I'm an English man with Scottish heritage who has lived in Germany in the past and I miss Germany it is a wonderful country with lovely people who I respect so much. Highland cathedral composed by Germans Ulrich Roever and Michael Korb in 1982 for a Highland games held in Germany brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it.
I am german and this tune was played on my husbands funeral in 2018. Scotland was and is the land of our hearts. We could not explain why, but who already knows about the ancient roots?
Quit complaining a german wrote it , you should be honoured that a german was inspired enough by our country to write such a masterpiece honestly i couldn't care who wrote it i thank them for this amazing piece of work and i dont think a scotsman could of captured a tune that defines scotland quite as well as this .
WE DO NOT COMPLAIN WHO WROTE IT WE WELCOME ANY TUNE WRITTEN FOR THE PIPES AND THEY ARE GREAT SCOTTISH TUNES WRITTEN BY SCOTLAND ECT SCOTLAND THE BRAVE A SCOTTISH SOLDIER AMD MANY OTHERS
Still back to watch this 9 years on… it just does something to the feels… especially as a proud Scot 🏴🏴🏴🏴 we are a small nation but by god we are one of the best 🏴🏴🏴
In 2015 this beautiful melody was played by the pipes and drums of the Scots School in Bathurst NSW at the funeral of my son Shayn aged 43. Very memorable!
It doesn't matter who wrote it - it's a glorious tune. If anyone else, from any country in the world, would like to write anything as comparable, please do, bring it to Scotland, and we'll play it - that's because we are an inclusive country - we celebrate humanity - "a man's a man for aw that."
I agree. It's magnificent, though I'm utterly taken aback that a Scotsman didn't write it. I have this on my MP3 player and always replay it at least a couple of times when it comes around. As for 'the pipes' I love the sound they make.
Hello folks, I am a scotsman. I know this tune was not written by a scot, but it was written as a pipe harmony, whitch I hope you will all appreciate is our national instrument. I watched a documentery the other day on how the pipes inspired britain in the trenches of the world wars. In my eyes and many others it is not only beautiful, but a very inspiring sound..If you ever want to succeed at anything, try the pipes in the backround. I promise you won't go wrong. Much love to the world, we hate being in a war that we had no say in. we are a peacefull nation.
Michael Korb has always had a special liking for bagpipe music. When he finished school in 1974 and came to Berlin, he immediately took lessons with the "pipe major" of a Scottish battalion, who taught him to play this unusual instrument. When the Scots left Berlin, Michael Korb also went .... to Edinburgh, where he took daily lessons with the 80-year-old master Paddy Atkinson. During the day, he practised in Paddy's garden arbour, at night (because of the neighbours) he practised in the woods. For several years, he kept coming back to Edinburgh, until he had an adequate command of the instrument. Following publication of a record featuring bagpipe music in disco style in 1979 and the lucky encounter with the experienced and very successful arranger, producer and composer Uli Roever (who worked, among others, for Udo Jürgens and Peter Maffay), after the production of the single records "Highland Games"/"Lonely Piper" and "Dreamy Island"/"Devils Dance" "Highland Cathedral" was jointly developed and also published as a single in 1982 together with the title "By The Right-Quick-March". The two makers of the tune were convinced of its chances of success - the publishing companies were not. In spite of their rejection at that time, the tune has found its way into people's hearts - sometimes in an unusual way.
This was the tune my mum chose for the entrance to her own funeral service. God bless Maimie, you were a mum to be proud of and a special person. God bless and thanks for my own great life with my own lovely family. Xxxx
I'm an American of Scots blood and am active in the Scottish community here in California. The words calling for Scots around the world to unite and return to the home country brought tears to my eyes.
@@ohauss Indeed, it just goes to demonstrate why we need to retain our national identities, protect our heritages and not become a homogeneous group. The nation state is an important building block of society. There is then absolutely nothing to prevent those indepndent nations co-operating on all things of mutual interest.
I am also proud to be Scottish and think this tune is brilliant, I hate being associated with Scottish Nationalism, these are horrible bitter people I fail to understand what people find attractive of this route in life? Trust me there are better ways and better people to trust! Ru!e Brittana. Scotland Forever!!!
Many excellent teachers of the Highland pipes are very open to teaching people of all nationalities, races, faiths who are serious and diligent students. I have heard some of my compositions played by Grade One bands at the World Pipe Band Competitions in Glasgow. I am from Israel and was always made to feel welcome by pipers in Scotland and Canada especially. Honestly, the fact that Germans composed this melody has never been an issue in any way. Green Hills of Tyrol was composed by Rossini, and is probably the most common retreat 3/4 for pipe bands.
I had this played at my wedding in memory of my late mother in law who sadly passed one month before we got married she was from Ayrshire love the song fell in love with it when going to this tattoo and when she passed this was my tribute to her I walked down the ails to it
My Wife walked down the aisle to this played by a local piper in Tighnabruaich parish church 15 years ago 20.02 2002. Happy Anniversary my love Angela💘💘
Even though this video was posted quite some years ago, it still amazes me. It's so wonderfun to see all these cultures mixing together with beautiful music. It really warms my heart.
