Hello Cpt. Thank you for the great and super nice departure video from Edinburgh. 👌👍 What I found great is that you displayed the take off speeds during the briefing. 😀 I can only say again, it's great to be able to look over your shoulder at work. I’ll be flying from there later this month (the first time from Edinburgh since I was a kid), sadly not with Eurowings… I used to work at St John’s Hospital in Livingston, right under your flight path - every time I would go outside for a break I’d hear/see beautiful aircraft soaring above and would wonder where they were going or coming from. One of my favourite aspects of flying is the point where the aircraft meets the cloud layer and for a short time is consumed by cloud with nothing else to see (this is particularly so if the weather is typically British, grey, wet and miserable) Then the aircraft emerges from the gloom into bright sunlight and the clouds sink away beneath it. I never tire of seeing the shapes of the clouds and the beauty of colours reflected in them and I often wonder whether you Pilots are so familiar with this that you no longer notice? What would be your favourite part of the flight I wonder? Thank you again for another great video Sir.

@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
It may look or sound confusing for a viewer who has no aviation experience. But for us pilots it is not confusing at all. The procedures and the communication between the pilots and with ATC are based on standards. We speak up if something seems not right and we use checklists to make sure that we do not forget an important item. This all helps to improve safety in commercial aviation. If you watch several of my videos you will see that the basis of our work is always the same.

@schwappingmags1008 Год назад
I would guess TAT at or below 10 and visble moisture in this departure.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
In general, we use ENG anti-ice when we expect possible icing conditions. They are defined as visible moisture with a temperature (TAT/total air temperature) of 10 degrees C or less. If the static air temperature (SAT) goes below -40C during climb or cruise, we switch off engine anti-ice, even when flying in visual moisture. During the descent, the -40C rule is not valid. Visual moisture can be rain, fog, clouds, snow and standing water on the ground .......

Great ! I've noticed that the after take off/climb checklist was not called so I did some research and found out that Airbus changed its flow patterns and recommended normal SOP in late 2021. Intersting, how do you find this change Captain ? Notably that the packs and altimeters setting are now non checklist items after departure. I imagine in a case of a packs off take off, the alarm will still chime if the pressuration doesnt kick in, but yet I think the previous checklist added a layer of safety. Good thing that the down to the line/below the line are gone, I suppose they were source of potential confusions. Your content is very educative and motivates me through my modular training, cheers to that ! Danke schön ✌
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
Thanks for watching and the detailed feedback! Even with the old checklists, we did not have the after takeoff climb checklist implemented. The airline I used to work before had the checklist in the SOPs. The new checklists are a result of inputs to Airbus from lots of airlines and include everything which has to be checked and is not checked otherwise. For example: If we say "set standard" and Crosscheck the altitudes, there is no need to do it again in a checklist. I have no big complaints about the new SOPs and checklists.

Hello! I´d like to thank you in a first way for producing such a comprehensive and educational content, as well as for your professionalism and I´d like to ask you a question. You as a crew don´t really seem concerned about CTOT at all considering your departure videos. Is that because no slots were assigned that time, conditions were such that no "threat" of violating your slot was expected, or you had already discussed your slot?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
Thanks for the great feedback! We care very much about ATC slots and even about the airport slots which are coordinated times for our flights. In some videos we talk about it. Especially if we may be too early or too late. You wrote about the CTOT, which is the ATC slot. Some flights have ATC slots, some not. But in general we cannot violate these slots. ATC will only provide a startup clearance if we would be able to takeoff in the slot window. If not, we have to get a new slot.
@mst3943
@mst3943 Год назад
Great video again and thank you very much for your double work :) How do you know when to turn on the engine anti ice? In this case you could see the thin layer of clouds due to daylight, but how would you see it at a very dark night?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
Thanks for the good feedback and your question. When we do not know if we are in clouds or not and the temperature indication would require engine antiice when in clouds, we would assume that we are in clouds and switch anti ice on. Most of the time, we are also able in the dark to determine if we are in clouds or not. If we see the lights on the ground or the stars or the moon in the sky, we know that we are not in the clouds.

Dear Captain, what is the title abbreviation AFC on your LIDO charts showing at 01:59? Why do you use this charts? Is it like a summary of the ILS procedures, MSA and vicinity?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
AFC means Airport Facility Chart. It gives an overview of the airport facilities and the surrounding of the airport, including MSA ... This is great for our general situational awareness and helps us to determine our options in case of an immediate return to the airport.

Thank you for showing a departure from my home airport. Clear skies here this morning. How does the aircraft know to transition from one operating mode to the next (blue) state. Is it automatic or are you changing mode somewhere?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
Thanks for watching and your question. The blue indications on the FMA are "armed modes". That means for example if you chose an ILS approach (instrument landing system) in the MCDU and push the approach button on the FCU, the autoflight system is armed (GS and LOC blue) and ready to intercept and follow the ILS when coming close to the centerline. When intercepting, it shows LOC* in green. This means it is in the capture phase. After that, when captured, it is shown in green as the active mode. The same is true for the glideslope: First it is blue, than you see GS* in green during the capture phase and when captured and following, it shows GS in green.

