[S10 E48] Working Class Power
On this week's show, Prof. Wolff discusses Biden's 'new economic team,' big US banks falling short in key stress tests, India's 250-million-strong general strike, and lastly, huge chunk of US relief funds aimed at small and medium businesses grabbed instead by big business. The second half of the show features an interview with Flight Attendants Union President Sara Nelson.
Read the full episode transcript: www.democracya...
Sara Nelson is the International President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO. She played a key role in helping to end the government shutdown in 2019, and she worked closely with Chairman Peter DeFazio to secure federal payroll grants to keep aviation workers employed and connected to healthcare during the coronavirus pandemic while banning stock buybacks and capping executive compensation. Sara became a union Flight Attendant at United Airlines in 1996, but the events of 9/11 and the economic pain that followed informed her calling to fight for worker safety, secure jobs with good wages and benefits. Sara has led major campaigns to ban knives on planes, increase Flight Attendant federal rest requirements, fight on-board sexual harassment and assault, create mandatory training for Flight Attendants to recognize and report human trafficking and much more.

Most of what is been done is the same old same old. It isn't just telling truths it is the active input and political awareness and pressure we can do in the practical, in the activism of what is said that can be revolutionary. We are barely doing something not yet consequential enough. Prfr. Wolff points out the unions are not taking a position of leadership that they are called and supposed to do. That would truly be consequential and revolutionary.

The STATUS is just QUO. Zeros making no changes. UNDER CAPITALISM, EVERY PENNY OF A BILLIONAIRES FORTUNE IS A PENNY OF UNPAID WORK THAT SOMEONE ELSE PERFORMED. Capitalism is based on freedom ? Capitalism is based on on money and failure Wealth is fueled by debt, and debt grows faster than the economy. When I have asked a few simple questions of the investor types, not a single one will answer my questions. This leads me to believe that A) they never even looked at how capital gains are generated, or B) these investor types are perfectly willing to siphon off the wealth of the bottom 90% or get bailed out by the U.S. Treasury in order to get capital gains. Either way, capitalism is not the great freedom giver and poverty annihilator that the propaganda makes it out to be. Here is how I addressed my unanswered questions to investor types: For those of you who are commenting one way or another on the merits of investing, I would like to ask a question or two. When the sum total of financial assets ( "investments" ) in the USA top $90 trillion and the economy as measured by GDP is around $21.5 trillion, how do "investments" make 6 to 7 percent while the GDP only grows by 2.56% annually? With wealth being larger and growing faster than the economy, how does the economy pay off the dividends wealth earns?

Democrat Joe Biden reads from a teleprompter as long as it moves at the correct speed for him at that moment, he sometimes sounds okay - a bit robotic, totally scripted, but okay. Trying to recite from memory or engage in a logical train of thought on his own, though, democrat Joe Biden often falls into the word salad, argy-bargy. It’s awful listening to him trying to claw his way from there into rationality. Is there a real Joe Biden somewhere in between? Clearly, when he’s speaking from the heart, with passion, with anger, he speaks from his core self where he truly lives. That’s when and from where we get “hey, fat,” “dog-faced,” “are you a junkie,” and “you ain’t black.” Honest words, completely in character for democrat Joe Biden. Some might be inclined to chalk these recent comments up to the stress of the campaign or to his obviously increasing dementia. It was no mistake, though, in 1988 when he used a black criminal to get a few laughs as he joked he might be mistaken for Willie Horton’s attorney. Now imagine him as President in normal times. Chairing the National Security Council, hosting White House dinners, meeting privately with dozens of world leaders during the UN General Assembly, guiding overall military, financial, and foreign policy for the country, and talking and talking and talking, off the cuff and from the heart. Makes your democrat shoulders hunch up and your democrat soul just cringe, doesn’t it?

We 5500 FAs with United airlines were let off without any real compromise. Our friends at other airlines got so many benefits before they were sent on furlough. In our case, nothing. We pay for our own insurance if we wanna keep it, our travel benefits are about to expire, in our last check they toke hundreds or $ that was supposed to be deducted from our checks in a year or so... In general, she sold her soul to get up there, and the victims are working people in their most vulnerable moment.

