Eddie and Alex Van Halen jam with Kenny Chesney in 2006.

Here is some video I shot back in 2006. I was working for Carrie Underwood and we were touring with Kenny Chesney all summer. At the L.A. show, Eddie and Alex came out to jam with Kenny and his band. I shot this with a little point-and-shoot camera so the video and audio quality is not great, but I'm glad I documented the moment. After the live footage, I talk a bit about that day and about meeting Eddie. Hope you enjoy it!

The thing I notice most about Eddie is that he was ALWAYS SMILING when he played. Like he is even amazed at his talent

I agree. Most lead guitarists use the “I’m in pain” face. His signature look was “OMG look at what my fingers are doing”.

My wife and I were just walking out , heard Eddies riff, my wife knows I’m a VH freak, she looks at me , we immediately grabbed a seat and bam, what a great 30-40 minutes. WE WERE THERE. Dierks Bentley Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney, and Eddie, and Alex. What a night. Unforgettable to be sure.

I still cant grasp the sad, sad reality that the greatest guitar player I've ever heard play rock music is gone. I still cry when I think about it and the fact that the world I must go on living in will not have him or his band in it. What a fucked up world it is indeed! Nothing will ever be the same and music one of it's most talented heroes not only for me but for a whole generation that loved the man and his music! Thanks for the music and all the good times and great memories Eddie. RIP EVH!!!

Definitely sad. But Eddie really overall since 2000 or so has not been that healthy all around. Yes he built amps and guitars, two tours with Dave. He mainly played great, but at times some of the demons returned( not the cancers). I had a friend who went to a NAMM show around 2000? and Eddie was getting around with a cane. So many lapses perhaps in touring or recording were compromised by health problems. Eddie was not enjoying early retirement, he liked to be active and productive.

This was a bad time for Eddie, but even at his worst, he was better than most. I’m so glad that he eventually got clean and got to spend some good time with Wolfgang and his family. I don’t think I’ll ever get over him being gone just as a fan. Like so many, he was the reason I stepped my game up as a player. I was playing Cream, Zeppelin, and Humble Pie when he arrived on the scene in 1978. I seriously had to rethink my whole life after hearing him, he set the bar so high you couldn’t see it. R.I.P. Eddie you’ll forever be the GOAT in my book. 🙏🎸

Agreed. He was so incredibly baked in this performance, yet... he STILL did an amazing job. I think so many of us musicians struggle with such vices, and I'm glad he got sober after this and stayed that way until he passed. I'll miss him forever. He was an amazing natural musician and one of my heroes. Definitely the Greatest Of All Time.

I went backstage, to soundcheck and sat front row in 2004 Atlanta. Eddie stopped after soundcheck and sat down and talked for probably 15 minutes. He was really wasted on wine and who knows what else. Heavy smoking. Had a monster custom wine jug that his assistant Matt would keep setting down beside him. But, so nice. Alex was so nervous that Ed might say or do something crazy. Alex would monitor over Eddie and Eddie knew it. Eddie would purposely make Alex nervous with teases of potential saying or doing something crazy. Alex was so worried that he couldn’t concentrate on working out issues with his drum tech. Eddie had been recently sunburned. They had just toured Florida before Atlanta show. Atlanta was suffering monster rain from a Florida hurricane. Eddie was in a wife beater at the soundcheck. He kept tugging the front of the wife beater fluffing out his. Sunburnt peeling dry skin. A few times he dusted off his forearms and the dead skin flew all over everyone around him. He laughed. It was weird and no one wanted to be dusted but, he didn’t mean it in a bad way. He was being comedic. The guy was severely sunburned. He would ask me and everyone around me more questions about ourselves than we could ever attempt to ask him. Interesting. He was tired of talking about himself and wanted to hear stories about my day or normal stuff. Oddly nice. It was scary loud. Later at the show, he was so so high or drunk. But, somehow he managed to hold it together. It seems as though he could play one handed with no picking. He just pressed the notes with his left fretboard hands. It was like autopilot. I was amazed at the strength of his wrists. He could juggle the cigarette in between everything. Sammy signed my ballcap at the end of the show during the last song. The camera caught it and all my friend sitting other places in the arena were excited to see me on camera. I have to say, I was shocked at how scary loud the show was in front row. So loud in fact that Eddie’s guitar drowned out the rest of the band. It really made the band as a whole impossible to hear. I’m a rock drummer so I am used to loud music. I was noise drunk for days after the concert. I was so sick from ear and vertigo issues that I missed my friends wedding. It was THAT loud. What an amazing experience. I’m a VH fan. I’ve been to Cabo. Been to Eddie and Vals Malibu beach house. Been to the driveway of Eddie’s Hollywood hill mansion and 5150 studio. What a monster pad. It’s safe to assume Eddie was never broke. Eddie was my #1 music hero. I’m also saddened to lose my other hero in 2020. Neil Peart. It has been one of the worst years ever. RIP EVH!!!!!

Interestingly enough this sounds close to Jimmy Page on Zep’s 77’ tour. Chainsmoking( check, Eddie too), very likely Coke involved( but Eddie not as bad as Page)copious alcohol intake( but not Eddie’s bottomless booze intake). But Eddie was always playing, so even the huge alcohol( maybe coke) intake typically caused minor problems, whereas Jimmy obviously was not rigorously practicing much. Thank god Eddie never got into Heroin. I had a friend who saw Eddie three times with Roth, twice excellent but one time Eddie smashed up his guitar !! My friend said either the guitar wasn’t staying in tune or Eddie was not playing well.( a rarity). Unlike Page, Eddie ( I saw him 5 times with Roth, once with Sammy) never played a weak or sloppy show when I saw him. But 1990 was the last time. One of the top three rock guitarists ever( can’t make up my mind).
