What’s going on my fellow rock n’ rollers. Don’t foget to hit the bell notification i con to be notified everytime i pout out a new video on my channel. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen would play a crucial role in pop star Michael Jackson’s hit song Beat it from his 6th album Thriller. The guitarist was taken by surprise when Thriller came out in 1982 and his name was nowhere to be found. Not only that but Eddie wasn’t the original guitarist who was asked to play on the song So what happened. Stay tuned to find out the full story.
The Who's Pete Townshend would claim that he was originally asked to play on the song Beat It, but was unable to and instead recommended Eddie Van Halen telling Rolling Stone
“I was once asked by Michael Jackson to play electric guitar on the Thriller album,” “I said I couldn’t do it but recommended Eddie who called and we chatted. He was utterly charming, happy about the connection, but told me how much he was enjoying playing keyboards. His smile was just classic. A man in his rightful place, so happy to be doing what he did.”
Eddie Van Halen was personally asked by Thriller’s producer Quincy Jones to help with the song. Eddie admitted in a 2012 interview with CNN that he didn’t know a person named Quincy at the time and thought the phone call was a practical joke saying:
“I went off on him. I went, ‘What do you want, you f-ing so-and-so!,’” “And he goes, ‘Is this Eddie?’ I said, ‘Yeah, what the hell do you want?’ ‘This is Quincy.’ I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t know anyone named Quincy.’ He goes, ‘Quincy Jones, man.’ I went, ‘Ohhh, sorry!’” Eddie agreed to do the track but was also skeptical about how much he had in common with Jackson considering they played different styes of music. But Jackson had actually written “Beat It” to be a rock song, helped in large part Toto guitarist Steve Lukather who also played on the track.
Van Halen had a break in their working schedule and according to the guitarist he did the session for free and it only took about 20 minutes and his part amounted to about 20 seconds guitar solo on the track,. Quincy Jones wanted the guitarist to improvise recalling in a BBC documentary about Jackson
"I'm not gonna sit here and try to tell you what to play.
"The reason you are here is because of what you do play."
Eddie would play the solo and according to engineers in the studio it was during that session that one of the speakers caught on fire. One of the engineers would exclaim “this must be really good.”
Right before Eddie’s guitar solo begins, a noise is heard that sounds like somebody knocking at a door. It was originally reported that the knock was a person walking into Eddie's recording studio. A different story claimed that the sound was simply the musician knocking on his own guitar.[] The sound, however, is that of Jackson knocking on a drum case, as he is credited in the album's liner notes.
Eddie would tell CNN he listened to the track and re-arranged the entire track while Jackson was out of the studio, but the popstar had no issue with the song’s new arrangement as he said here.
Eddie would also claim in the same interview that Jackson’s band was very insular and that they rarely asked for outside help from musicians on records. Eddie was not credited on the album, he didnt get paid and he wasn’t in the music video, but he did make several live appearances with Jackson.. In fact Eddie would tell Piers Morgan in 2012 he was naive about how popular Jackson was saying in 2012 “whose gonna know if i play on this black kid’s record?” Eddie was probably right to be a little naive considering this was 1982 and MTV wasn’t playing a lot of black artists, in fact I’ll be doing another story in the future about how playing Michael Jackson became a huge fight for MTV and how the king of pop literally saved the network, but that’s a story for another time.
Following the release of Thriller Eddie recalled being at Tower Records and hearing the song playing in the store and how some people were critical of his guitar playing on the track claiming. "The solo comes on, and I hear these kids in front of me going, 'Listen to this guy trying to sound like Eddie Van Halen.' I tapped him on the shoulder and said, 'That is me!' That was hilarious."

