Baron Yoshimoto(I have the one volume translated from him in English) and Monkey Punch mixed with marvel comics wow, what a package! The one really crude one might be Takashi Nemoto, who was a Garo artist who had one volume published like a decade ago by picture box.

More info about manga shown in this video- the cover story from one of the volumes shown of the indie woman mangaka (named Miki Yamamoto)has been scanlated -"Sunny Sunny Ann" and it's pretty good. The mangaka of the wild looking Metal K, Kouji Maki, has a one volume autobiographical mange called Cancelled that is a memoir of his time working at shonen jump in the 80s that has also been scanlated.

Awesome vid. Have plenty of stuff to track down and read now! I have some recs for sure. Lampo The Hypersonic Boy and Mitsuyoshi by Tetsuo Ueyama. He was one of author of one of the early 90s Viz books, Metal Guardian Faust. His work just got 100x more amazing since that book and it's insane no one has translated his other stuff yet. Another is Agnes Kamen/Inoki Kamen by Hiromatsu Minoru. It's a wrestling manga that is loosely based off AJPW/NJPW rivialry. So it's got expys of a bunch of real life wrestlers. Even The Rock shows up in one of the later volumes. The artist has a kinda Joe Mad/Capcom Design team kinda art style. Best wrestling action I've seen in a comic until Do A Powerbomb came out. Finally, Beast of East is the newest manga series from Akihiro Yamada, the guy who drew that Record of Loddoss War book. It's really cool because he takes that european influence and combines it with a sumi ink/classical Japanese artstyle.

The "Superman" rip, I believe, was actually titled "Rocketman" with no reason at all for S on the chest. They were done for those cheapy manga rental stores in the 50s that traded in dedicated material, so definitely weren't licensed.

Those two POPcorn magazines have episodes of Wakusei Garaga ('Planet Garaga') by Satomi Mikuriya; an amazing artist that is somewhat close to a lot of western artist; which fits in that magazine. I recommend it, definitely worth a closer look.

Male delinquents are bancho and female are sukeban, if I remember correctly. Sukeban Deka is a great manga/live action show about a delinquent girl who fights crime with a yo-yo, btw.

they had an exhibition of urasawa's work in london he was there and did a talk and signing. my friend went and said it was awesome urasawa even played guitar for people XD. they kept the exhibit up for a month or so after so i went down and saw the work incredible to see his originals. the yawara ones where some of my faves. i think yawara is actually an old word for ju jitsu in japanese ? i could be wrong tho

I just bought a bunch of stuff from Japan and i'd recommend hunting down most of it (I got a bunch of Dragon Ball, Dr. Slump and those new reprints of old Otomo stuff. Fantastic but not exactly obscure or hard to track down.) 1. Sunabouzu by Masatoshi Usune (anime released in the west as Desert Punk) Really fantastic post-apocalyptic series published by Beam that wrapped up a year or two ago. Great Otomo inspired art with real attention to detail on the weapons. Also interesting in that the protagonist is such an unapologetic, evil prick. You can read it online. The author also made this cool alien/body horror manga called 'EATER' you might want to look into. 2. Bakune Young by Toyokazu Matsunaga I'm sure you guys remember this being published in Viz's pulp magazine. Insane art and story. The Japanese collection is very nice and a hell of a lot cheaper than shelling out a few hundred dollars for the out of print english versions on ebay. 3. Castle of the dragon (aka Ryuguden) by Toyokazu Matsunaga Really great 3 volume series by Matsunaga that can be read online. Kind of a twisted, dark fairy tale with sci-fi elements. Matsunaga opted for more of a sparse look in this than he did with Bakune but don't let that dissuade you from checking it out because it still looks fantastic. 4.Odd jobs-Art Works Of Atsushi Kaneko. Kaneko of Bambi fame's artbook. Great stuff. 5. Keita Amemiya Ganapa No Te book. Something like a kids activity book with famous tokusatsu director Keita Amemiya's amazing artwork and small comics in it. Amemiya draws some of the best creatures and monsters i've ever seen. 6. IBC (Ink Bottle Comics) 1&2 by HIroyuki Imaishi Imaishi is one of the biggest directors/animators in anime of the last few decades and these books are a collection of his pre anime work in manga. If you're a fan of his work then you'll get a real kick out of seeing some of the ideas/ action sequences he'd obviously been sitting on for a while before taking them into animation like Dead Leaves and Gurren Lagann. Very cartoony and dynamic stuff. 7. Yokai by Shigeru Mizuki Coloured artbook by Mizuki. Need i say more? 8. The Memory of Memories. Production art of the Otomo directed Memories anthology movie. 9. Katsuhiro Otomo WARNING! Character of Genma Taisen Otomo's Production art from the forgotten (and underrated imo) rintaro directed Genma Taisen movie. Sadly a page has fallen out of my copy but thats shopping second hand i guess. 10. The Fishbone by Akira Ooyama Ed, you absolutely have to track this down when you're over there. One of the most bizarre manga i've ever flicked through. One volume, published by Beam and it has amazing artwork. James Stokoe has cited this as his favourite manga and a big influence on his Orc Stain series (a lot of genital mutilation in both).

Funny, I was thinking of Andi Watson yesterday and thought "have they covered any Watson stuff" and hell, he gets a mention today, lol. I looked him up and looks like he is putting out mini-comics on the regular and writing YA graphic novels to pay the bills. Loved Skeleton Key and Geisha back in the day. Thanks, dudes, as always, a pleasure to see what you are into.

Did Cartoonist Kayfabe ever do a piece on Yasushi Nirasawa's Phantom Core. If you don't already have it, it would be a good one to look for while you are in Japan. When I look at Phantom Core it reminds me of Eric Talbot. It feels like something that he may have been into.
