Edifier S880DB is newest addition to Edifier lineup, one that aims at a consumer expecting premium build quality and very good sound quality. Does it deliver compared with Edifier R1280DB? In terms of build quality and looks it is definetly more premium product. But what about the sound quality? Here the answer is also positive for S880DB with one exception, the bass that is rather underwhelming in terms of quantity in the lowest ranges. R1280DB can hit harder, and is more dynamic in low ranges, unfortunately it also lacks refinement and detail found in S880DB acorss the midrange and high end.

I've watched many of your comparison videos today and every track you played for the test is great too so it's a joy to listen to the comparison at the same time quite a lot of "wow factor" when you notice the differences between speakers! Thanks for putting these videos together, they really are something special, and recorded so well.

Because of your sound tests and comparison videos, I got the S880DB today. It was on sale and I could not resist. Oh, boy! These speakers are fire! Cannot stop listening to them. They are the perfect size for a normal work desk, they look beautiful, and they are heavy af. Quality builds, amazing sound, I am impressed. So THANK YOU!

Are your S880DB speakers creating any hissing noise (when you hear a sound coming from your speakers when they're not playing music - just turned on)? Is this hissing noise low or high?

Just bought the R1280DB!!! its 65USD here, pretty awsome and the S880DB is 180USD just about 3 times the difference!

can you give us more info..are tone controls set to neutral on both speakers and on 1280DB's, shouldn't the tweeters be on the inside of soundstage? what you think?

hey, the choice depends on what kind of music you listen to. Do you need bass for jazz or classics ...? I have both models, first R1280 then S880, and I got what I wanted ...

I have 1280 and I am very happy with them. The quality / price ratio is the best I have seen (I bought them for 79€). Yes, it is true that the 880s are better heard, but in my case, since I have them on the sides of the TV, I would miss the bass in the movies.

Thanks for the vide. What type of input is fed into S880DB ? RCA input will not give a proper result. Since the speaker is supporting 24 bit 192 Khz by its internal DAC , and provides jitter elimination with circuitry, it must have a better definition with the USB port. USB Audio Player Pro on Android, with USB OTG cable will make it using Tidal or Qobuz as a source. I have an edifier R1280DB at home , the result with the optical input and bluetooth are the same, probably 24 bit 48 Khz. The sound with RCA input is terrible, even if the signal is coming out of Topping D50 DAC.

S880db has more detail, you can hear different elements which you cant on R1280 but R1280 value is hard to beat.

@magggas0 If I understood right, you have S880DB? Are you satisfied with them? Is the bass really "non-existent" like people say? I had Mackie CRX3 which have 3" driver compared to 4" on S880DB and didn't mind a bit weaker bass.

You can do it if You use external source. If You want to use S880DB's internal USB DAC or Blutooth reciever than there is no way to connect subwoofer to them

No clear cut winner to me. It really depends on the style of music you listen to. Retro Wave sounds better on the R1280DB I think as it has more bass, as well as Dirty Swamp jack. The S88 has more detail and seperation. Is it worth double the price? Probably not but everyone has a different use case.

880 это мониторный, ровный звук от сюда и цена, на них даже можно полноценно работать со звуком. 1280 это музыкальная акустика с глубокой сценой, мягким, бархатистым звуком, с множеством послезвучий. Обе акустики хорошие, но нужно понимать для чего вы ее берете.

O S880db está em outro nível, mais limpo detalhado talves um pouco metálico mas o R1280db é abafado com agudos sujos .

Teguh Suryadi it is possible. A subwoofer should have 4 terminals: 2 positive and 2 negative for the left and right channels. You just use speaker cables to connect the powered speaker to the positive and negative terminals for the left channel, and then using more speaker wire again, connect those left channel terminals also to the right channel terminals making sure to match positive and negative for all connections. So, at the end, the powered speaker should be connected to the Left channel of the Sub and the Left of the Sub should be connected again to the Right channel of the Sub, positive with positive, and negative with negative in all connections. So, the power is travelling from the powered speaker to both left and right channels of the sub.

S880DB is circa twice as expensive as R1280DB in my country, You can expect similar price in other countries respective to R1280DB

Digital Stereophony thanks. For the price I’ll definitely go with the R1280d. I’m avoiding the the r1280db due to the price jump and in my opinion, the sound quality. They’re $100 in the us, the DBs are $130, so I’m assuming the S880DBs are $230.

Да, колонки подключаются к любому компьютеру usb проводом.

@@Wladimir360 я могу сказать, что мне ооочень нравится! Я долго сомневалась, выбирала из нескольких вариантов, пересмотрела множество роликов на RU-vid, и тысячи комментариев перечла. Я не разбираюсь в слабостях низов, верхов басов и пр. Мне просто хотелось приятного гармоничного звука, и я полностью довольна S880DB. На моем канале есть 2 небольших видео, если хотите посмотреть. Я не профи снимать, но очень хотелось помочь кому-то определиться. Звук ясный, чистый, глубокий, атмосферный. Колонки подходят к просмотру ТВ, т.к звук оформленный, без провалов и гулкости. В комплект входят все нужные кабеля. Единственно, не очень удобный пульт управления из-за круглой формы. На ощупь не определить, на какую кнопку нажать, нужно только смотреть. Надписи не яркие тоже. Хотя пульт увесистый, приятный на ощупь софттач, понимаешь, что это не игрушка в руках. Колонки тоже тяжелые, смотрятся очень симпатично, не громоздкие. Цена - качество соответствуют. Я очень довольна.

1280db has more deep sound, 880 is flat , If you close your eyes You can hear it how 1280 sound wider. more quality what most people heard in 880 is just a more dBm in high frequencies, You can`t trick physics. I bet on 1280.

There is no comparison here S880DB is miles ahead! Richer sound and far more clear sound. Especially the vocals sound much more alive than the R1280DB. :) Thats my ears at least

The S880DB handles the mids and highs better but the R1280DB has distinctly better sounding bass. Some sort of combination of these two speakers would be awesome.

Get you an equalizer app and even out the score. That can be achieved while keeping the banging bass 880 doesn't offer.

S880 чище да и высокие с серединой какие-то прозрачные, 1280 смазано но басовитей, по дизайну мне 880 заходят прям если бы не ценник конский

880 чище и прозрачней в верху и середине, басов меньше но это видимо из-за физика который в 1280 спереди, ну 1280 смазано как-то, но все равно дискомфорта нет приятно обе слушать 👂и мне кажется 1280 объемней звучат

У Edifier S880DB баса нет совсем, зато средне-верхний диапазон весьма неплох. Им выступать только с сабом. А вот уже Edifier R1280DB || более-менее полноценная самостоятельная пара. Но не предел совершенства, у них есть модели и получше.