The best guitarist of that time, Eddie said " I didn't ask Michael Jackson for anything". This is how one artist used to help each other to reach to the top on their career. Money is not everything. Eddie also added " His album was in no 1, our album was in no.2 . His single was in no. 2 , our single was in number 1" Although they were on competition but they didn't have any ego and still Eddie showed up on Michael's stage. Both of them are in Heaven now. I always heard that Eddie did the guitar solo for free on Beat It which makes sense why he did not get credited. That would never happen today because if Eddie Van Halen was credited on Beat It as a performer and as a songwriter since he rearranged the song, he would have made millions just on this one song. Eddie definitely made a lot of money with Van Halen so he most likely did not care. He was still part of history for playing the guitar solo on Beat It. Rest In Peace Eddie!! There will never be another guitar to change the world like you did.
@Metalbass10000

Well, from a royalties standpoint, at that time the performing musicians would get a predetermined royalty percentage, which could be a split between all the performing musicians , (often a weighted split where the bigger names pull a higher percentage, nobodies may get half a percentage or even nothing). In terms of the songwriting royalties, which are almost always more than performer's cut, that's usually a predetermined percentage, and a predetermined split between the writers (if the split isn't in writing in advance, expect to get screwed over). When he he says, "arrangement," or, "arranging," if he means the traditional music business definition of, "arrangement," which is determining what instruments are playing what parts, when, specific drum beat under verse, chorus, that role almost never would get any of the royalties for songwriting, they may get a cut of the percentage for performer. I've been in studios when the performer was just paid for the day, a hired gun, and never was expecting to get any percentage of royalties.

Steve Lukather: "Quincy Jones and Michael took a skeleton version of Beat it up to Eddie Van Halen's place as they wanted him to solo over the verse section. However, he played over a section that had more chord changes. So to fit his solo to where it went in the song, they had to cut the tape which took a lot of time to synchronise together." "After they had managed this, Jeff Porcaro and me were called in to bind Eddie's solo and some haphazard percussion which was a major headache. Initially, we rocked it out as Eddie had played a good solo but Quincy thought it too tough. So I had to reduce the distorted guitar sound and this is what was released. It was a huge R&B/rock success for us all really and helped pave the way for the bands of today that fuse these styles."

You should tell the rest of the story of "Beat it" sometime. Its really interesting. After Eddie recorded his solo, a bunch of the main tracks got either erased or lost, or damaged. Quincy Jones was left with literally nothing but Eddies Solo and a track of MJ beating on drum cases during the song. Quincy Jones called Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro from Toto, who were studio musicians besides being stars in their own right. The two young musicians were asked to completely recreate the "Beat It" song around EVH's solo. Porcaro used the Michael Jackson beating on cases track to hear the tempo, as there was bleed thru on his mike from the original drums.....just enough for Porcaro to completely create his own "click track" and redo the entire performance so it was the correct speed and length to go with EVH's solo. Then Lukather did the same with guitar and bass. After a few tweaks here and there, requested by Quincy Jones. They had reconstructed the entire song so Eddie Van Halen's solo could be snuggly nestled right into its assigned spot. The sent it all the new tracks back to Quincy Jones who mixed it all together, and the world never knew. Im not sure the real heroes in the "Beat it" tale werent Lukather and Porcaro. Without their amazing work, who knows how the song would have turned out. Eddie Van Halen's solo may have never made it into the song. Anyway -- its a great story i didnt do justice to. If you ever get a chance to hear Steve Lukather tell it....make sure you take it.

When I was a child I was introduced to all sorts of music, but 4 artists in particular stood out to me. Van Halen, AC/DC, Michael Jackson obviously and black sabbath. So of course I knew when I was younger that Townsend was not the original guitar player on beat it. Anyone who has any sense of rock ‘n’ roll knows that. I’m not disrespecting Townsend I’m just saying I knew because when I was 10 years old I knew I wanted to be a musician. I was the first girl in my family who did not want to be in the military but also who wanted to be a musician. All of my parents kids are military they boys and girls but I wanted to be a musician. And still do. Because of those guys I really want to play the guitar. Not just Van Halen not just the Young’s or Iommi but all of them. But my point here is that a long time ago I knew this. I still love Michael Jackson’s music even though he has been dead for going on 12 years now. (Shit does time fly!) and because of all of these guys we have some of the greatest music ever, not just rock ‘n’ roll not just heavy-metal but pop music. I’m not normally a big Pop fan but I like Michael Jackson’s music, I like a few more. So thank you Eddie for helping Michael create a masterpiece. Better yet thank you for creating the masterpiece.

