On the 24 September, EDICa hosted a panel of 4 deaf researchers, hosted by EDICa's Deputy Principal Investigator and the EDI Lead on the project - Prof Jemina Napier. The seminar begins with a short introduction of EDICa, followed by 5 pre-prepared questions that each panellist responds to, and finally a Q&A session.
Unfortunately Zoom's recordings are not set up for scenarios where there are slides, a video of silent person signing, and a separate contributor voicing the interpretation. So this recording does not show the slides, but a deaf person can watch Jemina signing the introduction. A separate video will show slides but no sign language, and hearing person can listen to Andy's interpretation of Jemina. The rest of the seminar will be identical in the two recordings.
About our Panellists
Ixone Sáenz Paraíso is a PhD student at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Spain, but living in the UK. Ixone was born and raised in the Basque region of Spain, and completed a masters in data science at London South Bank University. She worked with Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh on a glossary of data terms in British Sign Language.
Dr Mette Sommer Lindsay is an Assistant Professor in Languages and Intercultural Studies at Heriot-Watt University. She’s originally from Denmark and researches Deaf and Disability studies, employment sociology and minority entrepreneurship.
Dr Luigi Lerose is a Senior Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer in Sign Language at UCLAN (University of Central Lancaster). Luigi is Culturally Deaf and graduated from Alpen Adria University in Austria, and has served as President/Chair of the European Network of Sign Language Teachers from 2017-2023. His research focuses on sign language, linguistics, and language pedagogy.
Dr Emma Ferguson-Coleman just started this August as a Lecturer in dementia and ageing at the University of West London. She had previously spent 14 years working at the University of Manchester, working in the field of mental health and deafness.
Prof Jemina Napier grew up as a hearing person with a number of deaf family members. She became a BSL interpreter and continued on to study linguistics. She also works in Australian Sign Language (she did her PhD at Macquarie University in Australia) and International Sign. At Heriot-Watt University, Jemina is currently the Associate Principal for Research Culture & People. Jemina recently did a podcast with “Language on the Move” discussing her book about Sign Language Brokering where she touches on her background and the changes in acceptance of children signing for family members.
