Here is Eddie Morton, ragtime era singer, and "I'm a member of the Midnight Crew, on Victor First Prize 1909 Record.
Here are the Lyrics:
Lyrics
I hate a moral coward, one who lacks a manly spark
I just detest a man afraid to go home in the dark
I always spend my evening where there's women wine and song
but like a man, I always bring my little wife along!
I'm a member of the Midnight Crew
I'm a night owl, and a wise bird too
Home with the milk in the morning
Singing the same old song!
Rise with the moon, go to bed with the sun
Early to bed, and you'll miss all the fun
Bring your wife and trouble, it will never trouble you
Make her a member of the Midnight Crew!
The fun it doesn't stop 'til 12 on happy old Broadway
So what's the use of going home, until the break of day?
Now, something confidential, whisper not above a breath,
I once went home at 2 AM, and scared my wife to death!
I never shall forget the night I made Six Rapper's Run
Although I didn't have a knife, a blackjack, or a gun
I proved myself a hero of a very high degree
I ran for home, and six of them, were running after me!

Hope you will take the time to review Victrolaman's other video efforts which cover a wide and interesting range of Musical Entertainment genres from the 1890's thru the 1930's. Victrolaman

I was 8 years old when this was uploaded, I'm the generation after the ones you are refering too, and I love this era of music. I have a collection of probably 100 or more records dating from 1906 to 1928-ish and I love listening to them. I first started getting into old music from my love of technology, cause I watched an Eddie cantor phonofilm from 1923, and then I started watching more of him, then I came across Al Jolson from watching an episode of the ed wynn show from 1949 where he was mentioned, I decided to look him up and was hooked immediately. A few years later I started collecting old records and then got this POS portable phonograph from the early 30s that barely worked, and that started my record collecting hobby. I now own a 1917 Victrola, but sadly the motor broke 2 years ago, eventually I'll buy a refurbished motor, as it's cheaper than getting the one I have rebuilt. I'm probably gonna give the broken motor to the local antiques mall phonograph booth and see if he can sell it to someone who wants it. The one thing I will NOT do is scrap it.

Over a century later, there's multiple covers (I can at least think of the acapella one, and there's two others although one never made it into the comic or an album), and several pieces of music making use of extensive samples of this. All because of some guy with a webcomic. The internet is a crazy and amazing place.

I appreciate most of the comments, but have had to remove a few from time to time because some contained profanity. Also note that in addition to this video, The music portion of this video was admittedly "ripped" from Victrolaman's efforts here, and used on the only other entry on You Tube of this wonderful song by Eddie Morton. That other entry now has over 135,000 hits. At least that individual was upfront enough to admit his use of Victrolaman's efforts, in his detailed information.

Another good one to watch would be the great gatsby probably, especially the old version. It's really interesting to see, the roaring 20's and all. American music was interesting back then. An excellent song--I've been a fan of old ragtime/vaudeville stuff for some time, but had never heard of Eddie Morton until Homestuck made a reference to him.

Real glad Andrew Hussie got this popular. Doubt I'd have ever heard it otherwise. Just picked up Homestuck Vol. 8 and I've played this song QUITE a bit since then. Thank you Victrolaman, and thank you based hussie.

This song is probably one of the best songs I've ever heard on the record player. What a real gem too, don't expect to see stuff like this on youtube. Thanks very much for the upload!

I've loved this song for awhile, and listened to this version on this video multiple times, but I usually closed the window once the song was over. This time I watched all the way to the end, and even though I look at "1909" and think "that was awhile ago", hearing "101 years ago" just makes it really settle in for me - isn't technology grand? And the fact that this insanely old record is still around and - gah! So cool! Thanks again for uploading this gem and sharing it with the world! :)

@Achturn About a year or so ago a friend of mine acquired some records and was selling them. I managed to buy this one from him and about 10 others. My advice would be to search ebay under 78rpm Records, Eddie Morton, and Midnight Crew. You can keep a permanent search going on ebay and they will automatically email you when anything for Eddie Morton or Midnight Crew comes up. You could also join a 78rpm record collectors on-line list and put in a request for the record.

This is really a great song, and your comment above about how this was played directly into a recording horn gives me a greater respect for the singer and his band. I look forward to looking at some more of these thoughtfully recorded and subtitled videos. Thank you for your work in bringing these excellent songs to a new generation of listeners who otherwise wouldn't have gotten the privilege.

This song is very relaxing to me, its one of those old style songs that seem to always make your day feel better when you listen to them, I'm glad that I found this video, thank you victrolaman for putting this song up.

This song is better than the crap they play on the radio today, like Lady GaGa and Justin Bieber. I love you for posting this, and I love Hussie for linking to it.
