I have been officiating for 34 years now. This is exactly why it is so hard to either get good officials or keep new ones who come into the profession. I have had nose broken by a fan who tried to attack a player during a game about 20 years ago. All officials are called everything by the fans, players and coaches except a child of God. Yet, we still go out on the courts and fields of play because we love the game. Most of those who sit is the stands and yell about how terrible we are, do not know how tough it is to officiate a game in ever increasing hostile environments. Nor do they have the guts themselves to go out there themselves and officiate since they believe they can do a better job. Yeah, some may only do it for the money, nevertheless, the majority of us do it because we want to stay connected to sports we love. Seriously, I wanted to quit officiating once I got to the twentieth of doing it just so I could say I stayed in it for twenty years. Nevertheless, because our chapter, as are most, is always short of officials and I stay around because help is needed or games will either be cancelled or have no officials. All over the country it is the same. People do not want to officiate because people are so rude, mean and like this player, you do not know if you are going to be attacked.

Georgia Dad and Granddad here. I have watched high school football for over 50 years, and have never seen a player attack a referee. The lack of self-discipline is astounding with this young man! The criminal charge was necessary. His anger issues and lack of self-discipline need to be addressed now before he does something even worse. My suggestion is the court have him enlist in the Marines. After a few days at Paris Island, I can promise you the Drill Instructors will have him under complete control.

I can totally understand why the rest of the football team is upset about their season ending despite deserving to go to the playoffs. However, they're learning a valuable life lesson, likely of far greater value than even a state championship. When you're part of a team, your actions reflect on the rest of the team. When one person behaves poorly, the whole team suffers consequences. It sucks, but that's life.

@Steven Kincaid I played, all through junior high, and high school. Didn't have the speed for college. If the guy had blind-sided an older guy with a punch or kick off the field, say, at a store, this discussion would not happen, would it? No. Yet its essentially the same despicable act. You apply a diuble standard, though, and spread the responsibility to the whole team simply because it happened on the field. Why is the whole team accountable in the one situation, but not in another? Let take another example, this one on the field. High school, college or pro. Player gets flagged, and shoves the ref who threw it. At all levels, that would be an instant ejection from the game, with expulsion from the team, suspensions, and for pros, large fines to follow. All applied to one player. The team is not forced to forfeit the game, they aren't disbanded. The sole penalty is levied against one person. You can't decree group punishment is warranted here but not there, because this offense is worse than that one. The group celebration thing is nonsense. Let's take that idea to adulthood. You and your coworkers get a bonus at year end since the company did well. That's celebrating success together, everyone worked to a goal where each did their part to hzve success as a group. Teamwork. Then Joe is caught doing something bad. Say, making racist remarks. Possibly illegal, certainly a breach of conduct. Should the whole team be reprimanded? After all, they all worked together to do well, and they all benefited from Joe's work. They should all be punished as a group. That's your logic, is it not? Any group that helps each other and make a collective success should also be accountable as a group for the actions of any individual member. And its possible one or more of the other players might have been in the running for a scholarship they wouldn't get now, because they don't have the chance to be in the big games now. Too bad. Back to the office, and now because your team all have reprimands in your HR record because of Joe, you all are denied a raise and Sara loses her promotion. Better luck next year. If its absurd at work, why is it okay in sports?

This will teach the kids a valuable lesson next season that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. If they join military, firefighting, police force or a job they will understand. Life isn’t fair. As for the coaches don’t let kids join the team if they have a behavior problem.

If that punk had any documented prior discipline issues, The Refs lawyer will have a field day! And now, any Texas HS players will think twice about hitting an official. Listen young men, after your team mate hit the ref, what did you do? Why, you put up a defensive wall and got ready to "rumble". You will now serve as an example to others who find themselves on the wrong side of an action. Live with it and learn a valuable lesson while others learn from the "mistake" your team made. Perhaps that defensive wall you put up should have protected the ref from your unhinged team mate.

This guy says "I don't think the team should be punished for something that one individual did." But it's a team game. Every time an individual on the team breaks a rule, the team gets punished. If one guy jumps offsides, the team gets punished. If one guy hits the QB late, the team gets punished. If one guy blocks from behind, the team get punished. In this case, the punishment is very stiff because the attack was very brutal and very extreme.

They have every right to suspend them! He has a history of roughness and the team has done nothing to stop it so yes, they should be removed...
