ECHO LAKES TRAIL 💦⛰️🌲Hiking the Sierra Nevadas - Episode 2
Nestled amid the towering granite peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, the Echo Lakes consist of two pristine glacial pools. Located at a breathtaking (really) elevation of 7,414 feet within the serene El Dorado National Forest, both the Upper and Lower Lakes offer idyllic alpine landscapes straight out of a postcard. You will start this hike out from the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT) at the end of the Echo Lakes Road. You will hike past the Water Taxi pier, before climbing up to the Echo Lakes scenic overlook.
As you wander along the shoreline cliffs, you will weave through mixed pine forests and wildflower meadows. Underneath your feet will be a rocky, but stable terrain. The path will climb to an overlook beneath Flagpole Peak. Look to the south of the lake, and you will see the sights of Becker Peak and Talking Mountain.
Now traveling over to Upper Echo Lake, you will get several awesome views of the encompassing Sierra Nevada Peaks. However, a good view of Upper Echo Lake will be hard to find. You will be able to spot it through the trees. You will also navigate a series of switchbacks in the shade, which serve as a nice reprieve from hiking in that California sun.
At the end of the trail, you will find a pier and a mini cabin. You can take a swim, call a water taxi, or take the route back from which you came.
