Echo is AWFUL! Marvel Goes Off The Reservation

Echo was designed to literally be the yin to Daredevil's yang. A deaf woman who's heightened sense of sight gives her enhanced powers vs a blind man who's heightened sense of hearing gives him enhanced powers. How were the writers so dumb as to not understand that?

As a native, this is garbage and I promise you, 1% of us are woke. 99% of us have common sense.

Competent writers are the most underrepresented group at Disney today.

That clip at the beginning of Vincent D'onofrio saying he has to work with what he's given is heartbreaking.

As a woman when I watch a superhero movie/series I want to see half naked ripped men doing heroic stuff being competent and strong, I want to see beautiful women in tight costumes being feminine and smart and I want to see relationships between them. You know ... like... what it used to be 🤷‍♀️

Marvel now : This character is a amputee. This is body posivity. Marvel back then : This character is an amputee. His story is unbelievably horrifying and well written. He is saved by his WW2 buddy who almost died after their violent fight.

I am fluent in ASL and worked with deaf people for a number of years. True Deaf culture is one of the most toxic, victim enabling cultures I have ever seen. It fits perfectly with Disney's identity politics. This is a truly pathetic and sad show.

After 2018’s Black Panther movie there has been this noticeable push to “check boxes” as they said. Marvel treats DEI characters like Oprah giving away cars in 2004. Are you Asian? Well, you’re getting Shang-Chi. Are you Indian? Here, you get Ms. Marvel. Are you gay? You get the Eternals and America Chavez' two moms. Are you black? You get Falcon-America! Native American? You get Echo! Great, everyone is now represented! Yippie!

Her original power could easily be made to take time to learn and progress with. Actually, it could've been very cool to see in the hands of a good writer.

I have several Native friends and I explained the show and Echo's power to them and they were embarrassed and insulted. So yeah, Marvel fucked this one up majorly.

I love the fact that Marvel is trying so hard to pretend that they didn't have an amputee in the Marvel Universe years ago. I guess Bucky was a ghost.

If we reimagine Echo, why not make her be someone struggling with boredom and frustration because? Her "copy" ability would make her awesome at all kinds of things, but she never has to put effort in so she never feels accomplished.

If she has healing powers, why can't she heal her hearing? Probably already thinking about this with more effort than anyone involved in the production.

I never realised until now that my ability to hear without impairment was a privilege. Dear Lord give me strength.

Picture this: Netflix's Daredevil being a monumental success without 1) Charlie Cox not actually being blind and, 2) having blind representation being impossible since blind people can't see themselves in Daredevil

I worked with the deaf in Asia and do US sign language. I had to remind deaf people they live in a hearing world. They had to adjust themselves to fit in and not the world cater to them. I’m glad to see a movie with deaf people in it.

Those people don't understand we don't care about representation. We just care about good stories. Do Mexicans feel represented by Goku? No. but they love that character more than anything. Did women identify with Fabio? No. But they love that guy so much they buy all his novels. Kids with Stanley Cups. Do they feel represented by Stanley Cups? No. But if they don't have one they will be bullied in school. No one cares about representation. No one. Disney should be more worried about how to replicate the Stanley Cup success and force parents to buy 40 to 80 USD cups for their kids. And representation will not do that.

Well, they made a TV show for 10,000 people of which only 1000 of them watch it and that’s what happens when you’re focused on representing everyone. You kind of forget that most of the people who are watching them aren’t what you’re giving them.

I sat stone-faced for 4 episodes. But when Maya went full Captain Planet in episode 5, I started laughing and couldn't stop for minutes. God, I love the M-She-U. It's like watching a mentally challenged kid try to build a LEGO house. It's somehow incredibly endearing.

After seeing windows smashed in daily throughout LA and SF, you'd think the writers would know what a broken window actually looks like. Unless they are saying tribal Americans are too dumb to know the difference and somehow managed to custom fit housing window glass for all their car windows.

The Navajo showrunner (and director that changed Echo's power set) could not be bothered to represent the Choctaw tribe accurately, while claiming representation is the most important thing about this disaster.