@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
The clear sign with the pin was visible to us at about 7:10. You could not see it in the video because it was shown from the right side. The pin is the pin the ground crew uses to deactivate our nose gear steering during the pushback. It usually has a large "remove before flight" flag connected to it.
@matthewwakeling4978
@matthewwakeling4978 Год назад
I noticed the ground crew presumed that you would start engine 2 first. Do you always/mostly start that engine first, and does that cause any difference in wear between the two engines?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
In accordance to the Airbus SOP, engine 2 is started first. Reason for that procedure is that the yellow hydraulic system which is pressurized from engine 2 is delivering pressure to the parking brake accumulator. The idea behind this is that if you do a remote engine start (without moving) that the airplane does not start moving by itself when the chocks are removed.
@11clarkm
@11clarkm Год назад
I always thought that, in the UK, altitudes and FL’s on the SID’s were for reference only. As such, there is no “climb now” instruction, simply just “climb”. Am I mistaken?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
If the departure routing out of Heathrow, Edinburgh or so shows waypoints that have to be crossed at a maximum altitude, we are not allowed to climb higher unless cleared by ATC to do so. The ATC wording for the cancelling of the restriction is "climb now" or "climb unrestricted". For example: If the instruction would be "climb FL 130", all lower altitude restrictions on the routing have to be observed until we hear "climb now" or "climb unrestricted".

Good evening. To reduce the risk of so called nuisance RA’s ( Resolution Advisories ) from the TCAS, which are operationally unnecessary, a cockpit crew can reduce the ROC within the last 1000 or 2000 ft before reaching the assigned flight level to a value of around +/- 1000 or 500 ft/min depending on the SOP’s of an Operator. There are issued may guidelines and recommendations from the ICAO, EASA and national authorities. Have a good one and always happy landing.

Really like these videos Mr. Buntenbach! I am a very keen aviation enthusiast, having my own ATC Radio when I go plane spotting I really like listening to the communications when I go spotting at Heathrow and Gatwick. Do you fly to Gatwick?

@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thanks. I have another question as I just thought - when you leave a certain airspace, what radio channel do you tune into? For example, London control or radar?) I've tried to pick some of these up on my radio before.

Any chance to see the captain without his sunglasses? :) Thank you for the video! The more I watch them the more the process become more familiar for me :) Please more, thank you! ;)

What is the method for determining the climbing velocity beyond the altitude of 10,000 feet?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
After the airplane is clean (no flaps and no gear extended anymore), we fly 250 knots. Sometimes ATC restricts the speed to a lower value or even want us to fly faster than 250 knots. We do this with full climb power and the resulting vertical speed varies very much with the airplane, the engines and the load. When approaching a cleared altitude or level, we reduce the vertical speed to 1500 feet a minute or less if there is nearby traffic above our cleared altitude or level to avoid a TCAS resolution advisory.

quick question, in older videos the call signs were silenced, any reason why? would you be able to get a video of 06 departure? I don't expect this to be easy considering how little use 06 has had recently 🤣
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
The callsigns were originally silenced due to privacy reasons. Luckily I was able to change that a while ago and made it easier for me during the editing and for you as the viewer. The videos show whatever runway is in use and this is driven by the wind and if the wind is calm, by ATC. I landed and departed on 6 a while ago during very ugly weather. I did not film it because of the weather. I hope to come back another time to runway 6 on a nice weather day. Then - for sure - I will try to record and publish a new video.

@@ApproachandDepartureVideos yeah I had an idea it was either that or advertising related.. like I said I don’t expect 06 to be an easy one to get footage with considering it’s normally used when the weather’s not great

Captain, do you have to assess the first officer on his performance. What does Q and H stand for? Surberb video again.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
Thanks for watching and the good feedback! No, I do not have to assess the first officer on his performance. Assessments of performance are done during the yearly line checks and 2 times a year in the simulator. After a flight, we usually speak short about how everything was. But this is just between us in the cockpit. QNH is the pressure value we dial into the altimeter to enable it to show the correct altitude above mean sea level during the approach or during the departure.

When a checklist is stopped, as the taxing one at 9:37, should not be restarted from the beginning?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
That's exactly what we did. The checklist started with "flight controls - checked". Then ATC called and after the call, the checklist was read again and started again with "flight controls" .... That means we restarted from the beginning. The decision about that is up to the crew. As long as the crew knows where they stopped the checklist, they may also continue where they stopped before. In general, we always try to read the checklists without interruption. But sometimes it is not possible.

Thanks, Marc. I remember that you already complained about the seat position in another video. The situation did not change: I can confirm for myself that the seat position is 100 % correct and in accordance to all Airbus instructions. Maybe it looks strange for the viewer due to the camera positions and the wide angle camera lenses. Have a nice day.

I really don't like how you can hear the ATC even if it's not for you.. that puts extra workload on pilots to interpret all comms. Surely in future there will be plane-specific communication? Or even better, unmistakable text based ATC commands
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Год назад
This is a very bad idea. When approaching, departing, or taxiing, we also want to know what the other airplanes around us are supposed to do. This is very important for a good situational awareness and improves flightsafety. Therefore, it is essential to listen to the radio and to hear what is going on. Enroute and at higher altitudes during climb and descent, the communication with ATC is done already electronically plane specific in lots of areas.
@yes-ni1od
@yes-ni1od Год назад
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Hard disagree, just because it's what the industry does, doesn't mean it's good. Listening and interpreting messages to "know what other airplanes around you are doing" is terrible and not human friendly, riddled with obvious flaws like human interpretation.
