In this video Kirby Allison reviews Edward Green's Galway Field Boots in Cordovan leather and Dainite out-soles.
Edward Green is known for making some of the finest leather dress shoes in the world. Edward Green was a man with a singular passion for shoes. Starting in the industry as a twelve-year-old apprentice, Edward was driven by an ambition to make a better class of shoe. He established his own workshop in Northampton in 1890, gathering around him the town’s most illustrious craftsmen, each an expert in their respective field, and sourced the best materials for them to work with.
“Excellence without compromise,” was his promise and soon his name became associated with the finest English Goodyear Welted footwear, gracing style icons from Ernest Hemingway to Edward, the Duke of Windsor.
Edward Green prides themselves on using the highest quality leathers from the uppers to the soles. The uppers are sewn with the highest-grade French and Italian calfskins on the market. Ensuring that the shoes will not only be incredibly handsome from the start, but also age and patina equally well. The uppers are hand-clicked, or cut out by hand, allowing the clickers to avoid any natural blemishes and use only the best areas of the hide.

Honestly, having grown up in the English countryside and lived as an adult in it for over thirty years no Gentleman farmer or nobility would wear boots like this from my personal experience of both types. I used to know the old Lord Courtney in Devon and he wore an ancient pair of country brogues decades old and resoled many times and if he was not wearing those he wore a cheap ( not Hunter) pair of black wellingtons purchased at the local farmers store, Mole Valley Farmers. Other landowners generally wore Dealer boots or Wellingtons. Boots like this for the last sixty years at least are worn by townies popping down to the country for the weekend. Country folk are pretty tight with their money even if, like Lord Courtney, they owned a huge part of the county and lived in a tenth century castle as they have responsibilities to keep the land and its tenant farmers going for future generations. Lovely boots but the last time a Gentleman farmer would have worn such a pair would have been Edwardian times.

I think this boot is definitely intended for townies popping up to the country for the weekend. Not a bad thing, in my opinion, as a townie who loves the countryside LOL.

Thank you for showing the shoes while they are being worn. It helps a lot to understand the design.

Beautiful boots. Even though they are quite expensive for a production, true field boot, IMHO they would look really great if they were worn as intended - in the field, mud, tall grass, etc. The patina that would develop from the repeated wear and cleaning of those two tough leathers, would be amazing.

What a beautiful pair of boots. I love the mixture of leather and suede on a boot. The slight break in your pants really brought them out.

I imagine these being more suited to a Texas businessman than an Englishman. Especially with those materials. If a countryside loving Englishman were to own a pair of Galway, he would opt for the rosewood on the 64 last.

the Galway cordovan can be made in 202 or 64 too. That's what I would do.

I’m not a big fan of a suede leather mix but love love the boot. Probably the Galway in Gold with a Kirby patina applied. Thanks for the review.

Kirby had me at "cordovan and suede". I really enjoy these boots! I own a pair of Carlos Santos' copycat and they are beautiful! I work in an office environment so I shined the hell out of my toecap and wear them to work, no shame :) I can tell by the video how Edward Green's version is a much higher tier pair of boots than Carlos Santos, but for $300 I absolutely can't be mad at Carlos Santos.

I have a question about the Video. Could you please explain the difference between "360º Bench Welted" from Allen Edmonds and "Goodyear welted"? Thank you for your beautifully made and very informative Videos.
4 года назад
AE's 360 degree welting is a Goodyear welt that continues all the way around the sole, even the heel. They are not alone in doing this, but it is also common, perhaps more common, to only do 3/4 Goodyear welting, which would not go around the heel.

One small advice: The Derby shoe is pronounced /ˈdɑːrbi/, just like our english city in the East Midlands.

Interesting. Can you tell me why a football match between rival cities is also called a derby if Derby is a city?
@stripymccatpuss
@stripymccatpuss 4 года назад
@@monkeypawism It is widely reported that the phrase originates from the town of Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England. There, since as early as the 12th century, two teams from opposite ends of the town play a rough and tumble football/rugby type of game called the Royal Shrovetide Football Match. The match is between the 'uppers' and the 'downers' - townspeople from opposite sides of the river that runs through the town. The object of the game is to get a painted leather ball into the opposition's goal by fair means or foul. You might get a flavour of the scene from the fact that the goals are three miles apart and that one of the (few) rules is that 'unnecessary' violence is frowned upon. This type of game used to be common on feast days throughout England, and this example is still played out annually at Ashbourne. In normal circumstances evidence linking an event with a phrase having a 900 hundred-year pedigree would be persuasive. Unfortunately, there's nothing apart from local folklore, which is always present when locals lay claim to a phrase, to link the phrase to the town or to the Shrovetide match. After all, the phrase isn't 'a local Ashbourne'. The actual source is more prosaic. The Derby is the name of the premier horse race in England and the contest was founded by the twelfth Earl of Derby in 1780. Since at least as early as 1840 'derby' has been used as a noun in English to denote any kind of sporting contest. A local derby is just a sporting contest between local rivals. Early uses of the phrase referred to football (soccer) matches and the first printed citation appears to be the Daily Express, October 1914: "A local Derby between Liverpool and Everton".

An English gentleman would never wear a shoe made out of cordovan and suede. - more likely to wear rosewood calf. Also never use these boots for hiking....ever. Lovely Texas ranger styled boots though.

No way in Hell would a country gentleman would wear these $1,500 boots (with shell cordovan) to roam in the muck of a wet countryside, just like no one is going to take a $150,000 Range Rover to tool around a sandy dune or to muck around any English countryside.
