They where life changers for me! I was induced to Rush on the 2112 album by my friend when it came out. As a guitar player Rush changed the way I played. My Friend that introduced me to Rush just passed away last year! The last day I got to see him before he passed we talked about that very day and how this band was so important to both of us. I'll will miss those talks with my friend about Rush! Now that Neil passed I lost another very close friend. So yes purplepills they are the Best of the Best! And they bring out the best of all of us that know their music.

Because there's nothing bad to say about it. They were a hard rock band then, without which they would not have had their subsequent career with Peart. However they did betray their fans with that techno soft rock they churned out for years after moving pictures.

I heard the the split was a peaceful and mutual one despite the differences between John and the other two. I guess that is why you never here shit talked about John.

I have no respect for Trunk. He has publicly spread a ton of misinformation about the 1980's Rush period. Just because he doesn't like synthesizers in rock music does not make albums like "Grace Under Pressure" and "Hold Your Fire" into artistic and commercial failures. Those albums sold more copies than any of Rush's 70's albums with the exception of "2112," which most fans are interested in, like me, for the first side concept piece. They were playing to 18K per night from 1982-1988. I know tons of Rush fans who only like that period of the band,

@@timsears951 That's not true, he had a discussion and was told that he would be best served as a person to not do this tour etc, so he was basically asked to leave for his own good. He didn't decide to leave, he was asked to.

There were musical differences too, in addition to John's health. As Geddy and Alex discussed in endless interviews, Rutsey was a straight ahead drummer whose favorite band was Bad Company. Ged and Al had no interest in that sort of rock. As soon as 1973 they were deeply into Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and all the English progressive rock bands. They wanted to combine Led Zeppelin/Deep Purple with progressive rock, and Rutsey just was not going there, and frankly, he COULD NOT go there. He also lacked the same level of ambition as Geddy and Al - see the documentary "Beyond The Lighted Stage." Geddy and Al were DEADLY serious as musicians. He was not nearly as good of a drummer as Neil was in 1974. They had to make the change to realize Rush MUSICALLY. I honestly believe that even early albums like "Caress of Steel" and "2112" couldn't have been made with John, but Jesus, once they got to "Kings" and "Hemispheres" w/ all of the endless time signatures, John was simply not good enough on the skins to play on those records. I think Eddie Trunk was a bit of an idiot to ask this question. As great as Geddy and Alex are, I still feel that Neil Peart was the key member in Rush. He not only wrote the lyrics for the band with such a unique perspective that had never been attempted before, but he was one of the very few drummers in rock who could transition between insane time signatures and still make songs like "Freewill" and "Subdivisions" into FM radio staples. Folks, even with Neil on board, Rush would have been dropped by Mercury Records if not for the success of "2112." I'd bet thousands of bucks that Rush would've died as a band by 1976 if Rutsey were still the drummer. I know a lot of Rush fans still dig that first Rush album, but there is a difference between liking something and reality. It just didn't sell worth shit. They wanted to get back into the studio to do "Fly By Night" as quickly as possible. Another thing that doesn't get talked about enough is that it was actually John Rutsey who wrote many of Rush's early lyrics. When they made that first album, Rutsey wouldn't deliver the lyrics or was reluctant to be the lyricist in the group. So many of the lyrics on the first Rush album were penned by Geddy, in the studio, in a matter of minutes. It's part of the reason why we have stupid lyrics like "In The Mood" which do not relate to Rush at all. I think Geddy was not very happy with John for doing what he did. A lot of this is discussed in the the ONLY authorized Rush biography called "Contents Under Pressure" which not enough Rush fans have read.

RUSH night was a different animal. The crowd was different, the vibe in the fans was different, the excitement and anticipation was like no other. RUSH night was a very special event always! I’ve had the similar experience you have. They really were incomparable and always delivered A flawless show every time! Zero mistakes on such a high level concert. Very few bands can deliver this well live for years. RUSH night was an automatic. That’s how we felt. Absolutely no one was going to pass up any given tour. I didn’t for years. I saw them live 18 times over 17 tours over the decades. I am fortunate to live in a city that were fans from the very beginning. We are one of their favorite cities (they have said so) so that initial Stronghold is something the band would never forget and came hear on 99% of their tours. The city is San Antonio, TEXAS. A good chunk of the RUSH ARMY are TEXAN.

@@MattSmith-iq1ld i can sit and listen to their 1st album from beginning to end with NO problem. GREAT debut! NOT their worst by far considering they made Presto, Snakes & Clockwork. THOSE are unlistenable except for 1, maybe 2 songs per album.

If you REALLY want to learn about the band, the book "Contents Under Pressure," the only authorized biography on the band, tells you more about the group than the distorted documentary ever will.

I'd say The Rolling Stones - they're probably the closest with a stable(ish) line-up for many many years...but they haven't done a record of new material in years and years. Marillion have been going for 30+ years with the one big change in lineup (lead singer Fish departing and Steve Hogarth coming in) - if you're into progressive rock you have to check them out! Yes formed in 1968 as well and are still around doing new records...but they've had loads of line up changes, to the point where there's only one original member (bass player Chris Squire) still in the band. That's about it really.

Behind The Lighted Stage is a crock of shit documentary, and Rush is my favorite band. Read "Contents Under Pressure" the only band endorsed biography on the band. Director Sam Dunn only likes a small portion of the band's career. He twisted the story to suit his own purposes.