It wasn't just Eddie and Michael Jackson. There was not mention even of Steve Lukather and Jeff Pocaro playing the drums on the track. Jeff was key in reworking the main drum track which was super primative. Jeff was the one who formed the heart of the track which followed by a dual guitar track laid by Jeff. The two parts of the song that existed were what Eddie laid down and Michael's raw vocals...along with some knocks and those "drum" sounds by michael. Neither Eddie, Steve, nor Jeff got any credit for the track. Nor was Jeff's brother Steve Pocaro credited with "Human Nature" until years later. Steve had that song practically finished before it was put on a last track of a demo reel of music for Mowtown to listen to. The legend goes that Berry gordy was listening to the demo tape and it was one of those reel to reels he had on in the background that auto flipped to side b. When it flipped over Berry was surprised to hear Steve Pocaro's keyboard riffs and demo to Human nature. He instantly loved it and asked Steve if he could use it. The rest is history. Berry had a knack of putting together pure talent..but the sad thing is that many of those who contributed or collaborated in some of the greatest songs as studio musicians or writers never got the credit they rightfully deserve...even till this day.

That's crazy that Eddie didn't think Thriller was gonna blow up. MJ's previous album Off The Wall was a huge commercial and critical success and was played everywhere back in the day. Eddie probably wasn't listening to a lot R&B, pop and dance stations so I could see how he wouldn't know that Thriller was going to be a big album, whether it got played on MTV or not. That's a great story though, and that was really cool of him to do that solo for free. Love that solo. I started checking out some of Van Halen's music due to that solo. Listening to their music, I found out that in addition to being a monster on guitar, Eddie was a talented songwriter.

when I was teenager in the 80s , Edward was the guy we all wished we were. The epitome of cool. Like Jimmy Page was to 70s teens . Except Edward seemed more like a normal everyday guy , who just happened to be a gifted player .He was the Mtv rockstar , married to the hot chick from the tv show. The guy with the stripey guitar and the lightning fast licks and the killer tone. When I finally got to see VH I was 30 and it seemed surreal. Like seeing Kiss in 96 , it was like a cartoon character came to life in front of me. He was the main man to 80s kids who loved hard rock music. An icon. There were other shredders but he was the original. He had the style AND the songs to go with it. Like Page said today , there were imitators but Edward was ALWAYS the real deal. His musicality set him apart. The others could show off their chops and technique but he had the songs too. Your technique doesn't mean anything if you don't have good songs. EVH had them.

okay.... (1) Jackson and Eddie Van Halen were great musicians, deserving their # 1s. (2) but like Retired said "Lol it was a good solo but that title is a bit much. Click bait anyone, mmmmmm" (a) Wikipedia said "Billie Jean" is Jackson's greatest hit. (b) and Wikipedia said "Thriller" replaced "Billie Jean" as his biggest hit, apparently because of DJs downloading it for Halloween. (3) so "Beat It" is the 3rd best-selling single from the 7 singles released from Thriller. Maybe it used to be 2nd, but I can't believe it was first.

I love Eddie, and he defiently had a part in the songs success. However he played a pretty small part in it if you compare to some other people like Quincy, Michael and Lukather (who is probably th unsung hero of Beat it). Eddie didnt "rearrange the whole song" like this video is trying to claim, he just rearanged the solo part. The song was pretty much already done on a Demo tape. He just did the solo on a different tape and sent it to the studio, were Lukather added all the the Guitar riffs and Bass as well. Quincy was the only one who rearanged the song when he wanted it to be more of a pop-tune and changed the quadrippled guitars to 2, after that Lukather added som more riffs together with Michael and the song was done. Eddie gave the song more recognition in the world of rock tho, so thats was a really nice touch to let him do the solo.
