying one other another I'm happy with anything for sound I'm not an audophioe but being better at picking up my voice when music is on at 60% is my main pet peeve so willbuh whatever is best
Loved the ball comment lol I was going to get my first Alexa & fancies the dot with the time displayed but I don’t think the music would be loud enough & that all I think I’d use it for .Cheers from 🇬🇧
I've got an issue with my echo 4th gen. The led light ring is really dark. It's bright when you first turn it on, but then goes dark. It's pissing me off because it's hard to tell when it's heard you! Does anyone know how to fix? I contacted Amazon but they fobbed me off and didn't answer my question at all. Just gave me a standard off the shelf FAQ answer about the echo with clock led.
I really wish there was a clock on the larger echo....I've got two of the smaller dots (4th gen) with clock...and really like them....but the sound is.....well...smaller....lol.
Which one to get. Echo (2020) or echo dot (2020) who lives in an apartment? Can I listen to the dot in the kitchen or living room while playing the echo dot (2020) or Echo (2020) in a bedroom?
