It's funny how people don't buy the argument of Edward being the conflictive one on these situations when he is the sole constant. The only VH members he didn't fire were his family (Alex and Wolfgang).

I boycotted the last tour because they left out Mike (I was once an amateur bass player) and I wish I had that one back. In hindsight it’s clear the Van Halens are ferociously protective of their family circle and when Wolf was ready, Ed was elated to be playing with his son. I think in the end he would want his true fans to understand that. It’s not like Wolf was a hack, he was great on the last record as a 15 yo. Mike deserved it but in this case family came first. My $0.02

David Lee Roth is a psychotic ego maniac and I do believe that Sammy should have come back before eddies passing!!!! Eddie was the main songwriter so it was definitely his band he was the captain and it’s a shame that egos and bullshit rumours was said that caused relationships break ups !! I saw VH in Melbourne Australia with Garry on vocals and the show was unbelievable and to this day was the best performance from a band I’ve ever seen and heard !!! RIP Eddie !! The musical genius who invented guitars and amplifies and took a 6 string guitar to a level that future generations of musicians will be talking about for years to come!! ❤

I really would have liked to have heard what Mitch Malloy would have sounded like with VH around the Time of the VH III Album . He had spent a lot of time with Eddie rehearsing Van Halen Songs and was the first Choice to replace Sammy Hagar before Gary Cherone came along at the last minute to get the Job . Mitch was a little devastated to lose the Lead Singer Job since he was promised the Job by Eddie repeatedly for Weeks .Fortunately for Mitch , Eddie gave Mitch one of his VH Demo Song Compositions as a Consolation Gift for not getting the Lead singing job . Mitch made a Great song out of it for his Solo Career . Eddie didn't get any Credit for the Song .

That is cool that you got to see them in there original incarnation. They were completely at the top of their game at that point. I was a kid, but I was shocked not only that they parted ways with Roth but that they changed singers relatively quickly. It was smart to bring in Sammy though - people knew him, so he wasn't exactly a stranger and his solo career did pretty well by that time. Still though when it comes down to it nothing beats the original lineup.

I was a huge fan of Van Halen in the 80s and early 90s. I thought the transition from Dave to Sammy went well. The music matured as it should. Then, out of nowhere, Sammy's out. To me, especially looking back, this was the end of the Van Halen that i loved. Bringing Dave out at the MTV awards, they deceived the fan base who was salivating to have Dave back. The rest is history. VH3 flopped, and then they tried to reunite with Dave and Sam out of desperation. That's when they're true colors shown through. The way they treated Michael Anthony made me sick and watching Eddie on stage trying to perform while being wasted on drugs and alcohol was embarrassing. They did every money grab they could get and squeezed every dollar they could from their loyal fans. Now they can't even put together a tribute together for Eddie, the so-called GOAT of guitar players. He could have been, but to me, spent too many years doing nothing. Im glad Sam and Mike are still class acts. They are carrying the torch. The Van Halen story, if told honestly, is a very sad tale.
@rladen1
@rladen1 Месяц назад
Look at how he treated EVERYONE when he was not sober. It's pathetic. This coming from a guy who worships Dave era Halen and Eddie as a musician. How he treated Michael Anthony. He tried to replace Mikey from Diver Down until he actually replaced him. The excuse is always "he wanted to play with his son". I am sure that is true, but I also know he had major issues with Mike due to lack of songwriting and perceived poor playing. There has to be more to it. Valerie Bertinelli was such a nice person that she should have been married to Michael. I know Mike was happily married during his years with VH.

Sammy was a rock star, before , and after VH. I would put Sammy's solo career vs Roth anytime. VH sold more albums packed more arenas with Sammy. Roth was a self asorbed asshole. I would hate to spend money to watch a drunk lead singer, forgetting lyrics running around self promoting. Eddie Van Halen is the star. Roth wasn't even the true sound of Van Halen. Micheal Anthony background vocals gave VH that true VH sound, amongst the screams and Scatting of Roth. Go back and watch the Videos ! With Sammy they were a cohesive unit. A true band with everyone delivering there best.

@@ronstephens1497 The first VH album and 1984 were their best sellers. Those two have sold more than almost the whole Sammy catalog. With Sammy the became more of a pop act. However, we’ve just learned that Ed played most of the drums too…the bass, guitars… I don’t care VH3 was still better than 99% of other bands albums….he was the GOAT, andI miss the man each day! What a loss!

I went through a whole Van Halen listening from the first to the last albums a couple times. Usually every couple years, and I was able to hear through the intentions on VH III. There was something very rushed about how it was put together that I always pick up on. And it is a shame because when you really hear what they were going for it was actually pretty phenomenal. Especially figuring the time it hit, coming in after balance it was actually a really logical progression for the band. Eddie was so darn talented, and yeah he could pull off any of the instruments. He wasn't just a guitar player though as a guitar player man he was one of the best. That was about as close to a solo album of his we would get, but I think have they have had maybe templeman in there it would have really gelled perfectly. Had they have stayed with Gary - that next album would have been freaking incredible.

