That RISC-V development kit is pretty neat, the MCU is from a company called Kendryte. To my knowledge, it's the first low cost chip using RISC-V, which is an open instruction set architecture (ISA). It's kind of a big deal, since most processors/MCUs use ARM or x86 which are not open specifications and require royalties, NDAs, etc. Bear in mind however that specific implementations of the ISA are not required to be open, so don't expect to be able to download the Verilog/VHDL code used to design this chip from Kendryte. There are some open source implementations that you can try out on FPGAs like the Rocket core. Also recently Western Digital announced that they will be open sourcing their implementation called Swerv, which they plan to use as controllers for their SSDs.

Most pins on the RPi are multiplexed with other functions. In this example, pin 12 / GPIO 18 is tied to the clock for the PCM audio module. I'd have to imagine that Scratch only takes hardware control of the GPIO after you hit "run", and outside of that the IO is nonsense. Edit: See the BCM2835 peripherals datasheet linked here: www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/bcm2835/BCM2835-ARM-Peripherals.pdf

It seems pretty nice, nothing really amazing in itself but it's neat to be able to interact easily without a lot of setup with many physical input and output devices. Call me crazy though, but for that price tag I feel like having a built in battery so you could run it away from a power source would've been neat. There should be enough room below the board, cost and complexity isn't too bad since there's many off the shelf boards that'd do it. That said I do wonder if including a battery might make it more complicated with getting approval for sale in some countries and it'd definitely complicate shipping (unless it gets the required certifications).

Little unfortunate that they don't provide a pin header or something. So if you'd want to add a component of your own you'd have to take the flatband cable off, jump all the contacts but the ones you want to rewire, not that good of a solution really. Try using the back of the blade tip to cut across the tape on the top of the boxes

Play with junk is a great channel. He sounds like "the Swede" from Hell on Wheels.

It looks like they sent Dave the "advanced kit" option, which is 100 dollars additional. 339 total, according to their website, to get everything Dave received.

Dave. The buzzer is feeding a signal back like a microphone.

Maybe you should put a memory card in the card slot next to the camera on the MaixPy thing??

That CowPi would be a cool thing to take as hand luggage on a plane :) #GoodLuck

That image and sound tracking stuff is super cool. I would love to have that kit to debunk ghost hunters and EVP sounds super keen. 8)

CrowPi probably not the sort of thing you would want to try to bring through airport security...

GPIO 18 was flashing as its hooked up to the piezo buzzer, and your voice was creating a voltage.

Pin 18 on the CrowPi very definitely appears to be flashing along with your voice at 17:27. Intensity of the light seems to scale with the loudness of your voice. It must be connected to the microphone on the board and some other process is running to make it flash.