Exactly, we have to stop negotiating with these entities as if they have a "conscience". No negotiations. The aid packages have to be structured to explicitly ban, and also criminalize, profit-taking. Because if you turn on CNBC for any length of time, you will hear them talk about how best to profit from any relief bills. That's literally the only thing that they do, profit. In their minds, anything else, is inefficient, wasteful, quasi-criminal even. If we don't fight against this mindset, it will hollow out any attempt to bring relief. I'm pessimistic that we will be able to do that.

The American oligarchs' primary concerns are money and power, the two obviously being inextricably tied. Because they have the political system bought and paid for, it's impossible to directly attack their power, so you have to attack their source of power - money. Why have they spent the last century or so systemically destroying unions? Why do they exert so much effort towards creating social conflict - straights vrs gays, black vrs white, blue collar vrs white collar, rural vrs urban, immigrant vrs domestic, etc, etc, etc? It's a class war and they do everything possible to convince you it's not. And they'll never give anything until they're forced to. Successfully disrupt their commercial efforts and you win. A general strike is the answer - not for a few hours or a few days, but until they give the majority a fair share of what the majority produces.

The general working conditions of most Americans in the 1930's were worse than the general working conditions today. Today there is a big percentage of workers with great working conditions as compared to the 1930's. This will make it difficult to create a large base to make progressive changes.

The brilliance of the NLRA from the ruling class perspective is that it shifted fights from the streets and the shop floor, where workers are strong, to the courts, and to the federal bureaucracy, where the moneyed classes have the clout. We need to put the fight back onto the streets.

...and there it is again. A massive unionization of working class interests during the 30's that changed the course for the middle class from that moment on. Nobody seems to be able to launch this kind of movement presently because there is way to much divisiveness and confusion and unwillingness to take a new approach.

This is why my coworkers in Southern State hate Unions. We don't get any health insurance, no vacation, no overtime pay, not even paid Christmas Day. People here feel that Union workers are overpaid, spoiled and are getting special treatment already. I understand that unions are looking to help their members, but unless they figure out more inclusive language, my coworkers would not join any general strike and would never support Unions. They would rather wait for Trump to come back

To me, the term Human Resources became normalized as the union movement came under unrelenting attack during the 80s and 90s. And it occurred as the management groups - the owners - wanted to diminish the idea that they were responsible for people's lives, in favour of the idea that the only thing that matters is the bottom line. And that requires changing the value system away from the person, and toward the thing. In fact, the term "person" disappeared along with the demise of the term Personnel Department, to be replaced by the aforesaid Human Resources Department. The shift was subtle. After all, what could possibly be impersonal about "human", and the answer lies in what also replaced the idea of person. That word Resource says it all. It turned the human into a disposable item, to be exploited and discarded as management saw fit, to keep a bottom line in the black. A Human Resources Department promises that everyone in the organization can really become something. A Personnel Department delivers the massage that everyone is already someone.

If the unions raises wages to a "comfortable" rate, who is going to pay for the higher prices? Just other consumers. If we are going to get the money to do that from the rich, we would need an income tax on them. People are not ready for socialism even it would be to the benefit to the working class.

So let's just sit on our hands and take what they give at lower class expense? Reagan started this baloney 40 years ago and now if you aren't ready for socialism the same bunch of dorks will let you eat cake until you drop dead from exhaustion! The working class is not the bottom 40, 50 or even 80%- it's more like 90 t0 95% that collect a paycheck with deductions for SSI, withholding and wage taxes and that's who's getting screwed, I don't care if you are making 300 or 400k/year. It's a sick joke, really.

Highly qualified aviation mechanics, engineers, pilots, flight attendants, air traffic controllers, and people who can pass a drug test cannot be easily replaced like a typical McDonalds burger flipper. Aviation is an extremely unique industry to work in and unlike most others. Workers in aviation have quite a bit of influence over what goes on. You gotta' choke out these managers with "NO" until they suffocate and finally 'get it.'