Who cares if the tune was written by Germans - it gets my Scots blood racing, and the lyrics are pretty good too, so why don't we have this as our national anthem instead of the negative Flower of Scotland which was originally composed as a lament anyway!
+Aileen Lightbody why didn't they chose for independancy? remember William Wallace (for so far the story is true of course). Those people gave their lives even it's so long ago. I know why the people chose not to, but in Andaluse in Spain it's no reason to stop trying.
+Patrick Hofkens We true Scots have not giving up the fight for Independence, its such a pity that the older generation were persuaded by the scaremongering & lies of the Establishment, which they now see them for what they were.....lies
+Jim Jamieson Yes people were made scared. I completely agree. That's why you must never give up and keep on fighting. Never give up. Many greets from Flanders.
+Patrick Hofkens The main things I think went against it were ... fear; a belief that our only asset was North Sea oil and the lack of a strong, believable currency. I think the mood has already progressed beyond fear to irritation (with Westminster) and is now approaching outrage at being treated as a backwater with no clout. More and more people are now realising that the wrong decision was made last year. I also think people are now seeing NS oil in its context - wont last forever but goes a lot further amongst the 5M population of Scotland than 68M ofUK - AND it is just a fantastic bonus, not the basis of our economy. Currency needs to be settled, though, before the next referendum. A lot of YES! people were against sharing £ sterling as much as No people were made to believe it wouldnt be allowed by Westminster - which was nonsense anyway. So we need a credible, strong alternative that people will have confidence in. I know the older generation may have made the difference, but I have to praise my 94 year old father who voted Yes because he believed it was not about him at his age but about the younger generation and the generations to come. He was a belter - miss you, Dad xx
Highland cathedral was a favourite of both my parents and it was played at both their funerals! Who wrote it is completely irrelevant - it is beautiful and moving and reminded two wonderful people of times they spent in the highlands x
This piece of music sounds just as wonderful played by a single piper and drummer, as by a few hundred ditto ! It's simply magical...🏴 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 Love from Norway🙋♀️ 🇳🇴
This yank veteran always enjoys the Precision that is shown by the troops of the UK when they march. Very impressive. I ran across Highland Cathedral some time ago and it is a special song indeed. As for "God Save the Queen" That melody has been around for some time. It was also the Melody for the German National Anthem until WWI. Here in the states, we appropriated it for a song called "My Country Tis of Thee". I just saw this in a Video which was a Tribute to the men & Women of the NHS. Very touching.
For me the sweetest thing is that bass drum how intricate it is, to do that, so thank you Billy Whitla for your signature beat nobody compares to that. One of the hardest things to do musically to put your own signature on the base drum. I'd know your beat anywhere don't have to see you to know you are playing that drum
I was at the inaugural in Berlin. .. us Sappers went there every other year to build the tattoo.... absolute awesome..... The 2 Scottish infantry regiments that year were Black Watch and Kings Own Scottish Borderers
was at the Tattoo back in 2006 an said that at that time was a record 130 sets of pipes playing this !, my late mums fav an played at her funeral !, still brings a lump to my throat !. hope to go back again to see the Tattoo :)
Ppl like to moan god germans wrote it , well what a great song written for pipes n drums named after a big church in scotland they wrote , its a fine tune that could b written by an englishman for all I really care .
In my humble (English, and therefore possibly worthless) opinion, this tune is why God invented bagpipes. (I did used to wonder why before hearing it). It epitomises all that is fab about Scotland; Highlands and Glens (oh, and the humour of course)😊 I can honestly say it moves me to motionless. I just have to sit there, listen, appreciate and pay attention. Recommend Andre Riu’s version too.
+Psyko Mantitz Don't mind who wrote it - kein problem! I don't even mind the tune of Flower of Scotland - it is the defeatist words. Why do we have to always see ourselves in the context of England? How many national anthems refer to another country? It is simply pathetic. Grrrrrr!
Firstly, Britain is a Scottish Empire. Why would the land of King James VI, first monarch of Britain, leave its own empire? Secondly, yes it was written by Germans. But anyone who knows the history of Prussia knows that the Prussian military that built the German Empire was largely commanded by Scottish immigrants. End of disdain.
Its a present to all scotish people from Germany - it's yours! The people who wrote it, love(d) Scotland. Otherwise they wouldn't compose such a beautiful SCOTISH music.
Can we say Anglo-Saxon people? If you are Celtic of origin you share your heritage with the peoples of western and Central Europe. There are Celtic mummies in western China.
Maybe we needed a German to write us a song that captures our country and our love for it, not a sour dirge about a battle 700 years ago. This song makes me feel more patriotic than FoS and Scotland the Brave combined!
I am proud to say I have Irish Ancestry. One can say it's close to Scotland. But i have a Scottish Lass as a DIL. She played Highland Cathedral at both my daughters weddings 🏴🏴🇿🇦🇿🇦🥰🥰🥰
