A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush! While Broberg is good and may progressively get better, I think Kulak has been a consistent Dman for the Oilers.

Going to be interesting Tuesday. I also think we are going to see offer sheets become more common over the next few years now as well. Especially if the Blues do end up getting these players. I think if that happens, some owners are going to be telling there GM teams to pursue these options as well.

The issues with broberg are...he asked for a trade last season. He didn't sign any offers the oilers made before the offer sheet. He signed the offer sheet to get away from the oilers. The cost is high. The kulak trade makes the most sense because it also opens up the spot for broberg to play on the correct side, but if you are having to dump ceci and kulak then you are down a starting d man. The price is too high for the pilers right now. St Louis can paybit becasue they have the space. Not only does this cost double what it should for broberg for the next two years but you also have many major re signings to deal with through the course of this contract and every one of them when asked to take a team friendly will just point at brobergs over pay and say, you must respect him a lot more then me or you wouldn't be asking me to take less. This is the biggest problem. Oilers can't afford negative working relationship with the other players...and what if broberg really stinks this year, it will make this situation even worse.
@rayflojenkins8689
@rayflojenkins8689 2 месяца назад
But he really has no power, the Oilers match and he's an Oiler for next season. The Oilers can't trade him regardless of what he wants. If the Oilers match, Broberg best option is to come to camp, have the best season he possibly can and at the end of next season, if he still wants out, then request a trade then. I know there also risk for the Oilers that if he unhappy, he doesn't play well and they have a hard time to trade him at that cap hit next season, but having a bad season also would hurt Broberg too. There should be a mechanism in the CBA, that if a matched player refuses to report or demands a trade after a team matches that they can trade them.
@vincemedak9734

@@rayflojenkins8689 you missed the point of my comment. My point was....they are going to pay a guy who doesn't even want to be there by twice what he should be getting, who hasn't even played a full season in the NHl yet, during the same time period where it is a "cup or bust window"(no extra money to spend on future might works outs), and they are signing some of the most important contracts for the future of the team over the next two years.

@brianlb78

The problem with signing them now then figuring it out is that teams will really stick it to them knowing that they absolutely have to do something or they will be over cap and I'm not sure what the penalty is for being over the cap but can't be good. And the idea that the Oilers are just all of the sudden going to win cups is amazing that people keep saying this.

To have a truly successful franchise it is vital to have managers who can see beyond the end of their own noses and this always requires a certain level of patience with certain key players and especially with high end prospects. Besides, the Oilers have an aging team and cannot afford to sacrifice players such as Broberg and Holloway who represent the future. Otherwise, we should fully expect more "ages of darkness" in the future.

I agree with Lawton! The Oilers have to keep Phillip Broberg whether Broberg wants to stay or not . Holland, & Jackson have already mismanage these two young players badly in the last 2-3 years so two wrongs don't make a right. I hope they find a way to also keep Holloway. Trading Brett Kulak to the Canucks would be a huge mistake. Kulak is a VG DMan . Why would the Oilers want to make the Canucks a better team? Keep Kulak ,trade Ceci only if they have to. Kane goes on LTIR so he can get a surgery, heal properly and be ready for 2025 playoffs.

There’s no way we’ll be able to sign Draisaitl and Bouchard next season, I believe one must go, so that may become an option in the dilemma we’re in at the moment. Sad that we may lose both our young defensive prospects in probably less than a year away. Bouchard could fetch a first round pick now rather then have him walk as an RFA next summer and you could bring back Barrie on the PP. that would leave some cash to work with but not enough to sign both Broberg and Holloway. Could trade Bouchard for a pick and have a team take on the extra cash we need to sign both Broberg and Holloway. If we trade Bouchard then at least we get to keep 2 out of the 3 rather than lose all 3. Trading Bouchard probably would solve the problem now and we get better value for all 3 players then lose Holloway and Broberg for peanuts. I say we match the offer and take time to figure it out, there is many options available.

They could have had him under contract at 1,7-2,0 million for three year or something like that. What a fumble. Now they have to let him go and watch him prosper. Great work. Again, what does Broberg himself say? Is his agent doing all the talking? Is the relationship between him and team really that poisonous? How do we know it's poisonous? Who says? It's all a new deal now. New management group. New way of doing things. New level of communication. And then there is the Paul Coffey factor. So far, Jeff Jackson has, with the exception of the Bowman hiring, waved the magic wand. Let's hope he can keep doing so. Can't see Vancouver doing a trade with us. Sure, they get Kulak, but doing that trade helps us more than it does them because we get to keep two very good young NHL level players both of whom have a lot more long-term potential than Kulak. Do I think Broberg is better than Kulak right now? Yes. If I was Vancouver, I wouldn't do anything to help the Oilers. You never know though. Stranger things have happened. Already miss Ken Holland!