The Biggest problem of the USA lies in its political terminology. In a country where the major factions are called "Republicans" and "Democrats"; you would be an absolute fool not to realise that economics essentially matter more than democracy. The labels "Labour", "Liberals", "Nationals" and "Greens" that are used in the political landscape of other Developed nations (UK, Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, Holland, etc.) make much more sense. They give clarity to voters so that they know where they stand and what policies they can support over time. In the USA, people (whether apprentices, workers, employees or retirees) are never factored in the political landscape. This is because the country has adopted the governance model of profit-driven Corporations: The very fews make the decisions for the majority, with ZERO CONSULTATION whatsoever. Is it any wonder that workers Unions are non-existent, forever weak and debilitated? That said, the moment people realise that their greatest strength lies in banding together, there will be a once-in-a-lifetime defining moment for US politics. Don't ask for the power, GRAB it. All is well.

Wolff asks Sara Nelson if she sees the same amount of activism and willingness to stand up in other areas of labor. I am an ex organizer and currently work for a labor union that is relatively high profile. My union supported Hillary in 2016 (without a rank and file vote). We did not support Bernie in 2020, either. Labor is a joke. Sara Nelson answered that the young generation in labor are aware and not afraid. She's right, but that isn't an answer to Wolff's question. Young people in general, union or not, are aware and strong. Union leadership across the country has to be purged. Thrown out on their asses. They are corrupt and dirty. Socialists and communists once again have to rise and take control.

In Germany, there’s a more or less left wing outlet - Telepolis - that had the resources to actually investigate that India story. They had someone there and he has a network of people all over the country that he can ask. Result: the numbers were nowhere near 200 mio. That number had been put out ahead of time by the organizers and they then just kept running with that. And the last few years it was just like that too. True, there was mass protest, but for the Indian population it was vanishingly small. The article went on to explain why it’s still significant: if you get even a small fraction of the population of such a poor country to be in the streets, that really is something. So there’s no need to copy-paste some clumsy propaganda.

I am from India, and I don't know who wrote those "protest demands list" for you but quite a few things are wrong, and I don't know of any leader or really anyone blaming or even talking about Muslims in this entire thing so that too. The farmers bill is to allow the farmers to sell their produce outside of the designated market, which for now is the only place those famers can sell their produce by law, this system was constructed to help the farmers but it is largely hurting them nowadays as the buyers(these buyers are given licence from the government and only these guys have the right to buy from the farmers) in those farmers market often collaborate under the table to not offer the farmers a single rupee more than what all of these buyers have decided(which is very low of course, and I mean very low, like sometimes if farmer doesn't want to sell at that price the best option he has is to just dump all of the produce as taking it all back to the village would cost more), the new bill is so that all of this doesn't happen, farmer can sell to anyone no need for licencing. A large chunk of this protest is built on misinformation, and just the anger that absolute desperate conditions that these farmers endure. Also some anti-india, and jihadist(maybe this is where the whole Muslim involvement thing is coming from) organizations are also reported to have been performing their deeds in the name of protests, like just today hundreds of mobile tower were destroyed to block communication in the Punjab state, so yeah it's not as black and white as it is potrayed. I respect you Dr.Wolff, I myself am a socialist, but a lot of things are wrong in your analysis on this particular topic maybe because the main sources were English media which is famously/infamously very biased against modi government.

Why doesn't the Labor Movement call for jobs programs like FDR had? Because many in the labor unions' leadership are oriented to the capitalist (un)Democratic Party, and hostile to anything socialist. This is continuing fallout from the McCarthy period when Socialists and Communists were driven out of the Labor Movement. Even when FDR installed the public works programs, it was to "save capitalism", as he accurately bragged. We needed, and need today, such programs, but we won't get them unless we credibly threaten them with a socialist revolution, as was done in the 1930's. FDR's economic advisor, Adolph Berle, said "we may have anything on our hands from a recovery to a revolution. The chance is about even either way." They were scared. Huey Long phoned a RETICENT FDR, saying FDR would clinch the nomination if he embraced the Bonus Marchers, the veterans of WWI who were still waiting for money they were promised, while dealing with a crashed economy. FDR: "I'm afraid I cannot do that because I am not in favor of a bonus." (!) Before Huey Long hung up, he told FDR he was "a gone goose". FDR's staff realized that "the Kingfish" was right, and wrote a speech for Roosevelt that didn't openly endorse the demands of the Bonus Marchers or other people hit by the Depression, but promised vaguely "a new deal for the American people". ( from Lance Selfa's book "The Democrats: A Critical History") FDR bragged that he "saved capitalism". Thanks, FDR for nearly another century of wars, unemployment, repression, and now the threat of extinction.
