Educating the "At Risk" Training consist of:

Teachers today are challenged daily by the task of "Educating At Risk Youth" who appear to be extremely apathetic at times. This training is designed to help educators become more effective with educating at risk youth immediately, reduce and eliminate stress in their classrooms, and empower them with strategies to enhance their overall teaching experience.

-A simple, but powerful strategy to get even the worst student to cooperate, consistently help their teachers, and become the models to follow.
-How to use a student's negative past to create a positive future and why they'll love you for years to come for recognizing and using this powerful strategy to help them.

You have my heat on this topic. When I get my inheritance I hope to start programs to halt the wars in urban neighborhoods and then bring in teams to engage and model healthy choices and relationships. Such a BIG deal.....

Chris I think the notion of engaging students directly, inviting them in a dialogue dealing with life from their perspective, really "walking" with them in that capacity as opposed to trying to be the "authoritarian" is essential to laying the groundwork for an authentic educational experience. The problem with teachers and schools in general is this rush to teach the curriculum, the lessons while neglecting to teach the student. The system has become more important than human beings. Now this dynamic works in a society that needs people to be obedient in response to "authoritarianism". Its easy to deliver the curriculum the lesson but its harder for teachers to slow down and engage students with real questions and allow students to respond with their inquiry, criticism and viewpoint. The text becomes a medium for social control because it is the medium of "the authority" an entity no one is to question. With this sort of play going on in the schools daily, students are being trained not to think. Its just a thought.

This is a great perspective and I really appreciate your insight! I totally agree with you regarding the system changing! I think it's even caused very effective and gifted teachers, to put what's demanded to them in front of what's best for the students in their classrooms. I'm not sure what capacity you work in, but please keep up the great work!

Chris I loved this video this has really opened my eyes to some methods for reaching out to "At risk Youth" . As well as giving me some things to put in my research paper on "guiding troubled youth". (giving credit where it is deserved of course) Thanks

I think that when someone successfully educate and change an at risk person's life, then that at risk person does more changes to the world than anyone else....

Hello Mr. Cannon, Would you be willing to visit my schools to speak to troubled teens in my school. The troubled teens I am referring to are the ones who ignore all rules and they are the ones who constantly disrupt classroom learning.

Man, you just perfectly described my first year teaching. Going into my second year right now a totally different game plan. I'm a high school special education teacher of a PBS program, so ALL of my students (10) are at-risk.

Chris, thank you for this informative and inspiring clip. Sometimes we know that we are failing to engage, other times we might tell ourselves that we are failing, yet we are only failing to realize the difference we are making. To know for certain however, that we are truly engaging and empowering the at-risk students, well that's the real gold. To create a paradigm-shift in a child's perspective is never going to be easy - it can require myriad positive influences. I look forward to hearing more from your channel. I would be interested to learn more about your PD workshop (though I am writing from Tasmania)

IMO, the best way to deal with youths is the round table method. Bring them to a table where you all stand as equals, them, the one they had a problem with, if possible, and one of their peers to act as an objective supporter. Then facilitate conversation between them, analyse what's going on, and - instead of offering a solution - let them come up with a solution on their own basis.

What abput the responsibility of the STUDENT? Many of our inner city youth have a poor value system. I hate to say this, but certain behaviors from students should never be tolerated in a classroom. Students that disrupt the educational environment should be removed from the classroom. And if they are suspended 3 times in a school year, they should be required to go to a "special military style school " where they learn basic discipline, respect for authority and a vocational skill. Teachers should not have to become psychologists. Many of the problems in inner city schools are behavior problems, including a lack of respect for teachers and the learning environment. When students begin to see that they do not run the educational environment, and there are measures that will be taken to get rid of unacceptable behavior, most will fall in line and get about the business of being educated. Until then, all this other stuff is just a bandaid approach. We have to create a school culture where students respect ALL teachers, not just individual teachers who have discovered this effective strategy or that effective strategy. New teachers coming in the field should be able to teach in a school climate that allows them to be mist effective.