Releasing Tattoo as the first single, and then releasing She's The Woman were HUGE mistakes/miscalculations. In my opinion, Tattoo is the worst/weakest song on the album. And She's The Woman was the 2nd weakest. As Is. (The "Two hot dogs and a root beer float" 😉 if you know, you know 😆 😂 😂)😂 HoneybabySweetyDoll. Beats Working. Big River. Chinatown. Stay Frosty. You and Your Blues. Ripley.......renamed Blood and Fire or something like that. 😆 As Is would've been a good 1st track. To each their own, but i really do believe Tatt and She's The Woman were bad choices to release as singles, while HoneyBaby, As Is and Blood and Fire never see the light of day. Especially As Is, it would've been a cool "comeback" song. It's a very good album, with way better songs than Tattoo. You And Your Blues would've made a good single. Give ADKOT a few listens. It's a very good album.

Like a lot of artists, it's more like when the drugs and alcohol were at their peak. It's like basically an artist gets famous and rich enough that they're pretty much given the keys to the kingdom so they start partying.... And they can have literally anything that they want at any time - but eventually after a while it just takes its toll. Eddie had some real rough times with that but in the end he came out pretty cool

there's a video of one of the australia shows. i don't know about the 'iii' album, but thought that the show was great, and even made a case that cherone was their best singer ever. roth was the best frontman, but as a singer, cherone might have been the best. there's such a small sample size of that era, though...
@guitarmeetsscience

Gary is a phenomenal singer - totally agreed! He was able to cover both Roth and Sammy's range. The tribe of Judah version of "left for dead" signaled the direction that Van Halen might have headed had he have stayed on board. And man it totally rocks. That would have been a real comeback for that lineup I believe. They wouldn't see a huge comeback until a different kind of truth, but by then the audience was somewhat fatigued by all the lineup changes that had kept happening with them. It's a shame because I think a lot of people missed out - love that last album

@TheRealcdawg22 My condolences man. I can totally relate - I had lost my father around Thanksgiving the previous year, but he and I had been out of touch and I didn't find out until 2020. The pandemic was in full swing.... Neil Peart, yep - that was just devastating. Life at work was hell, and then that email during one of the grueling shifts arrived with the subject line RIP EVH. With so many people dying and just the pure chaos and pandemonium it's a wonder how we managed to come out of it. You're exactly right it definitely did not have to be that bad - And it was also painful to watch people making bad decision after bad decision. Goodness - How the heck did we get through that now that I think about it....

@TheRealcdawg22 You obviously did the right thing. Some people were just in a bad situation in terms of having to be in the public. However I would say most were kind of careless. But still couldn't blame them, life had just changed so darn much that I think a lot of people couldn't roll with it. And those that did went through a level of stress that is just indescribable. Each and every person took a hit on that one - I have my own theories that it was containable but that society was so addicted to "business as usual".... But I digress. I'm sure there are a lot of lessons learned, But at the highest levels I think there were no lessons learned whatsoever and given a repeat - it would be as bad or worse. Hoping for no repeats for sure!

The record company wanted Gary out and either Sam or Dave back in. I read that before the 04 reunion with Sammy, they tried with Dave and Dave dropped out because Ed was too messed up. A couple songs on ADKOT were written between 2000 and 2002. From what I read. The rest were old demos of course, with some rewrites/updated lyrics.

2 different bands as VH were totally different with Sammy. Sammy did best on his own and was the 5th singer asked to replace Dave after Patti Smythe, Daryl Hall, and 2 others I forget. Ed said repeatedly , Sam's attitude changed around that time around Carnal and Balance . In a Howard Stern RU-vid compilation of Van Halen , around that time Sam started saying things like " This is MY band . " , and " Lead singer of the band , leader of the band , what's the difference ? " . It wasn't Ray's fault . I always wondered why he even mentioned Ray's name in the BALANCE song Can't Stop Loving You . In the VH3 promotion issue of THE INSIDE MAGAZINE ( independent Van Halen fan magazine ) Alex , Eddie AND Mike all said Captain Candyass quit .

Eddie was coked out of his mind during most of the 80s and 90s and has been historically a prick. Furthermore, he always tends to be very mean-spirited when things don't go his way. People believing Ed, who has issues with almost everyone, including someone as calm and collected as Michael Anthony, are very innocent. All because the dude played well. Amazing guitarist, but his mental state during most of his run as a musician wasn't the best.

I’m not a hug Van Hagar fan, but I totally believe Sammy on this stuff, and Dave for that matter. Eddie’s a musical genius there’s no denying it, but I think he was easily influenced especially when it came to his ego. I’m sorry but as egotistical and out there as Dave is, I just can’t see him saying “Tonight’s about my movie, not about your hip”. However, I can imagine Eddie being pissed about Dave promoting his movie on VH air time and saying something like that.
