Eddie Howe: "No surprise" Sandro Tonali was charged by FA, "don't know" if ban will be extended

Eddie Howe has urged the Football Association not to hand out further punishment to Sandro Tonali after the Newcastle midfielder was charged with alleged breaches of its betting rules.
Tonali is alleged to have breached an FA rule 50 times by betting on matches between August 12, 2023 and October 12, 2023. The 23-year-old has until April 5 to respond.
Tonali was signed by Newcastle for £55m last summer from AC Milan but in October he was hit with a ban for betting on matches while with Milan.
It is Sky Sports News' understanding that Newcastle do not expect these new charges to delay Tonali's return to playing in August 2024 or his ability to train.
Howe also comments on defender Sven Botman, who has had an operation on his knee and will be out for up to nine months.

Tonali has been getting treatment for basically the same time period. It could be detrimental to further punish or derail the treatment plan the Italian FA already put in place. Anything the FA does should be supportive. Perhaps continued support and observation after the suspension. Help the kid get his life and career back on track. That should be the priority.

@@twiggy99 NOT IN THE REAL WORLD. There's no way that this could have been found out without someone who knew about it telling Newcastle. The Italian investigators had no evidence until Fagioli told them about the app that connects to the illegal (i.e. underground) betting platform. It's not the same as Tonali using Ladbrokes etc.

@@ethans3672 as Ashworth himself said, they need to look into their own internal investigation and internal processes. They didn't have a robust enough process in place as they have admitted too. As the papers have said it was known in Italy by the media and they have hinted AC Milan also knew which is why they sold one of their prized young assets when they did

@@twiggy99 it’s true they admitted the process should be improved but I struggle to see how we could have found it out if firstly his own family didn’t know about it and secondly the whole scandal was only found out by a leak after his transfer. Howe did a press conference today and said the same thing. It was unlucky the club will work hard to avoid it again but there was no way to find out

Those who think that Newcastle could have avoided this by so-called "due diligence" seem to be unable to say exactly how this could have been done. The reality is that without someone telling Newcastle, in the same way that Fagioli told the Italian investigators, Tonali's secret betting couldn't have been known. Tonali wasn't using a betting shop or an online platform like Ladbrokes etc., he had a phone app that took him to an illegal betting platform - these are not licensed, the web addresses are changed frequently and they are usually operated by those who are involved in other criminal activity. I'm afraid Tonali's secret betting was precisely that..... "SECRET".
