It's been a hot and dry summer here in the Pacific Northwest, but that's not stopping the wild edible mushrooms from popping up. Some of the most sought-after wild edible mushrooms can be found right now if you know where to look and what they look like. Aaron Hilliard, vice president of the Kitsap peninsula mycological Society, takes us on a jaunt into the forest to discover the delicious wild fungi that can be found in July and August of 2023.
Golden chanterelle mushrooms are some of the most popular wild edibles in the world, and they're fruiting right now in large numbers, but they can be kind of tough to spot. Watch this video to learn what they look like and how to spot them. Also a strange symbiotic relationship between a host and a parasitic mushroom creates a really exotic looking and delicious wild edible mushroom known as the lobster mushroom. I found both of these growing on the same trail this week.
Aaron Hilliard is a mushroom enthusiast from way back and continues to make videos here for mushroom Wonderland to showcase all of the amazing fun guys that grow in the gorgeous forests of the Pacific Northwest. Make sure to hit subscribe and ding the notification bell so you can be notified as to when new videos are dropping. Whether you're a mushroom enthusiast, someone who just likes to forage wild food, or someone who loves the ASMR of a beautiful forest, these are the videos for you.

I've found several matsutake and boletes in the last week. Crazy to see them pop up when the soil is so dry and dusty!

Aaron. Learning so much from you. I've been watching for awhile now, since the OG documentary. Motivated to forage, grow and connect... thanks so much. There are a few people I've been watching around the world, along with Mushroom Wonderland and it is safe to say I've got the myco bug & kinda have had it for 30yrs but was flying solo and not learning very much... infact, I thought it to complicated to learn but today I can follow along with this episode and I'm not completely clueless anymore and of course I wanna know more. 🙏

Your video reminded me to go check some of my spots today. No chantarelles or lobsters but I did find some Agaricus Augustus so I'm not too sad.

That's so interesting that chants are primarily fall mushrooms in the PNW. I've only lived in the Midwest and East Coast but just kind of figure they were a height-of-summer thing everywhere!

The PNW is _very_ dry in the summer -- much drier than the Midwest and East Coast. Too dry for mushrooms, except for very near the coast, where low clouds come in off the ocean. Late fall - spring is our rainy season.

Dang, you hit the motherlode of chanterelles! Are you close to the coast range where you are foraging?
@mushroomwonderland1

No, inland Puget sound, couple hours from the coast. Every summer we have a flush of them but this year is exceptionally good. If you have a known chanterelle patch go check on it, you might be surprised!

I am a bit confused... Some Russulas will only start to taste spicy after 2-3 minutes of chewing it, but will still ruin your dish if you put it in and might upset your stomach. Not sure if that only is the case in europe though Btw. In japan there is a mildtasting russula variety that is toxic too

I found a tapinella atrotomentosa yesterday, first one ever, but found inconsistent info on its edibility. Could you please clarify if it’s edible or not? And have you tried one/ can you comment on it’s taste and consistency? Thanks so much Aaron @MushroomWonderland
@mushroomwonderland1
@mushroomwonderland1 11 месяцев назад
I have never eaten one but in parts of Europe they eat them pretty regularly, it's non-toxic but people don't forage and eat them here in the States, I'm not sure why.
